Day 18
The Dead Sea

We finally made it to our final destination of the trip. After the hike down to the water we headed in. It was extremely muddy and Miki lost a thong in knee deep mud! I wore my Teva’s in and got stuck so I took them off and threw them to shore. I floated on my back and belly, but I can’t say it was comfortable. The rocks in the water had crystallised salt on them so they were sharp and cut you. Even still, what a once-in-a-lifetime experience!Read more

Such a great experience. Just don’t get the water in your eye, it stings a lot.

Petra

Seeing the Treasury at Petra has been a bucket-list experience for me. It was very cold when we started our walk but as the sun rose the rocks got warmer. The path was very quiet so we were able to spend time in the entry taking photos with very little people around. As the path opened up to the Treasury, it was breathtaking! The Treasury building is carved out of the side of the mountain, not built!

When it was first “discovered”, people thought there was treasure in the statues and started shooting the rocks at the top to crack them open. You can still see the bullet holes! Unfortunately you can no longer enter the Treasury.

We then walked up to a Byzantine church and various temples. Lunch was at the end of the walk.

On the trek back we got to the Treasury and then caught a golf cart back to the entrance. What an exhausting but incredible day!Read more

Day 15
Farewell Dinner

This evening we walked to the Notre Dame hotel/restaurant for our farewell dinner. We ate a 3-course meal at the roof top cheese bar. It was wonderful to sit, chat and share our favourite memories from the trip. Miki and I are both pictures here with Pat and Sr Bernice Loch.

After dinner we walked back through the New Gate Christmas Market. We stopped at George’s Ceramic Shop and bought some tiles as gifts. Rami (our guide) actually used to work in the shop and stopped to help us out. He knows everyone in Jerusalem!Read more

Jerusalem Museum & Shrine of the Book

In this smaller museum we looked over a 1:50 scale model of Jerusalem during the Second-Temple Period. This was incredible to see the sheer size of the Temple compared to the rest of the buildings. The scale model allows you to see how all the different parts of the Old City were connected and how the people navigated around.

Following this we visited the Book of the Shrine exhibit. Here we saw replicas of some of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The most intact one they found is from approximately 7m long and dated at around 100BCE.Read more

Emmaus

This morning we celebrated Mass at Emmaus. 7 miles from Jerusalem, here Jesus revealed himself to two of his disciples when they broke bread. This was after his crucifixion and resurrection.

Yad Vashem - Holocaust Museum

A small group of us journeyed on the tram to Yad Vashem. These incredible grounds host not just the museum but gardens, mini exhibitions and shops. The museum was moving, heartbreaking and at times confronting. A must see place that reminds us to never forget, and to never let history repeat.Read more

Day 14
Stations of the Cross

We started this morning at 5:30am. It was incredible so the Stations around the Old City and end at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This Church is on the hill of Calvary, where Jesus was crucified. We climbed to the top and got to touch the bedrock and were even more lucky to celebrate a (quick) Mass in the actual Tomb of Jesus.

During peak tourist time, there can be 4 hour lines to even just walk through this Tomb, so we were very lucky!

Getting to finish the Stations here was incredibly moving. To follow, quite literally, Jesus’ footsteps was emotionally for many.Read more

Be’er Sheba

This ancient Tel had a lookout over the modern parts of Be’er Sheba. We climbed down the water channel, similar to the one at Megiddo. We ask saw Abraham’s Well and the Battle of Be’er Sheba ANZAC monument.Read more

Saint Saviours Church
