  • Casa de Pilatos

    6 Agustus 2023, Spanyol

We went to this gorgeous house that actually belonged to Pontious Pilot. It exchanged hands and was paced through generations. There were multiple gardens and a main courtyard with a fountain.

  • Historic Granada

    7 Agustus 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 95 °F

In Granada, we started with a walking tour where we learned some amazing Spanish history. Granada was a very Muslim city and was the last to fall to the Christians in 1492. Shortly following this, all Muslims and Jews were forced out of the city limits past the wall that stood as its border. However, there is a long and complicated history of Muslim and Christian influences that formed Granada.

Much of the Arabic style buildings are still intact, unlike other places. Since this was the last city to fall, much of the newer Christian dwellers didn't feel the need to prove their good Christian faith quite as much and thus left the architecture remaining. The Muslims predominantly found in Granada were mostly Northern Africans, specifically Moroccans, creating a blend of Andalusian and Moroccan culture and food.

At some point, there was a rebellion and civil war within Granada. The Muslims wanted their city back from the Christians, especially since some were still in the city as "converts." This has caused a large number of Muslims and Arab communities to seek out Granada as their new home. Today, the city is an interesting blend of Christianity and Muslim, with mosques built not 200 ft away from churches.

The pictures depict parts of the history I just told. The first and last pictures show parts of the wall that create a border of the city limit. Now, the city extends past these walls. The second picture is of a mosque that was converted into a church. Up at the very top, somewhat hard to see, stands a cross atop 3 balls. The balls are an important aspect of the Islamic faith, demonstrating the Christian domination over the Muslims. Picture 3 is a bit of a strange one. These 3 houses were all noblemen and officials' houses but were built during an economic downturn for Granada. Thus, all three of these buildings' facades are not actual pillars, columns, statues, or even bricks, they're simply painted on. Picture number 4 is a part of what used to be a gate to the city. It served as a vantage point and is sat directly next to a "river" (more like a stream) to create a partial dam and form a reservoir.

  • The Streets of Granada

    7 Agustus 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 95 °F

Much of Granada's streets are un-drivable. They are made of cobblestone and are not paved. Most include steps or terraces, or are so narrow a car physically cannot fit. This adds to the charm of the city, much to the displeasure of my legs and lungs. Granada is built into a hill, meaning all of the paths are uphill on uneven, sloping ground that is strangely slippery. Since these streets are made for walking, the stones are very, very polished, leaving for surprisingly slippery paths. I wiped out on some stairs (luckily was unharmed) and many places we slid.Baca selengkapnya

  • Cave Houses

    7 Agustus 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

Atop the hill that Granada resides upon, there lies a division, civilized vs untouched. Below this line is the city, running water, electricity, and sewage, above, is where the undesirables fled to during the Muslim Christian civil war. It still remains a place known to house people living on the street and those in poverty, along with some hippies. However, closer towards the top of the hill, spilling into the city, are cave houses. Starting as very stigmatized, these have now become popular rooms to keep. While most people in Granada won't buy a Cave House, many still live in them.Baca selengkapnya

  • Carmen de los Mártires

    8 Agustus 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 90 °F

While wandering around Granada, we stumbled upon this gorgeous Carmen. A carmen is simply the name of a house with a large courtyard garden, typically including an orchard and vine plants like grapes. This was a public garden with free entry, and it was breathtaking. It also had excellent views of the city.Baca selengkapnya

  • Cloistered Nun Cookies

    8 Agustus 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 99 °F

We went to a monastery known for baking delicious cookies. The thing about this is that the bakers are cloistered nuns. Due to their religion, these women are prohibited from seeing outside people, so the way they provide service is through a turntable. You ring a bell, a nun asks what you want, you pay, the turntable turns, and you receive your change along with your goodies. It was a great experience.Baca selengkapnya

  • San Miguel Alto Viewpoint

    8 Agustus 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

Atop the highest place of the city, sits a small church, San Miguel, from which you can see the entire city. These are the views we got from the top. On our way back down, Google Maps decided to have us trek down the side of the mountain on paths no bigger than a deer path, as opposed to taking the paved road down. It was sort of fun, hiking down the mountain. We certainly saw different scenery than we would have going down the road.Baca selengkapnya
