We left New Mexico and headed into Colorado. We used the interstates and arrived at Manitou Springs early afternoon. We had 2 choices; ride up Pikes Peak or laze by the pool. It didn't take much discussion, we put on our swimmers. In the evening we had a nice Chinese.Read more

We headed up Pikes Peak this morning. A beautiful ride, still some snow at the top. Views were amazing. After, Neil had arranged a route going over some mountain passes. Unfortunately they were closed so we had to take a long way round. Still very pretty though. We finished the day in Silverthorne, Colorado. An hour later 3 British bikes turned up. We met up and went to a restaurant with them in the evening. They were spending 3 weeks here zooming across the country.Read more

A beautiful ride today across the mountains, through Gunnison Forest. Weather is perfect, clear blue skies and 25 degrees. We walked into the town of Hotchkiss in the afternoon heading to a coffee shop the other side of town. Once again we were let down. It was closed! We are getting desperate for a decent cuppa in a proper cup and not a polystyrene or paper one.Read more

Gunnison Gorge and Ouray, Colorado

We left our motel about 9am and headed to the post office to send some stuff back home. We had bought far too much with us and needed to lighten the load. Met a few locals in the p.o. and they were so nice and helpful. After we started heading towards Gunnison Gorge. The road we took went along side the gorge giving spectacular views. We stopped at the visitor centre and looked at the vertical steep cliff sides. From there we carried on another 50ish miles to a small mountain town called Ouray. Surrounded by mountains it is a beautiful place. The town has some lovely shops and some natural hot spa pools. We spent an hour in the afternoon at the pools then chilled out for the rest of the day.Read more

Another beautiful morning. We had to walk nearly the length of the town this morning for our breakfast. I decided to try the biscuits and sausage gravy which I've seen advertised nearly everywhere. The biscuits are scones, and the gravy is a thick white sauce. It filled a gap. We then headed west to Moab in Utah. The scenery was amazing but so difficult to take pictures while the bike is moving. The winds picked up again about 50 miles from Moab. We booked into our hotel and went for a stroll. We saw some off-roading jeeps and thought it'd be much more fun than on the motorbike. We've booked one for tomorrow.Read more

Today we decided to trade in 2 wheels for 4. We hired a buggy and went down a route through Canyonlands National Park. It was such fun. Neil quickly got the hang of it, said it reminded him of being in the army. We had an absolute blast but was completely covered in dirt.Read more

We left Moab at 8am today to head west into Utah. We picked up route 12, an amazing road going through all different scenery from mountain roads to dessert. We spent the night at a town called Tropic, Utah. We had dinner in the on-site cowboy themed restaurant, best burgers we've had so far.Read more

Bryce Canyon and Zion Nat. Park, Utah

This morning we headed for Bryce Canyon. We rode the full length of the park. The views were amazing, especially the Bryce Amphitheatre. From there we headed out to Zion National Park. The first part of this park was so unusually beautiful but it was so busy we weren't able to stop for photos. We stopped at a very busy information centre then continued our journey on to a small town called Colorado City. We'd booked into a nice B&B but without realizing that it had a shared bathroom. Last night we stayed at the B&B. Neither of us liked it and couldn't wait to get going. We headed east along the top of the Grand Canyon. We could have ridden the 40 miles to the North Rim but decided to leave it til we get to the South. On our way to Page we stopped at Marble Canyon and walked along the footbridge. We then continued towards Page, stopping off at Horseshoe Bend. It was very crowded with tourists but the views were amazing. We reached our motel at 3pm, not realising that it is only 2pm in Arizona. The receptionist was awful and the pool was closed. She made us wait til 3pm. But we didn't allow it to ruin our day.Read more

We left our motel in Page and travelled through the desert to Monument Valley, stopping at the visitor centre. We then rode about 20 miles to our hotel in Kayenta, a small town miles away from anywhere. A beautiful, sunny day again.Read more

We needed to change our plans because the poor bike is in need of a fresh new rear tyre. We decided to head straight to Flagstaff to a bike repair shop to get one sorted. We left nice and early and arrived in Flagstaff about 10am. After ordering the tyre we headed to our hotel and luckily were able to check in early. We spent the rest of the day lounging around the pool.Read more

We arrived at the Grand Canyon at 8.30am, before all the crowds. We took the free bus to Hermits rest and walked some of the rim path back to the visitors centre. Spectacular views.

We drove along the old route 66 from Kingman and reached the small old mining town of Oatman. We stopped about an hour here looking at all the cowboy buildings. We then headed back to Kingman and stopped in our motel. On our way to Oatman the winds picked up again and small dust whirl winds were in the roads, nearly knocking the bike over.Read more

We left Kingman, heading north towards Las Vegas. We stopped at Hoover Dam. The tours were closed but we were able to go on the visitor centre and walk along the top of the dam. Temperature was getting hotter as the day went on. We spent about two hours here. We then headed off past Las Vegas. We were considering riding up the strip but the traffic was too heavy and the temperature too hot. We carried on, reaching Pahrump late afternoon.Read more

A brilliant day in Death Valley. When we left Pahrump at 8am we took the scenic road to Death Valley. We had the road to ourselves and only passed 1 car in over an hour. The visitor centre at Furnace Creek was 108f or 42c. Fortunately the centre had air con and water. We headed out of the valley mid afternoon towards Olanche. The winds picked up and damped the rest of the day's ride.Read more

We stayed last night in a teepee on a campsite in Olanche. Bad facilities and bad sleep. We woke up to howling winds and thought we'd be stuck in the campsite. We set off at 8am and 20 miles down the road the winds eased off. We crossed part of the sequoia forest and headed to a nice country town called Exeter. Walked around this town in the evening and had Chinese for dinner.Read more

We arrived in Sequoia late morning. Unfortunately there was low thick cloud at the top of the mountain. The ride through the park was beautiful but the higher we got the thicker the fog. Also being a holiday weekend there was so much traffic that the car parks were closed, meaning we couldn't see the famous big trees. After leaving the park we headed to Fresno for a 2 night stop.Read more

We set off early to drive the 90 miles from Fresno to Yosemite. It was very busy and we just managed to get to the Glacier view point before they closed the park. Traffic was very heavy but the views were worth waiting for.Read more

A lovely ride in from King City to our 2 night stop in Monterey on the coast. We crossed the mountains riding through a small forested road and then picking up the highway 1 and heading north. We arrived in Monterey early afternoon and headed into town. They have a farmers market on every Tuesday, good to amble through the town and even better to walk on the beach. We've now crossed North America from East to West.Read more

A day off from riding on the bike today. I walked to the aquarium which was about 2 miles along a coastal path. In the evening we had a nice meal at a fish restaurant on fisherman's wharf.

We decided not to take the scenic coastal route because strong gale force winds were predicted. Instead we rode north inland, still was windy. We arrived in San Francisco earlier and easier than expected. We dumped our stuff in the hotel room and headed off to see curly Lombard Street, Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. We then ventured into the Italian district and had pizza.Read more

We walked to pier 33 which took just over half hour. We boarded the boat which took about 20 mins to cross the water to the island. Really good tour being able to walk around the cell block. After visiting the island we strolled through Fisherman's Wharf and headed back to our hotel via an Austrian restaurant.Read more

Today we left the hotel early and walked to Fisherman's Wharf where we queued up for a ride on a tram. The tram journey took about 20 minutes and was such fun going up and down the hills. We got off near Union Square where we did a bit of shopping then made our way to Chinatown. We walked a few of the streets and tried some food. We then visited the tram museum, before heading back to our hotel via Union Street that was having a music festival for the day.Read more
