  • 6 miles to Delaware Water Gap

    May 22, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Hiked 135 miles so far. Going to try to hike another 58 to Unionville, NY by Sunday to meet Nicholas for a date at the Warwick Drive-in theatre 🥰 then heading up to Stratton, Maine to finish the 145 miles I missed in 2021 due to injury. I've met some great peeps this time around, naturally. And gotten amazing trail magix, including meals, a shower and tenting in a yard w a hot tub, fruit, hitches, freeze dried sausage nuggets, the list goes on. Can never predict what the Trail will provide, but I always have faith that it will 🙏. I even came across a woman I went to high school with! Crazy small world!! It brings the soul comfort to know that familiar faces are behind, and in front of you, even if by several miles. The time in nature has been good for me. Pennsylvania section is a bit of a morale-suck because of the rocky terrain and not getting much repreve for your feet, and I've been missing out on some good elevation climbs, but I think I've strengthened my legs enough to head up north. I'll start with the 20-mile Bigelow Range, then head down to Rangely, ME and hike south to the Whites, NH, ending with the Presidentials. Mt. Webster/Crawford Notch will be my final destination and hopefully a visit to the Notch Hostel to visit a tramily member who's working there this year!Read more

  • Back on trail, hiking, no Patty :[

    May 7–8, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Decided it was a good time for us to get Patty back home, and me on trail. We took a few days to get things in order at home, and Patty is well taken care of by Uncle Charlie ❤️ 😊 i missed her before we even left! I will be hiking with Explanation and might start updates on facebook since its more widely used. My goal is to get my trail legs and finish the 25 miles in New Hampshire and 120 miles in Maine that I did not cover on my thru-hike in 2021 due to injury. Then, back to assisting Explanation on trail, God willing! 🙏 Thanks to Alex L. and Dad for transport to trail! And of course lunch at Cracker Barrel first 😋Read more

  • Days 9/10 nero/zero BSprings to Carisle

    Apr 29–May 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

On Monday the 29th, Explanation's Achilles tendon had become swollen and painful to walk on. It is best to nurse these things sooner rather than have to get off trail due to a worse injury. So, after he walked 6 miles through Boilings Springs and reached his 💯 th mile since starting in Harper's Ferry, we stayed at the Super 8 in Carisle for 2 nights, icing and stretching appropriately. Today, he sets off again from mile 1126.7 with intentions of shortening his stride and doing 12 miles to Darlington Shelter. He will keep me posted as I continue to Doordash and wait for shuttles, in case he needs more rest. I doordashed yesterday because all the shuttle requests I've been getting have been about 40 miles south of us and are too costly for hikers or myself. Hopefully, now that Explanation has fallen behind a bit, I'll be more in the way of a small bubble of hikers who need rides!🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️🙏🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️Read more

  • Day 8 - Pine Grove to Boiling Springs

    Apr 28–29, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Explanation left the Ironmasters hostel to get back on trail the next morning. 🌄 Not wanting to sit around waiting for a shuttle, i spent 2 hours Doordashing around Carisle (36$), then got a request from a return customer to get picked up in Boiling Springs and dropped back at Ironmasters in Pine Grove (35$). After several unsuccessful calls to hostels regarding work-4-stay or even a space available, I took Patty back to Boiling Springs to get some sunshine by the creek and watch the fly fishermen and families enjoying their Sunday 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 ❤️ 🌞 I'm considering going home, as Patts is not having an easy time being in the car so much, and shuttling outside the hiker bubble has been less lucrative than anticipated. It's 75° and clear for the evening, so we are sleeping in the car at a trailhead tonight, this time, with the sunroof open. 🌠😴☪️Read more

  • Days 6/7 Work4Stay @ Pine Grove Furnace

    Apr 26–28, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

After getting my little baby hiker angels back on trail near Camp Penn on Thursday, I delivered a Smart water to a repeat customer for $5 since it was on my way northbound.
Drove into town to find some short-term work and was blessed with a BBQ chicken mac n cheese by 65 South BBQ 👌 🙌 🤤 highly recommend the 10 minute drive from 81 South if you're going through Stoufferstown. Met up with Explanation at Caladonia State Park for a quick smooch and storytime <3. Then Patts and I headed northward to Pine Grove State Park and took pictures of the old Ironworkers furnace. Missy, the caretaker at IronMasters Mansion, was kind enough to let me work-for-stay, even though they haven't hit the busy season yet! This mansion was built in 1815, and is suspected to have been a part of the underground railroad in the late 1840s! (see hatchdoor photos). Patsy has gotten plenty of attentions from the thru-hikers here, and we've been able to sleep in the bunk bed together 😴 🐶 ❤️ It's been a pleasure getting to know some of the thru-hikers that have come and gone the last 2 days, and even a fellow shuttler, Junker, who has worked for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy his whole life! It was a pleasant surprise to see Explanation come into town a whole day early cuz he busted out 17.5 miles like a freakin beast! 💪 It does get lonesome and boring waiting for shuttles out in the woods, so hopefully business picks up or I can find more work-for-stay up the trail 🙏Read more

  • Our 1st "zero" off trail...shower time!

    Apr 25–26, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Got to sleep in the car in a spot that was immediately after the Mason Dixon line right on the trail in PenMar the other night, so I could congratulate Explanation on finishing his first state! Yay Maryland (40 miles)! Got a motel in Waynesboro, did laundry, showered, and ate burgers! Oh and the best part was seeing a bunch of familiar thru-hikers in town, which led us to the Michaeux Brewery, where my old college friend Conrad happened to be managing! It was his last weekend there! We got to catch up but I forgot to get a photo :[ Gotta love these serendipitous God/trail moments ❤️Read more

  • Day 3 - Smithsburg to Pen Mar

    Apr 23–24, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

Was a beautiful day at almost 70° 🌞 hardly any ☁️ coverage. Met up with Explanation for lunch at the Ensign Cowall parking lot where I was kicked out for tenting the other day 😅 Saw local, Don, for the 3rd time who i truly enjoyed talking to. He later saw Explanation again and gave him a wood-carved AT tag for his pack. While there, we got to meet a family of 5 called Lovely and the Tramps, a mother and father hiking the whole trail whilst homeschooling their 3 boys ages 4, 7, and 9. You can follow them at www.appalachiantramps.com! Got another $20 shuttle today from Explanation's trail buddy, Mike, who was very generous and gave me a slice of pizza in Pen Mar and a chicken wing to boot! Patty really liked him and i sensed she was more at ease because she finally ate her breakfast around 6pm outside the Pizzeria 🙏 Sleeping in the car at a trailhead tonight near the Pen Mar Mason-Dixon line. 🌚 Full Moon tonight!
11:30pm Update: got out of the car to go pee, locking the keys, Patty, and my phone in the car behind me. I reluctantly knocked on the door of A house right next to the trail and these 2 ladies were kind enough to help me call Onstar 🙏 thank you <3 and thank God I didn't have to pry or damage anything with a crowbar 😅 looking forward to a zero day on Thursday April 25th. I haven't even hiked but the stink is getting real 😐

  • Day 2 - Boonsboro to Smithsburg

    Apr 22–23, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 54 °F

Got my first shuttle today (15 miles, $20) and Explanation happened to get a photo with him! Trail name: Dad/El Conquista-dor 😛. Got to have to lunch with Explanation at Turners Gap near the Washington Monument after he finished the first 8 miles, chatted with a local hiker named Don (spotted twice), then Patts and I laid in the grass to enjoy the sun! Mr. Don blessed me with one of his wooden AT tokens and plenty of wisdom/experience. Forgot to get a picture with him, even when I ran into him a 3rd time the next day. Stayed at the same parking lot outside Boonsboro in the car with Patsy overnight, which was a tad warmer 🙏than the previous night. Hoping to start getting calls for shuttles as we move northbound with all the flip-floppers who are probably going to zero (no-miles rest day) soon.Read more

  • Flip-floppers Send-off!

    April 21, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Nicholas (Explanation) officially started his thru-hike today! I got to join and witness the warm send-off/scenic walk of the flip-floppers through Harper's Ferry to the Potomac River Train Bridge by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy staff and volunteers. I got a whole new perspective of them and all that they do to keep the trail wild! I'm so grateful to have been a part of Nick's beginning of an incredible journey, one that was very different from mine <3Read more

  • Day 1 - H.Ferry to Boonsboro

    Apr 21–22, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

I began my solo journey soon after seeing Nicholas off. I took some time to chat with the ATC volunteers and walked back to my car with them to retrieve Patts. After whiz&poops and reassurance treats, we drove north to get ahead of Nick. We didn't get any shuttles today, and got kicked out of tenting at the Ensign Cowall parking lot. But I met a nice Smithsburg local there who gave me a few protein bars. I then reversed southbound and took a stroll down memory lane through Gathland State Park. I took some time to hang my shuttle signs in the car windows, and found a nice big trailhead parking lot closer to where Explanation would be hiking through. Patty and I slept in the car for the first time 😬. They were calling for a frost so it got pretty cold around midnight or so 🥶. Nothing a little cuddle won't fix! But I'm glad I brought blankets for her.Read more
