Day 1 - Perth to Ho Chi Minh City

    March 16 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

We had a seamless flight to Vietnam on Singapore Airlines.... all was going well ... until arrival at HCMC!

Despite paying more to go via the visa express lane, Troy was denied entry (spelling error on his visa!) ... so 1.5hrs and $250 later we got through unscathed! 😆

And to think how chuffed we were with ourselves for paying the extra for express - the normal queue was crazy long and over an hour wait! 🙃

I booked an AirBnB for like $110pn and its awesome... huge apartment with awesome views! 👌

My Aussie friend Quyen (originally from HCMC) recommended a restaurant for dinner... we looked around and there was absolutely noone else eating here! Normally I would NOT dine here because of this... but we did anyway cos I trusted her taste considering she's a restaurant owner!!

Long story short... turns out we'd walked into the wrong one but thankfully the food was clean and we didnt get sick!

So from waking up at 3am to dinner at 7pm, it was a very long day needless to say, we slept well!😴

  • Day 2 - HCMC Walkabout

    March 17 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Big day of exploring on foot today.

At 1st when we drove in from the airport, we said how alike HCM was to Bali! ...maybe because of the heat, the scooters, the people and its prices?! 🤔

A couple days in and we can clearly see this place is way cleaner & more evolved than Bali!

Troy got nabbed by the shoe repair crazies on the street today ... I was wondering why they were so intent on checking out everyone's feet! 😆 ... they were trying to fix his very old thongs that he's planning throw after this trip! Oh well, the $2.50 was worth it for the photo!

We checked out Saigon Square & Ben Thanh Markets (def prefer the former). Ben Thanh is so over stimulating, hot, crowded & just crazy! ... Bali haggling is quiet banter compared to this place!

For dinner we went to the Café Apartments — once home to military bigwigs in the 60s, now stacked with cafés and one of HCMC’s coolest tourist spots.

We finished the night with a foot massage in what we will now label our worst yet... like EVER!! 🤣

  • Day 3 - Cu Chi Tunnels & Mekong Tour

    March 18 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

We left at 7am for a full 12hr day with VIP Limousine tour - only 10 people in the van!

    1st stop - Handicapped handicrafts
2nd stop - Cu Chi Tunnels
    3rd stop - Lunch
4th stop - Mekong Delta boat to Coconut Island
5th stop - boat to another island for 'gondola' ride through jungle
Then back on the boat to the mainland for the long drive home - arriving back at 7pm!

What a brilliant action packed day we had! Especially loved the jungle boat ride at the end! 💚... was nice to get out of the city. Once out though, it was evident how much alike Vietnam & Bali are!

  • Day 4 & 5 - More exploring!

    Mar 19–20 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Days 4 & 5 were spent wondering around taking in some more sights! This city is massive with a population of 20million 😱

Saigon Post Office - crazy busy and couldn't wait to get out of here!

Book street - quaint lil Street lined with book shops - go figure!

Flower Market Street - walked for an hour to get here and was a huge let-down! 🤣... but got to pet some cute doggos along the way!

We grabbed a Grab (uber) back... scenery wasn't nice enough to walk all the way back again! 😬

Had an afternoon swim in the hotel pool then went out on the town to an italian restaurant called Pizza 4P's - 4.9⭐️ with 30k reviews! ... it was brilliant 👌

Then we grabbed another Grab to Landmark 81 - the tallest building in Vietnam! - to see Saigon from an observation deck on the 81st floor! ✨️

The next day we prepared for a morning visit to the highly recommended but very confronting War Remnants museum....

We wandered around for 10mins before realising we were at the wrong museum! ...confused it with the War 'Memorial' Museum 😛... oh well, was worth it for the angel that flew by! 👼 😉

Another 10min walk and we arrived at the intended museum... all I can say is that we came, we saw & yes we were horrified! The graphic images and harrowing stories will forever be remembered 🕊

  • Day 6 & 7 - Le Meridian Saigon Hotel

    Mar 21–22 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Today we jumped ship to the other side of town for Troy's work conference....its about a 20min walk from where we stayed before.
The room is huge - not as big and airy as the last place but decent!

I was very fortunate tonight to be offered a seat on the vespa street food tour with the conference peeps! I seriously couldn't wipe the smile off my face... was so much fun! Troy opted for a seat on the bus ... boring!! 😴

They took us to 4 different places on the tour - a rooftop bar, street food, restaurant & live music bar!
Would highly recommend... we were like a sea of orange! There would have been over 50 riders! Not once did I feel unsafe 🙌

  • Day 8 & 9- Phu Quoc

    Mar 23–24 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We departed HCM today bound for the island of Phu Quoc - only a 1hr flight away!

I was fortunate to arrive at midday but Troy had to endure a company tour of the Rheem factory - a 2hr bus ride from HCM, a 2hr ride back THEN a 1hr plane ride - he eventually got here around 5.30pm.

The company have put us up in JW Marriot Phu Quoc Resort & Spa Emerald Bay! ... holy guacamole, this place is something else!! The resort is designed around a fictional old, prestigious french Univerity dedicated to natural sciences and is divvied up into 18 faculties.... very swish!

We all then ventured into Sunset Town - a very cool, surreal place that seriously felt like the Truman show meets Pleasantville. We had our faces scanned to enter the 'Kiss of the Sea' show which was interesting! 🤔

The show itself was spectacular. As google explains - Its a high-tech, romantic fantasy show about a local man and an alien guardian fighting dark forces to protect Earth. It merges water, fire, laser, and 3D mapping technologies with acrobatic performances.

On the evening of Day 9, while Troy attended the Gala Dinner to wrap up his conference, I opted for a push-bike tour to see the sunset 🙌

  • Day 10 to 12 - Andochine Resort & Trip H

    Mar 25–27 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

With the conference officially done & dusted, we regrettably departed the most beautiful resort we've ever stayed at and headed to Andochine Villas on the other side of the island for a couple of nights.

The idea was just to chill here, so we cycled, swam, read, walked & ate! It was nice, but not a place we would visit again!

With Cyclone Narelle threatening to thwart our flight plans, we boarded our flights hoping for a smooth trip home 🤞... hopefully avoiding Kalgoorlie!

UPDATE: 2 landings aborted but we made it on the 3rd... the pilots got claps and cheers when we touched down 🙌

Sadly, our bags didn't make it back with us 😔... interesting that every one of the conference attendees that came from Phu Quoc to Perth, also had no bags!! Its definitely Scoot related as that was the only connecting airline back to Singapore.
