• Nice Day 4

    7 мая 2024 г., Франция ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

A bit overcast and cool today, but still we'll take it after the previous few weeks. Today we headed to the Cimiez district. It's mostly a hilly area east of the main part of Nice. On the posh side, it was host to Queen Victoria and was the high end district before Cap Mont-Ferrat and Villefranche-Sur-Mer took over. It also has an ancient history.
We visited the Roman ruins, mostly a series of baths, plus a nearly demolished arena. This was a huge settlement, by the day's standards. The town was served by not just one bath, but three, one for each district. They all had heated pools, as well as warm and cold pools for bathing. And two of them had swimming pools. The Matisse museum is also right here, and some of the excavations began with its construction. We didn't go in though because all the Matisse material is currently on loan to other museums. Go figure.
Later, we walked through a couple more beautiful residential districts in old Nice.
