Art Deco Walking Tour - South Beach

    October 30, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The Miami Beach Architectural District (sometimes called the Art Deco District) contains the largest concentration of 1920s and 1930s resort architecture in the United States. The buildings constructed in the 1920s were designed almost exclusively in the Mediterranean Revival style, while those built in the 1930s are in the Art Deco, International, or Moderne styles. The area is well known as the district where Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace resided, and was murdered, in a mansion on Ocean Drive.

We took a 2 hour tour offered by the Art Deco welcome center. Learned a lot about the history of Miami Beach from its beginnings to now as well as how the Art Deco District came to be placed on the National Register Listing. Learned a lot especially about the characteristics that define each style including Art Decos Rule of Three. Plus our somewhat older lady tour guide gave us a great new term - she pointed out a spot where people often take "faceys" ("selfies" are SO yesterday).
