La Paz

La Paz ist mit einer Höhe von 3.600m der höchste Regierungssitz der Welt und wenn man es zu Fuß erkundet ist man ganz schnell aus der Puste (vor allem weil es hier ständig auf und ab geht). Dafür ist die Aussicht hier aber auch spektakulär! Umringt von den Anden und mit dem Schneebedeckten Illimani im Hintergrund lohnt es sich hier auf jeden Fall mehr als einen der in und um die Stadt liegenden Aussichtspunkte zu erklimmen. Einfacher macht das ganze ein Netz aus Seilbahnen, die Telefericos, die La Paz zum Beispiel auch mit dem nochmal 400m höher liegenden El Alto verbinden.
In La Paz und El Alto gibt es viel zu entdecken, zum Beispiel ein Gefängniskomplex, der mitten in der Stadt liegt und in dem die Insassen teilweise mit ihrer Familien leben und sich ihre Zelle selbst mieten müssen (je nach Kosten gibt es dann mehr oder weniger Luxus) oder ein wunderschöner Friedhof, der mit vielen tollen Graffitis verziert ist. Es gibt außerdem den berüchtigten „Hexenmarkt“ zu bestaunen, hier kann man alle möglichen Tränke, Tinkturen und andere Zutaten für Rituale kaufen, dazu gehören auch getrocknete Babylamas bzw. Lamaföten. Den passenden Schamanen für sein Ritual findet man übrigens nebenan. In El Alto gibt es außerdem jeden Donnerstag und Sonntag einen riesigen Wochenmarkt, auf dem man von Essen über Klamotten bis gebrauchten Autoteilen alles finden kann. Der Markt ist riesig und erstreckt sich gefühlt über die ganze Stadt. Wenn man dann fertig ist mit Shoppen kann man sich hier Abends das Cholita Wrestling angucken. Hier kämpfen Frauen in ihrer traditionellen Kleidung, was bei den riesigen Röcken sehr spektakulär aussieht!

At 3,600m La Paz is the highest administrative capital in the world and when trying to explore it on foot your out of breath fast. The view here is spectacular though. Surrounded by the Andes and with the snow covered peak of the Illimani in the background, it is well worth visiting one of the many viewpoints scattered across the city. This is made much easier by the cable car system that runs through La Paz which also connects it with the 400m higher El Alto. In La Paz and El Alto there is a lot to discover. There is the prison complex San Pedro for example, that lies in the middle of the city and where inmates can live with their families and pay for their cells (depending on the price, they can be more or less luxurious). There is also a beautiful cemetery that is decorated with great graffitis. You can also explore the notorious “Witches market” where you can find many potions and other ingredients for rituals, this includes dried lama babies and fetuses. If you need a shaman to perform the ritual, they can be found next door. Every Thursday and Sunday El Alto turns into a giant flea market where you can buy anything from food over clothes to used auto parts. If you’re looking for evening entertainment after the shopping you should definitely check out the Cholita Wrestling. Here indigenous women fight in their traditional clothes, which looks pretty spectacular with the massive skirts.Read more
