Day 6 - end of trek and relax in Moshi
October 11 in Tanzania ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C
Trek Data: 10km, 2,5 hours (3hon the board)
Starting Elevation: 3100hm
Finishing Elevation: 1700hm
After the breakfast it was time to pack the bags for one last time. The path down was nice, we walked through the nice green rainforest. After less then 2,5 hours we arrived to Mweka Gate and I could for first time after 6 Days go to normal bathroom with running water. It felt like heaven 🥹.
During lunch in nearby restaurant, the climbing certificate was handed out and I invited the whole team for drinks. It was now time to say goodbye to my crew and depart to the hotel in Moshi.
Here are some facts about Kilimanjaro and trekking routes:
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world, a dormant volcano with three cones, and one of the Seven Summits. Routes vary in length and success rate, with popular options including the Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, and Northern Circuit routes. It features five distinct climate zones, from tropical rainforest to arctic desert, and its summit, Uhuru Peak, is 5,895 meters high.
Facts about Mount Kilimanjaro
- Highest freestanding mountain: It is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest freestanding mountain in the world.
- As the highest mountain of Africa the Uhuru peak is known as one of the Seven Summits (7 highest mountains on each continent) making the mountain extremely popular between normal and professional climbers.
-Three volcanic cones: Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano formed from three cones: Kibo (the highest, where the summit is located), Mawenzi (extinct), and Shira (now a plateau).
-Volcanic activity: While dormant, it is considered a volcano that could erupt again, with the last major eruption occurring about 360,000 years ago.
-Climate zones: Climbing it is like trekking across continents, transitioning through five different climate zones.
-Glaciers are disappearing: The mountain's glaciers are shrinking, with reports indicating significant ice loss over the past century.
-Uhuru Peak: The highest point is Uhuru Peak, located on the Kibo crater rim, at an elevation of 5,895 meters.
Climbing routes
Marangu Route: One of the most popular and shortest routes, though it has a lower success rate of around 50%. The only route where you sleep in Huts.
Machame Route: A popular option with a good success rate, known as the "Whiskey Route".
Lemosho Route: A longer route that starts on the western side and offers great views.
Shira Route: Starts at a high altitude and crosses the Shira Plateau.
Northern Circuit: The longest route, offering the highest success rate (around 95%) due to its slow ascent and extensive acclimatization.
Rongai Route: A good option for those seeking a less crowded and more challenging climb, with the added benefit of viewing Mawenzi Peak up close.
Umbwe Route: The shortest and steepest route, which is very demanding with a low success rate.
For the night I booked the hotel called: Shose Farmhouse, incredible property with pool, onsite restaurant and beautiful gardens. Perfect place to relax and enjoy last views of Kilimanjaro.Read more
