Day 9: Leaving KK for Sepilok by Millen

Waking up early (for a holiday), mum and dad and I took advantage of the hotel’s luxury amenities and headed to the gym. Following an intensive workout we were joined by Arushi and Eashan at the breakfast buffet, where we fuelled ourselves for the journey ahead. After I had a final dip and goodbye to the pool, we packed our bags and said farewell to the luxury hotel that we had been so fortunate to stay in. As we drove to the airport, looking out to the city that we had barely explored, we were all excited for our return in a few days time.
After a short flight, we arrived in Sandakan, we quickly hopped in the grab taxis and arrived at our destination, Sepilok B&B, where we were welcomed by 3 stray dogs staring us down .
After dropping off our bags, we decided to explore the neighbouring rainforest, Sepilok rainforest discovery centre (SRDC). Despite missing out on the evening guided walk, we were equally happy walking on the skywalk trail, a 628 meter canopy walk towering 28 meters (felt much higher) over the Rainforest floor. My favourite part was the flying squirrel which i managed to luckily capture the animal taking of and gliding into the air. The canopy levelled us with the top of the lively forest, which was bustling with birds swooping around and calls and tweets from various animals.

After the canopy walk came to an end at Bristle-head tower, we walked down the spiral staircase of the watchtower to the floor. We walked along the lake trail, the path was much closer to the life of the forest and subsequently much spookier. We trekked along warily, cautious of anything that moved including the leaves blowing in the breeze. Completing the walk, we crossed a rope bridge which hovered no more than a metre over the water, the mix of this, the instability and mum warning us of crocodiles made me and Eashan rush hastily over the bridge to the relieving safety of the other side.
Wanting to avoid a meal at the B & B, Arushi found a local restaurant. The high reviews and lack of anything else being remotely close easily attracted us. After a filling and delicious meal, we retired to the B&B, which was a short 2 min walk in the pitch dark. While the lizards living in every corner, questioning toilet smell and constant animal noises surrounding the room definitely added to the charm, they did not help with the much needed rest.Read more
