    Lockdown lifted!

    March 26, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ❄️ -3 °C

Good news today that Wales 'stay local' restrictions will be lifted so all we need now is for the current snow storm to pass and we are off!! Our plan is to leave home next Friday (Easter Friday) and bike to join the Lon Las Cymru bike route down to South Wales to visit nanny (Rob's mum). We think it will take us 6 days but don't really know how far Seth will manage in a day. We will have 1 regular bike (Rob), one Seth sized bike and my converted ebike with panniers and a tag along for the big uphills. The battery won't last long between charges so Seth will be riding as much as possible unaided. Covid restrictions means there won't be many options for shelter along the way so we'll be eating lots of takeaway chips and sleeping in our tent in a mix of wild camp spots and people's gardens and staying as self-contained as possible. Friends who live in Wales, we would love to see friendly faces along the way. I've attached a picture of the route plan and approximate overnight locations.Read more

  • Last minute planning

    April 1, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Rob and I have had second thoughts about taking a highly emotional and strong willed 5 year old on a 350km bike tour with snow forecast during a global pandemic. After a family meeting we have decided to go ahead anyway ☺. Let's hope we don't regret this too many times! We have a route plan, a presenter for our video diaries and an agreement signed by everyone. Now to finish packing the bikes and get some sleep before we start tomorrow!Read more

  • Corris

    April 3, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Tent set up in Al's garden in Corris thank you Al. Another 60km day with a few technical issues and minor Seth accidents but all good. Now to check the forecast and decide how much further we can make it.Read more

  • We have cheated!!

    April 4, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Happy Easter🐣! Rob couldn't turn down the offer of a lift up the biggest hill on the route with a good excuse that Seth really needs a shorter day today! Thank you so much Al and Teg for a lovely garden camp spot and outdoor supper, Robin and Tomos for fantastic Seth company and Al for a lift up the hill! Frozen helmets this morning but we were cosy in the tent. Getting close to half way now!Read more

  • Day 4 morning

    April 5, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Small boy snoring next to me under a doubled up adult sleeping bag. After 3 days biking we found our neighbours in a field. Turns out Jess really does love penguins! After near disaster in the ford yesterday we had a brilliant ride. We have now turned off the Lon Las Cymru for a bit and went through forest tracks and then a long descent through the forest and along a valley bridleway with Seth riding it all and me wobbling along behind! Rob's home made stove made it out again to cook dinner.Read more

  • Brrrrrr

    April 5, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ❄️ 3 °C

After a hail storm while we were packing the kit up we decided not to go up into the Elan Valley and instead heading back to the Sustrans 8 and to Rhaedar for hot chocolate. Aiming for Erwood tonight to a friend of a friend's garden via a hot meal in Builth Wells hopefully! I broke my chain this morning but handily we were right by a farm and Seth and i got to meet the lambs while Rob fixed it. Thanks Rob 😊Read more

  • Over 200km now

    April 5, 2021 in Wales ⋅ 🌙 2 °C

62km today. I was just thinking this afternoon that it had been a type 2 fun kind of day when Seth told me he'd had the loveliest day so far! We stopped for a break and bumped in to some people I used to work with in Builth Wells and Seth spent the time riding jumps on his bike. As if over 200km in the saddle hadn't been enough! Supper was Burger King eaten on the pavement with no chips as they had run out! Seth went for avocado sandwiches instead! Weird child. The boys are now both asleep. Rob definitely started snoring first! We are now planning to stay at an outdoor centre tomorrow night so will have a bit more shelter from the cold. Almost there - sort of!Read more

  • Cosy

    April 6, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

Seth is in a doubled up adult sleeping bag. The nights have got progressive colder meaning I am constantly worrying and checking him. He is always cosy warm. In fact most of the time this trip he's been complaining about being too hot and trying to take layers off! Just me who feels the cold 🥶. One last night tonight which looks like it will continue the trend and be colder still but we are all kitted up to stay warm. Nanny I hope you are ready for 3 very smelly arrivals??Read more

  • Night 5

    April 6, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

Made it to the top of the Brecon Beacons and the final camp. We have upgraded and are camping at Dolygaer Outdoors with a toilet block! Luxury. Forecast rain shower at 2pm turned in to hail and snow most of the day! It has been epic but really fun! Downhill almost all the way to nanny's house tomorrow :-)Read more

  • Day 5

    April 7, 2021 in Wales ⋅ 🌙 -2 °C

A few more photos from day 5 including some of this morning's 'short cut' up a very steep bridleway. Photos from the very short rideable section! Oops. I also seem to have captured the moment of sunshine and missed the frequent snow storms!!Read more

    April 8, 2021 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Thank you to everyone who helped us with this trip. To Al and family for garden space, company on the bikes, gorgeous outdoor food and the best company / entertainment for Seth on night 2. To Ian for garden space and drying Seth's boots before the really cold weather came in. To Dolygaer Outdoor Centre and Glangwy Farm campsites for organising sole use of toilet facilities so we could be self contained and extra thanks to Dolygaer for a warm welcome and hot chocolate after biking through a snow storm and to Dave Brown for organising this for us at the last minute. To our neighbours Jess, Steve and Medi for taking a child car seat on holiday to Brecon to be able to rescue us if necessary and for delivery of goodies. To friends and family for encouragement and suggestions. To nanny for being our motivation to keep riding and for food, laundry and beds to recover! To Rob for being as stupid as me and thinking this was a good idea (or a better idea than another lockdown week at home ;-)) and of course to Seth the superstar for keeping going and mostly having fun along the way!
