    Salta, Argentina

    September 14, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

    📍Salta, Argentina

What a day! Turns out we arrived to Salta on their biggest religious festival of the year. Which meant thousands of pilgrims parading through the streets after apparently walking for weeks to get here today. It also meant sold-out onwards buses for us and walking through crowds clutching our passports and wads of cash after exchanging money, which is probably everything they tell you not to do in the visitor guides...

But it was all worth it for the experience of watching the celebrations and getting to see local car garages joyously spraying everyone in their vicinity with water to keep cool.

So far, Salta seems beautiful with lots of colonial-style buildings. And the good news is, we're back again in a few days so we can explore when some of the madness has died down. We've got our sights set on the cable car here to see the town from above... Watch this space!

    The drive to Cafayate, Argentina

    September 15, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

    📍Cafayate, Argentina

"The most amazing drive I've ever been on". Yep, high praise coming from Señor Watt himself about our guided bus journey from Salta to Cafayete. We only booked this tour last night after yesterday's festivities meant the regular bus was fully booked. And boy oh boy, did the landscape put on a real show for us - canyons, gorges, other-worldly landscapes made this perhaps the best drive we've ever been on. You really felt like a little group of traditional Gauchos would come running over any minute. The geography grad was in HEAVEN and said he "wished he had longer just to stand there and look."

It's 20°C colder here at night, but for now we're going full gringo - moose t-shirt, Zimbabwe cap, shorts and sandals. Cannae beat it. Tomorrow will bring some wine tours, as we try out the produce from the second highest altitude wine making area in the world after Tibet 🍷

P.S. can you spot my shadow wave in one of the videos? Hola!

    Cafayate - 3 night stay

    September 15, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

    📍Cafayate, Argentina

A sleepy, dusty, and baking hot wee town found in Calchaquí Valleys with huge mountain ranges on either side known for making wine, which we absolutely loved spending time in! The perfect place to chill, read our books, and drink wine for three days. Turns out backpacking for a week is tiring 😅

Adam's come over to the dark side, and now claims to like wine instead of just beer, so we did a wine tour. In another gringo move, we decided to walk to the bodega out of town in the scorching desert heat which wasn't our finest moment but we made it and then... we made some travelling pals!

Of course we got v excited to meet new people and put our wine skills to the test... which meant a hungover drive home today after a night out, and now we're gearing up for an 8pm bedtime. Bliss.

    Salta (take 2)

    September 18, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    📍 Salta, Argentina (take 2)

Our second time in Salta, so obviously we're locals now. And this time, we took on the cable car ride for amazing views of the city and to try on hats at 1,500m elevation. What fun! Still a beautiful city and we're glad we ventured up, as it definitely feels less touristy than Buenos Aires.

This time there wasn't a festival happening so we got to wander around slowly and go into an interesting museum which literally had tiny little Inca people preserved and on display to the public 🤯 But we did raise the stakes on this visit as we've got our first dodgy stomach of the trip (sorry for telling everyone Adam), which should be fun for our 11 hour bus journey over the Andes which starts at 1am this morning...
