Rain fell throughout the night and we woke to a soggy, wet camp ground.
The rain continued to fall throughout the day with little letup.
After waiting 19 years to come back and do the tour of the Tom Price Mine we checked to find out that the tour was cancelled today and due to OHS wouldn’t be on for at least another 2 or 3 days!
As a company mining town Tom Price had a Coles and a small shopping area which we wandered around. Went to the information centre and also found a really nice coffee shop, the Pickled Bean. Spent the afternoon around the camp ground as the rain eased up only to return again overnight.Read more

Bullara Station

After leaving Tom Price in light rain we continued to drive through rain as we headed toward Exmouth. As we hit the North West Coastal Highway we came across a section of flooded road which really just typified our day.
The rain continued to fall and we decided to spend the night at Bullara Station, about 90kms short of Exmouth.
The Station was very well set up for camping with designated sites, a camp manager, plenty of toilets and showers and a camp kitchen.
Highlights also included 3 joeys that had just arrived at the station, several designated walking tracks and fresh cooked damper for happy hour.
But the rain still continued to fall!Read more

Exmouth

Woke to the sun shining and a clear blue sky.
With less than 100 kms to drive today we enjoyed the morning at Bullara Station by taking the ‘Bottle Walk’ (marks by bottles on sticks for 1.3kms) out to the red sand dune and spotted a bower birds nest on the way.
As we left the station we called in at the homestead for coffee and scones in the sun before heading for Exmouth.
Following a recommendation from Neville and Judy at Bullara we stopped off at the Krait / Potshot memorial. This was the departure point for the Krait in WW2 which sailed to Singapore Harbour, sinking 5 ships in a raid and then returned to base. Potshot was the name of the American base established at this point to service and resupply submarines during WW2.
After stopping here we headed into Exmouth and set up before having lunch in the town centre, a Beef and Reef pie containing steak, prawns and scallops.
Went out to the Vlamingh Head lighthouse, once again with a fantastic display on the lighthouse precinct and its contribution to WW2.Read more

Day 41
Cape Range National Park

Left early in the morning for a day in Cape Range National Park which includes to Ningaloo Reef.
Drove through to the bottom end of the park to Yardie Creek to start to day and walked around the creek to the beach. Dropped in at several camping spots and beaches before getting into the water at Osprey Bay to try out the snorkels and flippers.
Had a great time in the warm water and saw lots of smaller fish in this bay.
Drove to Turquoise Bay next and had an amazing time on this beautiful beach. Snorkeling in this beach we saw lots of fish, coral, sea slugs and even a couple of stingrays.
Decided to stay here for the afternoon and spent the time on the beach and snorkeling.
Arrived back at the van about 5 pm after a great day.Read more

Woke today to an overcast day which never really cleared all day.
Had a quiet morning and caught up with washing and shopping before driving out to Charles Knife Canyon and lookouts this afternoon.
This area was amazing considering it is set in an area with coast on both sides.
When we returned to the van we bumped into Cliff and Fiona Goulding and had drinks and swapped stories.Read more

Caught up with some chores in Exmouth after packing up before heading down to Coral Bay where we are booked in for 4 nights.
This was one of our favourite places when we were here 19 years ago so we had pretty big expectations heading into town and we weren’t disappointed.
The town appears to have changed little and the site we booked at the People’s Caravan Park back in February is fabulous.
We set up the van on a paved site and headed across the road to the beach. While the tide was dropping we hopped into the water and within 2 metres of the sand the water dropped away quickly with dozens of different fish of all shapes and sizes. The water was warm and the sun was shining on a perfect day.Read more

Kicking back at Coral Bay

When you are travelling constantly it is amazing how you get into a routine of enjoying where you are while constantly forward to the next destination. Having said this it has been nice to kick back for the last 2 days and enjoy being in the one lovely place.
While the weather has been cloudy at times it has not spoilt any of our time here.
The town, our site, the beach and reef have been terrific and we have had a ball.
The snorkeling is amazing and having to just walk across the road to the beach has made it so simple.
Went for a drive this morning to the south and ended up letting the tyres down as the track took us through the sand dunes towards the beach. The final loop of the track took you back along the sand dunes lining the beach but we thought this was not the best thing to do for the dunes so returned via the track.
The fish so close to the shore when snorkeling are a constant amazement and the simple underwater camera we have doesn’t really do the scenes justice. The wide variety of sea creatures are amazing.Read more

The snorkeling here at Coral Bay is something that you never get bored with. every time you go into the water there is something different to see and wonder at.
There are so many varieties of fish within metres of the beach that captivates and surprises.
Being under the water today and watching the sea weed from below also created a different feel.

Because we have seen the weather forecast down south we have decided to chicken out and head back to Exmouth for a few days, putting off the trip south as long as we can,😉Read more

Exmouth Revisited

After reviewing our schedule and looking at the weather down south and at home we decided to head back up to Exmouth from Coral Bay in order to spend a few extra days at Exmouth and in the Turquoise Bay Area.

After 2 superb days by the beach sunning and snorkeling we packed to van late on Sunday 17 June with a forecast for rain the next day to travel through.

As we were packing we realised that the people beside us were Rob and Maureen who we had a drink with at Kulgera Roadhouse on our way to Alice Springs.Read more

Left Exmouth on an humid, overcast morning and drove into rain, heavy rain. This last the entire 350 km trip to Carnarvon and resulted in localised flooding in several areas with water running across the road.

Stopped at Minilya Roadhouse which had the forecourt flooded, water covering the main driveway area, and pumps not working due to the flooding.

Made it into Carnarvon and set up before being underwhelmed by the town. Maybe a wet dreary day wasn’t the best day to visit.

One interesting find was at a cafe near the now closed 1 Mile Jetty was a display that included on of the life boats from the Komoran, the German Ship which the HMAS Sydney during WW2, which came ashore with German survivors near Quobba Station.Read more
