    Drive to Aviano

    1 de outubro de 2024, Eslovênia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We packed up and said our goodbyes to our friends in Maribor this morning. We are heading to Aviano Air Base in Italy to visit more friends.
The drive through Slovenia 🇸🇮 was colorful, mountainous and a lot of farm land.
Stopped for lunch at the border and Bill had a nice 4 cheese pizza and his last Union 0.0, CJ had Panna Cotta with fruit and a cappuccino! Daisy was well behaved! We gassed up and got back in the road.
Off to the LVIS gate of the Aviano Air Base to get our credentials.
Got to our friends, Michael, Michelle and Loren’s beautiful home. Pizza for dinner, chatting till 10:30 and off to bed.

    Grado and Aquileia

    2 de outubro de 2024, Itália ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Little road trip today despite the mist in the air! Stopped to pick up Daisy’s food and off we go.
Grado: Once mainly a fishing centre, known commonly as L'Isola del Sole ("The Island of the Sun"). It is also famous because it is a spa town; from 1873 a maritime hospice for children called Ospizio Marino wanted by the doctor Giuseppe Barellai was established on the island, because the climate and the environment of the island are a good place for the treatment of some childhood diseases. It is also chocked full of Roman Ruins and ancient artifacts.

Today there are frequent finds of inscriptions, sarcophagi, marble sculpture and small bronzes that once furnished its villas. The remains of one of these villas have been excavated on the islet of Gorgo in the lagoon.

Aquileia: an ancient Roman city in Italy, at the head of the Adriatic at the edge of the lagoons, about 10 kilometres (6 mi) from the sea, on the river Natiso (modern Natisone), the course of which has changed somewhat since Roman times. Today, the city is small (about 3,500 inhabitants), but it was large and prominent in classical antiquity as one of the world's largest cities with a population of 100,000 in the second century AD 6 and is one of the main archaeological sites of northern Italy. In late antiquity the city was the first city in the Italian Peninsula to be sacked by Attila the Hun. Aquileia Cathedral is a flat-roofed basilica that was erected by Patriarch Poppo in 1031 on the site of an earlier church and rebuilt in the Gothic style by Patriarch Marquard of Randeck (1365-1381)

  • Antique shopping 10-3 & 10-4

    3 de outubro de 2024, Itália ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Well, the rain is still coming down. So we decided to check out some antique stores. We did not remember on our lazy rainy morning that most things close between 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM for the traditional Italian siesta. So we are able to get to two antique storesand headed back for a sandwich and a nap before we go to practice with the Aviano high school team.
Day two of Antiques - we are leaving earlier today to get a jump on this.
Heading to the Bargain Bazaar first!
Bargain Bazaar was nice and around the corner was another.
Funny, we like antique shops and tend to visit them on rainy days when we are traveling (in the States and Europe). Many times it’s a walk down memory lane for us. CJ’s mom was a big antique bargain shopper and dragged her three kids all over. Treasures found and have stayed in the family over the years, a big part would be the memories made while searching for the treasures.
Three stores today and then back for lunch.
Practice today with the Aviano HS team before their big Dig Pink matches tomorrow vs Sigonella (DoDEA school from Sicily.
    Let’s go Saints!!!
