Artistic lava rock!

All around Portugal and the Azores you will find artistic use of lava rock on the roads and sidewalks. This is truly typical Portugal and really amazing!

Tour of East San Miguel - Azores

Today, we took a guided tour of the East end of San Miguel Island. We visited Furnas which is a village entirely built in the crater of a volcano - still fairly active. This is where they put together a delicious stew of meat, sausage, and vegetables in a pot and bury it in the ground for 6 hours and let nature, and the active Sulphur hot springs do the cooking. Delicious! We took in the beautiful mountainous areas and stopped of at the highest point for a photo op of Lake Furnas - one of San Miguel's volcanic lakes. There were so many gorgeous sights it was hard to capture even a fraction of them. No wonder they call the Azores the Hawaii of Europe.Read more

San Miguel Museum of Sacred Arts

Visited the museum of sacred arts and the old convent - really amazing. The altar in the museum is hand-carved wood!

Sintra: Pena Palace and Moorish Castle

A visit to Sintra where we went to Pena Palace and climbed the many stairs to the top of the Moorish Castle. Beautiful place!

Well, we are winding up our Portugese adventure ... only a few more days. Today, we had a walk around Cascais, located just 40 minutes from Lisbon. Weather was perfect and we came across a hidden park area in the municipal arts district ... Another beautiful day in Portugal.Read more
