    Wildlife & Botanic Nature Park

    Next to the historic whaling station is the wildlife and nature park; this is included in the price.

    I thoroughly enjoyed the walk around the gardens. This is a nature photographer's paradise, featuring dozens of wildflower specimens endemic to the southwest region of WA.Read more

    Elephant Rocks & Green Pool

    Elephant Rocks and Elephant Cove lie nestled in the heart of the William Bay National Park.
    Elephant Rocks is an absolute breathtaking display of nature's artistry, resembling a majestic herd of elephants gracefully wading in the gentle waters of the Great Australian Bight in the Southern Ocean. These massive cracked oval boulders stand proudly, gazing out upon the vast expanse of the ocean.

    Greens Pool is another spectacular coastal location locals call "The Aquarium," and for good reason: beautiful crystalline waters perfect for snorkeling, with lots of fish and marine life to explore, rocks in the middle of the pool to climb upon and jump from, and breathtaking views.

    Madfish Bay

    Madfish Bay is a group of small beaches separated by natural rock outcroppings. The waters are somewhat sheltered, with large rock reefs not far offshore. Many fish are known to inhabit the waters around Madfish Bay, including whiting, bream, and salmon. This is the perfect spot for fishing, swimming and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters. At low tide, you can walk across to Madfish Bay Island, but it  apparently is known for snakes.

    The turquoise waters of Madfish Bay are magnificent in summer. The waves at this beach come from two different directions.

    In winter, the ocean swells swirl around the island and smash into each other along a sand spit. This can be viewed safely from the rocks.

    West Cape Howe

    West Cape Howe National Park contains the most southerly point in Western Australia, Torbay Head.

    Almost completely covered in heathland and forest and bearing the force of the Southern Ocean, this place was certainly worth the visit, despite the near gale force winds!

    The scenery is outstanding featuring dramatic sea cliffs, limestone outcrops, karri forests, heathlands, white sandy beaches and rock islands.

    Located south-west of Albany, West Cape Howe houses the famous Shelley Beach, and Shelley Beach Lookout where platforms are built into the side of the hilltop for hang-gliders and para-gliders to launch.

    The Pemberton Tramway Company Pty Ltd is a privately operated tourist railway in the southwest of Western Australia, which conveys tourists through deep forests and picturesque countryside as well as recreating the history of the timber railways that were so important to the development and growth of the region. The railway operates diesel hydraulic trams over a total route length of 10 km.

    Beedalup Falls

    Christmas Day, we went for a drive to Beedelup Falls. These falls are very picturesque, even though there wasn't much water due to the lack of rain. We had a wonderful walk among the karri trees; we loved the ambiance. The birdsong as you walked through the karri trees was interesting and worth the visit. As you venture further along the walkways, it leads to a suspension bridge—a nice little surprise.

    Merry Christmas

    Christmas Day, we spent the day exploring Beedelup Falls, stopped at Pemberton Pool where we treated ourselves to raspberry smoothies and shared an apple pie before heading back to the caravan park for beer and a delicious Christmas dinner of baked ham, roast lamb, and vegetables, followed by chocolate cake with banana and whipped cream.

    WA Grain

    The grains industry is the largest agricultural sector in Western Australia delivering around $5.9 billion in grain exports to the state economy each year (5-year average) – with the majority of this coming from cereal production ($4.5 billion) and contributions from oilseeds ($1.3 billion) and legumes ($0.18 billion).

    WA produces about 18 million tonnes of grain each year from around 4000 rain-fed farms, most ranging in size from 1000 to 15,000 hectares. Wheat is the state’s major grain crop with about 8-10 million tonnes produced each year followed by barley, canola, oats, lupins and field peas.

    The state’s grain production area, known as the ‘wheatbelt’, contains around fifteen million hectares of arable land across the south-west corner of the state. Around nine million hectares of this is cropped each year.

    The WA grains industry is export-oriented with 80-90% of annual grain production exported to more than 50 countries worldwide with Asia and the Middle East our largest markets.

    Wave Rock

    Wave Rock is a natural rock formation that is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. The "wave" is about 15 m high and around 110 m long. It forms the north side of a solitary hill, which is known as "Hyden Rock". This hill, which is a granite inselberg, lies about 3 km east of the small town of Hyden and 296 km east-southeast of Perth, Western Australia.
     
    A wall lies above Wave Rock about halfway up Hyden Rock and follows the contours of the rock surface. It collects and funnels rainwater to a storage dam. The wall and dam were constructed in December 1928 by the Public Works Department for the colonist settlers of East Karlgarin District. Both were renovated in 1951 to increase water capacity for the Hyden township.
    Such walls are common on many similar rocks in the Wheatbelt. The flared slopes are argued to have formed by the concentrated chemical weathering around the base of an inselberg by groundwater.

    Hippo's Yawn

    Just 650 metres further on from Wave Rock is Hippo's Yawn. When you see this rock formation, you will see the resemblance to a yawning hippopotamus, which led to its name.

    Just besides Hippo's Yawn are also a set of rocks resembling butt cheeks.Read more

    Rabbit Proof Fence

    Originally rabbit- proof fences were introduced into Western Australia to deal with the problem of over-population of rabbits destroying crops and degrading pastureland. Rabbits were first introduced into Australia by the First Fleet when they arrived in Botany Bay in 1788, how idiotic is that?
     
    By 1896 it had been found as far west as Eucla and 200 kilometres further west at Twilight Cove, near Esperance. The fence represents a unique, if inadequate, response to an overwhelming environmental problem.

    Construction of the Number 1 Rabbit Proof Fence began in 1901. It stretched 1834 kilometres from the south coast to the northwest coast, along a line north of Burracoppon, 230 kilometres east of Perth.

    Unfortunately, by 1902 rabbits had already been found west of the fence line, because they were breeding like f****n’ rabbits! The Number 2 Rabbit Proof Fence was built in 1905 to stem their advance.
    Stretching 1166 kilometres from Point Ann on the south coast through Cunderdin, 150 kilometres east of Perth, the new fence joined the original fence line at Gum Creek in the Murchison area.

    Hidden Hollow

    Situated approximately 30kms east of Narembeen, along the Pathway to Wave Rock is Hidden Hollow, formally known as Mt Walker Rock.

    This granite outcrop also boasts a natural amphitheatre that has been carved out of the rock over years of weathering.
    The surrounding farms collected water from the rock to clean hessian bags at its base for grain.

    Fence Of Footwear

    It’s certainly not what you expect to see when driving through the back roads of the eastern Wheatbelt in WA.
     
    But stretching over more than a kilometre on the road between Narembeen and Mt Walker is a fence full of boots and shoes — more than 1000 of them, go figure! Looks like littering on a kick-arse scale!
     
    WA’s “boot mile” is solely for fun. The original idea is that when a comrade passes away, a cowboy may hang a boot on a fence post as a memorial.
    The boots have worn out and represent hard work. A cowboy is the original criminal gang member, did you know that?

    Golden Pipe Line

    The Goldfields Water Supply Scheme is an historically significant and economically invaluable water supply as well as an engineering marvel.
    The pipeline and dam project delivers potable water from Mundaring Weir in Perth to communities in Western Australia's Eastern Goldfields, particularly Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie at a distance of 569km!

    The project was commissioned in 1896 and completed in 1903.
    The pipeline continues to operate today, supplying water to over 100,000 people in over 33,000 households as well as mines, farms and other enterprises.

    During the early 1890s, thousands of settlers had travelled into the barren and dry desert centre of Western Australia seeking gold, but the existing infrastructure for the supply of water was non-existent, and an urgent need arose.

    Prior to the scheme, water condensers, irregular rain, and water trains were part of the range of sources.
    Railway dams were essential for water to supply locomotives to travel to the goldfields.

    Throughout the 1890s, water availability issues in Coolgardie and in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region were causing concern.
    On 16 July 1896, the Premier of Western Australia, Sir John Forrest introduced to Western Australian Parliament a bill to authorise the raising of a loan of £2.5 million to construct the scheme: the pipeline would convey 23,000 kilolitres of water per day to the Goldfields from a dam on the Helena River near Mundaring in Perth. Engineer CY O’Connor was the engineer who over saw the scheme.

    Kalgoorlie Super Pit

    Unbelievable to see, this super pit is amazing and just damn huge! Fascinating watching the massive haul trucks winding their way up and down the haul roads. Like watching ants in action. The lookout is informative and provides terrific views of the super pit. Worth a visit.

    Coolgardie is a small town in Western Australia, 558 kilometres east of the state capital, Perth. It has a population of approximately 850 people. Although Coolgardie is now known to most Western Australians as a tourist town and a mining ghost town, it was once the third largest town in Western Australia.Read more

    Lake Cowan - Norseman

    Lake Cowan, a hidden gem on the outskirts of Norseman, sits as a natural wonder. Unlike other lakes, swimming is not possible here. Lake Cowan is a glistening salt lake; meaning the water sits beneath the surface.

    The lookout offers panoramic views, reflecting the skyline on its surface.
    This location offers the perfect photo opportunity to capture the kind of sunsets you only see in the country. Bask in the vibrant hues of the sky in this peaceful, natural spectacle.

    You'll find this unique stop along Mort Harslett Drive, approximately 7 km from Norseman. Visitors are warned to not drive on the salt lake due to the high risk of becoming bogged.

After leaving Norseman, we stopped for fuel in Balladonia; this out-of-the-way roadhouse has a motel, campground, and a quaint little museum with lots of information about the history of the Nullarbor and the surrounding areas.Read more

    Nullarbor Crossing

    The Nullarbor Plain stretches between Norseman in Western Australia and Ceduna in South Australia.
    At its widest point, it's about 1,200 kilometres.
    This great treeless plain includes the amazing sea cliffs of the Great Australian Bight accessible by a short detour from the highway.

    The Nullarbor Plain is part of the area of flat, almost treeless, arid or semi-arid country of southern Australia, located on the Great Australian Bight coast with the Great Victoria Desert to its north.

    It is the world's largest single exposure of limestone bedrock, and occupies an area of about 200,000 square kilometres
    At its widest point, it stretches about 1,200 kilometres from east to west across the border between South Australia and Western Australia.    Read more

    Nullarbor Roadhouse

    After many hours of travelling on day two across the plain, we stopped at the Nullarbor Roadhouse.
    We had a lovely stay; the staff were friendly and very helpful.
    We also enjoyed a meal and a cold alcoholic beverage at the Roadhouse's small restaurant.
    Would definitely stop here again if we were ever to travel through the Nullarbor again.    Read more

    Cap Lavoisier is located near Smoky Bay in South Australia.
    It is not spectacular and there is very little written about it or the history of the area.
    Its crystal clear waters and stark bare countryside offers pleasing panoramas of the coast.    Read more

    Cape Bauer Lookout - South Australia

    Located near Streaky Bay in South Australia is Cape Bauer lookout which marks the northern end of Corvisart Bay.
    A high limestone headland,it recedes east to the sheltered waters of Point Gibson and south to the ocean beaches
    of Corvisart Bay.
    Cape Bauer scenic drive offers magnificent views of an exposed coastline including the Razorbacks, the Blowholes and Hally's Beach.

    The scenery along this section of the Great Australian Bight is rugged and spectacular.
    This was worth the drive out, and there was bugger all wind to upset the drone for a change!    Read more

    Whistling Rocks & Blowholes - SA

    The Whistling Rocks were a must-see for us, and they are located at Streaky Bay on the far western side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia.

    The scenery along this section of the Great Australian Bight is rugged and spectacular and more so when the drone is taking our pictures!

    The Whistling Rocks and the Blowholes attractions are best visited when there is a high tide and strong offshore wind, this allows the best whistling and blowing, our day was perfect for the drone with the wind minimal, however it was still quite bloody amazing.    Read more

    Point Labatt - South Australia

    Point Labatt is a headland located on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula in the Australian state of South Australia about 39 kilometres east of Streaky Bay.
    It is notable as one of the largest Australian mainland breeding sites for Australian sea lions.

    Found in no other country in the world, the Australian sea lion is one of Australia’s most endangered marine mammals and rarest seals.
    Point Labatt is the only place on the mainland where Australian seal pups can be seen learning to swim, play and rest on the beach.

    It is also one of the few places in and around Australia where they are protected from land predators, and which provides a safe environment for the sea lion pups to develop.    Read more
