  • Casino

    20 Juni 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Casino will serve as our home base for the next four days while we visit a few old work colleagues.

The caravan park where we are staying is quite nice. There are lots of pretty rainbow lorikeets about. We have our own private ensuite, with a storage room for the bicycles and our own personal clothesline.

What more could you ask for?

  • Canungra

    24 Juni 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

This morning, we said goodbye to Casino as we headed to our next destination, Canungra. As this was not a long drive, we decided to take the scenic route along Summerland Way and the Mount Lindsey Highway. We stopped near Collins Gap on the New South Wales and Queensland border for breakfast and some drone footage courtesy of Phil before reaching our destination. Canungra will be our home for the next week while we catch up with former work colleagues, neighbours, and friendsBaca selengkapnya

  • Beachmont

    26 Juni 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Today was a drive down memory lane. There are several great roads for motorbike riding on the Gold Coast, and one of our favourites was Beechmont. We stopped to get drone footage courtesy of Phil, then went to Rosin Lookout for photographs of Numinbah Valley with Mount Warning in the distance. Then we drove to Hinze Dam, had a look around our old neighbourhood, and then went back to Canungra Campground. It was a pleasant day.Baca selengkapnya

  • Memory Lane

    29 Juni 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today was another drive down memory lane, another of our favourite motorbike rides. This time we went to Wyaralong Dam, through  Kalbar, stopped at Aratula for lunch, then on to Spicers Gap, then to Lake Moogerah.

It started out to be a cracker of a day, then turned dull after Wyaralong Dam, but it was still a pleasant day.

  • Wyalong Dam

    29 Juni 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Wyalong Dam is a beautiful and calming place with fantastic facilities. It has multipurpose tracks and a huge range of wildlife that have returned to the area. I even photographed a beautiful wedge-tailed eagle.

The dam itself is used for canoeing, fishing, and non-motorized craft and has an entire area devoted to mountain biking or horse riding trails.

It is perfect for lazing around and having a picnic, or you can just meander around the amazing sculpture garden and enjoy the mountain views.

Aerial photography and video supplied by Phil.

  • Spicers Gap

    29 Juni 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Spicers Gap is a mountain pass that is located 100 kilometres west of Brisbane, Queensland, and was the original route over the Great Dividing Range in the area around Brisbane.

At Spicer Gap, there is the Pioneer picnic area and amenities "compost toilet" block and Spicers Gap bush camping area (these campgrounds are not suitable for caravans or camper trailers). Just a couple of minutes drive up the road is a beautiful walk up to the Governor's Chair lookout, with amazing views and a perfect spot to watch the sunrise. If you're an avid bushwalker, it is a good starting point to hike to Mt Mathieson and continue on the heritage trail.

    A little bit of History

The first dray track across Spicer's Gap was built in 1847 by local squatters, forging a link between southern Darling Downs and Brisbane. The Spicer's Gap road is Queensland's best-known example of sophisticated 19th-century civil engineering.

In good weather, a bullock dray would take two days to cross the range. To carry six or more tonnes of baled wool over the range.

  • Lake Moogerah Dam

    29 Juni 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Lake Moogerah Dam is located amidst the spectacular scenery of the Scenic Rim, an hour's drive southwest of Brisbane. The dam is a popular location for fishing.

We have visited this place multiple times on our motorbike riding adventures. The lake and its surroundings are picturesque, and you get an amazing view of the mountain range to the west.

They have great facilities for fishing and all kinds of water sports and recreational activities. There is also a 3 km nature walk at the end of the dam wall.

Just over thirteen months later, we are almost back to where we started, Brooms Head. We will catch up with the rest of the family before we officially start our Aussie Adventure travels with Phil’s daughter, Belinda, and her partner, Kat.

We will be here for three days before we head off to Dicky Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

  • Yuraygir National Park

    3 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

This is our last day in Brooms Head before we head to Ocean View Caravan & Tourist Park. Originally, we were staying at Dicky Beach but had to change our plans due to unforeseen circumstances.

The day started slowly due to the miserable weather conditions (constant rain). First, we went and had lunch at the Snak Shak in Brooms Head. Then, we explored Yuraygir National Park. Unfortunately, most of the lookouts were closed due to the weather and landslides, but we did get to see the Red Cliffs.

That night, we went to dinner at Broom Head Bowls Club Chinese restaurant.

  • Sea Life Aquarium

    6 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

On this rainy day, we decided to check out Sea Life. I must admit I enjoyed it more here than I expected.

We had an amazing time at the aquarium! The animals were very active. The exhibits are colorful and full of underwater life. There is lots of sea life to explore, and the seal show was so cute!

It doesn’t really matter who you’re with; you will enjoy the moment you step inside the aquarium. It feels like you’re on another planet.

  • Ginger Factory

    6 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After the visiting the Sea life Aquarium, we went for lunch at the Buderim Ginger Factory.

The iconic Ginger Factory has something for everyone: a fully licensed Ginger Café, gelato, with tons of handmade gelato flavours made right at the factory.
There was rides available on the, Moreton, the 116-year-old sugar cane train.
We did the Ginger Factory tour in 2015 and the photos are from that time. We were accompanied with Tiger & Leila, and discovered things like the Live Bee Show with honey tastings, followed by a leisurely stroll around the tropical gardens.
Lots of souvenirs, handmade toys, sweet gingery treats, and a large range of scents and herbal products can be found in various shops.

  • Nutworks Macadamia Factory

    6 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Nutworks is just across the road from the Ginger Factory.

They have an amazing range of Macadamia nut products with different spice blends. There are different packaging options and weights for different flavours of nuts, probably depending on their popularity.

Free tasting is a bonus. If I could, I'd buy them all! Warning though, tasting the nuts does lead to parting with your money!

Further in, there's a chocolate production facility with many different flavours as well.
Unlike the Ginger Factory, you can view through a window into the factory to see how they make and process these wonderful macadamias.

  • Kondalilla Falls

    7 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Kondalilla National Park is in the Blackall Range of Southeast Queensland. In this beautiful national park, the waterfalls and rock pools are amazing, and there are multiple lookouts where you can take spectacular pictures and soak in the view.

The hiking trails vary in length and difficulty. The 4.6km complete circuit walk is challenging, as is the walk to the falls, and one of the rock pools is 1.5km away. The track can be a little tricky and has quite a few steps, but it is easily navigated.

We did the rock pool loop and walked another 400 meters to the observation deck of the falls. It was slightly damp but a perfect day for a winter walk.

  • Australia Zoo

    8 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

There is no other place like the Australia Zoo. Huge, at 750 acres! We have visited before. It's a well-thought-out park. The zoo itself is a beautifully maintained, immaculate place. Every single animal enclosure we visited was so beautiful and clean, with a wide variety of animals and plenty of interactive exhibits.

The entire complex is very modern, with its beautiful botanical garden and bird sanctuary as well.

The highlight of our day was the 1:15 PM show at the Crocoseum. The show was incredibly entertaining and educational, featuring amazing wildlife displays and an awe-inspiring crocodile feeding demonstration.

We took a sneak peek at the animal hospital and were in awe of the rescue work that is done there! Many wonderful memories were made today!

  • Obi Obi Boardwalk

    9 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Today started slowly. Finally, the rain stopped this afternoon, and we headed to Obi Obi Boardwalk, Maleny. There have been sightings of a platypus in the area, but I am not getting my hopes up of seeing it.

As we were walking along the boardwalk, lo and behold, Kat spotted one! To our excitement, we raced over to see it. I managed to get a picture and a little video. Even though they are a little blurry, you can still see it.

After our walk, we headed to Mary Cairncross Lookout for afternoon tea and photos of the Glass House Mountains.

  • Hervey Bay

    13 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Went for a drive to Hervey Bay today. Hervey Bay is a string of beachside towns located in Southeast Queensland, widely known as the site for observing humpback whales.

Unfortunately, this beautiful coastal town has lost its charm due to overdevelopment and overcrowding with tourists.

On the way back to the caravan park, we stopped at Toogoom and Burrum Heads.

Excellent for a morning or afternoon stroll, it is worth taking the time to stop and enjoy this tranquil garden.

The mystery craters were fascinating and certainly sparked our curiosity. This interesting geological anomaly has many theories about how it was created, one being that it is man-made concrete.

After seeing the craters, we watched a short, informative video clip about the history of Mystery Craters.

  • Boolboonda Tunnel

    14 Juli 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    A wonderful bit of history.

Boolboonda Tunnel is an abandoned heritage-listed railway tunnel built from 1881 to 1884. It took two years to dig and was officially opened on 2 November 1883. The tunnel is 192 metres (630 ft) in length and is the longest unsupported man-made tunnel in Queensland.

The railway tracks were removed, so the tunnel is now home to a colony of tiny Bentwing Bats. This remarkable tunnel is an amazing engineering feat when you think that this was all done with hard physical labour.

Unfortunately, due to a neighbour of Jim's who complained about the so-called traffic, the Council has ordered this iconic attraction to be dismantled. With the locals' support, I'm sure Jim will keep fighting this decision.
