    Day 1 - Vegas Strip

    24. marraskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

We have celebrated Thanksgiving with our Chatt Fam in Chattanooga for longer than the boys have been alive, so when we realized those festivities weren't going to happen this year, we started thinking about alternate plans. Of course Nate wanted to go climbing, but I was skeptical of weather so we didn't commit to anything and decided to wait and see. Then, about a week ago I saw something on Instagram about Las Vegas, which led me to check flight prices and holy smokes, there were some cheap flights!

Within about 2 hours we had a trip planned -- fly into Vegas, see the strip, hit some crags, drive to Sedona to have Thanksgiving with friends then swing by the Grand Canyon on the way back to catch our flight home.

Our flight out of Chattanooga was late Sunday night so we got into Vegas around midnight local time. We were all amused that it felt like we were landing literally right next to the Strip. On one side we saw planes, the other a skyline of neon. From the airport, we stumbled to our hotel and conked out.

The next morning, we all woke up far too early, but after some coffee and syrup-laden hotel waffles, we made our way to check out the Las Vegas Strip. Nate has visited Vegas once before so had a smidgeon of insight on where to go. The boys were amused at how crazy some of the buildings are (The Excalibur, NY NY). We stopped at some shops, walked a ton and got lost in so many casinos. By lunchtime we were all fading. Fortunately we wound up at a restaurant with relatively slow service, which worked to our benefit so we could all rest and refuel.

Buzzing with our second wind, we made our way to Twilight Zone Mini Golf and had a blast. The boys never pass up a chance for mini golf and this place was a lot of fun. We wrapped that up just in time to make it to the one show we had purchased tickets for -- Paranormal Mind Reading. The boys love a good magic or mentalist show and this one had great reviews. It did not disappoint. It was in a small theater and both the boys managed to get onto the stage with the mentalist, Frederic da Silva. Holden helped with a card trick and Everett was pseudo hypnotized or something wild! The mentalist had E throwing his arms in the air when E thought da Silva was touching his shoulder but da Silva was nowhere near him. It was nuts and a lot of fun.

After that show we caught a few minutes of the fountain show at the Bellagio then headed back to the hotel. It was only 630p, but after our short night, 3 hour time change, and 20,000 steps we were ready to chill. We grabbed some take out and watched Harry Potter then fell asleep much too early for what anyone would admit to in Las Vegas.

Tomorrow: Climbing at Red Rocks and driving to Sedona.

  • Day 2 - Red Rocks to Sedona

    25. marraskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Day two brought us to a more expected locale: a crag. As soon as I floated the idea of Vegas & Sedona, Nate immediately began planning for Red Rocks Canyon. According to one of our books, it's one of the must-climb destinations. It did not disappoint.

The hike in was much more of a meandering scramble, very reminiscent of one of our very favorite hikes ever, the Fiery Furnace at Arches Nat'l Park. The rock formations are chonky and striated, with shades from crimson to cream, living up to its Red Rocks name. We all had a lot of fun simply trying to get to the main attraction.

The boys had a great time taking on a handful of routes. The weather was superb and even though it was crowded, the folks were all in good spirits. We could have stayed hours more, but Sedona was on our mind, so we packed up and hit the road around lunchtime.

On the way to Sedona we swung by Hoover Dam. I thought we would be walking out to an observation deck, when in fact it took us to a bridge right next to the Interstate. It was crowded, cars were screaming by us at 80mph and I was up way too high for any measure of comfort. We snapped some pics and got off that bridge as fast as possible and got back on the road.

Our drive to Sedona was uneventful and we made it in time for a late dinner with the Weltys! We're so fortunate to have such good friends in amazing destinations. We ate, caught up and made plans to reunite for more climbing on Wednesday. We arrived in the dark and could only vaguely make out shapes in the distance. It will be a treat to see what the sunlight reveals in the morning.

  • Day 3 - Sedona

    26. marraskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

While we arrived in the dark, our first full day in Sedona was all clear skies and perfect weather. First stop was knocking out some climbing at a spot called Stupa Crag at Chimney Rock. As we drove through Sedona to the crag, Everett was gobsmacked by his new surroundings, commenting, "I know Chattanooga is called the Scenic City, but that should be what they call this place." He wasn't wrong.

Kyle and his youngest, Wesley, joined us for the morning outing. Wes recently began bouldering and this was his first time climbing on ropes. He knocked it out of the park and seemed to really enjoy the opportunity to get onto the ropes and up high.

After the guys knocked out some routes, we grabbed Domino's and ate lunch at a local park. Kyle brought his bocce ball set and Holden schooled all of us with his newly discovered bocce ball skills. We decided that Sedona gifted Holden with his bocce ball prowess after he got knocked on the head from a loose rock while climbing earlier. Three cheers for helmets!

After Holden destroyed us in bocce ball, we headed back to the Airbnb to rest and recoup for a bit. We ended the evening with dinner at Katie & Kyle's. Kyle took us on a tour of the school where Katie works (they live on the campus). The views everywhere are spectacular. We finished the evening talking with Katie & Kyle by the fire on their back patio while all the boys played video games.

  • Day 4 - Thanksgiving!

    27. marraskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Thanksgiving has always been with friends and always been in Chattanooga for 15+ years, so when everyone's plans changed this year, we thought maybe we'd be solo for Turkey Day. We even floated the idea of driving to Sedona to see the Weltys, but that would be 4 days of driving for 2 days in town. So we were pumped when the cheap flights appeared and could still have Thanksgiving with close friends, just in an entirely different locale.

Our Thanksgiving Day festivities started with an outing to nearby Raven Caves, only 10 minutes down the road. Holden had been keen to see a keyhole cave, which Sedona is famous for. Thankfully we found a small one close by and it was such a fun way to start the day. It was next to a creek lined with Aspen, golden in this late fall. We ventured through this very small cave system where I could always see some bits of light, which is the only kind of cave I want to crawl into.

After we finished exploring the caves, we swung by Bell Rock, a huge formation near the main road. Katie and Kyle said it was definitely worth checking out, so we were eager to scramble around and see what we could get into. We nearly bit off more than we could chew.

We all had fun climbing around the various ledges and worked ourselves up higher and higher, in part to get away from the crowds. At some point, we assumed we could find a way back down to the main trail on the back side of the rock, so we continued scurrying our way up, over and through places where it seemed not many had ventured. We followed a few promising paths down very sketchy slabs & ravines that all turned out to just get us further away from any sensible route.

We were very truly in a place that seemed really not great. Nate again ventured out further to investigate while I made the boys drink some water in the shade. I was very glad we had enough sense to bring a bag with the two most important supplies: water & Nerds Gummy Clusters. At this point Holden was starting to get anxious about our predicament. I told him, "It's gonna be fine. Worse case scenario, we have to call 911 and they send a helicopter to get us off of this thing." To which he responded, "THAT'S THE VERY BEST CASE SCENARIO!!"

After Nate's last recon mission failed to find a safe way forward, we begrudgingly turned around and made our way back to the sketchy ravines and crumbling pathways. Needless to say, we were all relieved when we finally arrived back on safer ground. Shout-out to our level-headed boys and the makers of Nerds Gummy Clusters for getting us back safely.

After that prolonged adventure, we made it back to our Airbnb for a quick rest and shower, then headed to the Weltys for Thanksgiving lunch. While the adventures and new scenery were fantastic, getting to spend time with these friends in their new home really was the highlight of the trip. We all ate too much turkey and all the favorite sides.

Before we sliced up the pies, Kyle and his boys took us up to Cow Pie Hill so we could watch the sunset light up Cathedral and Seven Warriors monuments. Golden hour really is something else in these parts.

We made our way back down, ate too much pie and spent more time outside by the fire with Kyle and Katie while the boys all played more video games. Everyone was very content.

Eventually we said our goodbyes and traded hugs then made our way back to the Airbnb for our last sleep before heading out.

  • Day 5 - Grand Canyon to Vegas

    28. marraskuuta, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 39 °F

We dragged ourselves out of bed for our last day of adventuring before flying home tomorrow. We have gone hard the last few days and a rest day would be really nice, but alas, we hate crowds and really hate waiting in line, so that alarm went off earlier than we prefer. The Grand Canyon waits for no one.

We took Kyle's last suggestion to drive through Oak Creek Canyon on our way up to Flagstaff. It was such a pretty drive. Nate and I were both so surprised by how much color there was in the autumn foliage. If this trip has taught me anything, it's how very little I knew of northern Arizona. The Coconino Forest around Sedona is so lush in ways that I never expected.

Once out of the canyon we finally caught views of Flagstaff in the daylight and were shocked by the snowcapped mountains north of the city. I truly had no idea there were mountains like that in Arizona. We continued north into the territory of the Navajo Nation. All we could see of the area was from the main road, but the poverty was evident and a reminder of centuries of mistreatment of the native people.

We rolled into Grand Canyon National Park around and were delighted that there was no line to get in. Our first stop was at the eastern watch tower. The wind was so cold so we didn't stay too long in this spot, but did swing by a small deli to get lunch and some knick knacks.

Fully fueled and warmed back up, we started back down the main road and pulled into a number of viewpoints. It was impressive to see how the river has carved out the land, but also felt somewhat removed from the most impactful features. Compared to Canyonlands and Black Canyon of the Gunnison, we were much further away from the more dramatic drops and turns. Perhaps if we had more time to actually hike into the canyon it might feel different, but Nate and I both felt surprisingly underwhelmed.

One thing that did surprise me the most about driving through the park was that the surrounding eastern and southern edges of the plateau is one big forest. I thought it was just a big desert around the canyon.

Our last stop was an impromptu hike out to Shoshone Point. We were tired of the crowds and figured we could find a few less folks if we walked a ways. We hiked about a mile through the forest before reaching the canyon. The views were definitely worth the extra effort. And in an uncharacteristic turn of heights-related bravery, I even ventured out onto an out-cropped ledge to take in the view.

Meanwhile, Holden was feeling the drag of the last few days and decided to hang out in the picnic area while the rest of us wandered and investigated what we could find.

Time was not on our side during this quick Grand Canyon visit. I certainly never imagined our first visit to the Grand Canyon would simply be a quick stop on our way to catch a flight, but sometimes you gotta take what you can take. If we come back again, we will definitely make plans to hike and explore further into the canyon. It truly is remarkable, even if it was different than we expected.

The rest of our drive back to Vegas went smoothly. Nate and I were both continually surprised by how many smaller mountain ranges filled the landscape. At dinner we all talked about our favorite parts of the trip:

    -- Holden: Thanksgiving Dinner
    -- Everett: The magic show!
    -- Nate:
-- Amy: hiking around Sedona, friends and learning I knew nothing about Arizona

We made it back to the hotel and conked out very early before getting up for our 330a wake up call to catch our flight home.

This trip has been full of so many unexpected surprises. Exploring with this little family of ours is really a special thing and we loved getting to see friends in the new place they call home. I think it's safe to say that this will not be our last trek to this part of the world.
