• Evening at NM Hut

    June 12 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

In the evening, we contemplated the route for the next day. The original idea was to go via the Great Solstein mountain, perhaps along its side rather than going over the top. However, even though it was not actually that far in kilometers, it would involve a lot of climbing and we looked at the closely-spaced contour lines with new eyes in the light of where we had walked today. That was going to be much steeper. The alternative was to take a more direct route, which we had initially discounted because it had a 'chimney' to climb. That struck me as exceptionally scary. However, after much googling and even a little eavesdropping on the conversation of a Dutch group on the other side of the room, we decided to give it a go.
Our room for the night was with the famous large shelf instead of a bed. A row of mattresses was placed on the shelf and everyone sleeps next to each other. In this case, it was only three beds and in fact we had the room to oursleves, so that was fine. It was incredibly hot in the communal room, so we retired to our own room straight after eating. In bed by 9:30, lights out at 10:05.
