    Quick update

    Mc current trip through Brazil starts off in São Paulo, where I'm visiting my friend Felipe. We were studying our master's degree together, but he already got back to work in his home country.
    As the picture shows, the weather didn't look very promising in the morning, but despite rain and thunderstorm forecasts, it turned out to be mostly sunny.Read more

    Sampa streets

    Well, actually the pictures don't really show São Paulo (Sampa)'s streets, which is partly because I didn't really feel like pulling out my camera in the crowded city center, and partly because the parks make for much prettier fotos.
    I started of at Parque Ibirapuera, a huge park that's in comfortable walking distance from Felipe's place. Fitness is a big issue here: although it was a weekday and late morning, the park was full of people doing different kinds of exercise. I also visited Museu Afro Brasil, an exhibition about slaves in Brazil.
    When I had finally found out which bus to take, I went to the city center. In between Praça da Sé and Praça da República I allowed myself to get lost in the crowd. As expected, São Paulo isn't exactly pretty, it is rather something like the true face of everyday life.    Read more

    Lost in Praça da Luz

    As today is Saturday and hence Felipe doesn't have to work, we got to explore a little more of São Paulo together. It was just as interesting for him as for me, since he had only moved here three weeks ago and hadn't seen anything but the area he lives and works in so far.
    Due to the heat, we decided to start with a museum and be outside only in the late afternoon. We chose Museu da Língua Portuguesa (Museum of the Portuguese language) close to Praça da Luz. When arriving there, we didn't see the museum right away, so we first took a little walk through the train station and the park. We found the museum, but weren't sure where to get in. By the people we asked for the entrance, we were guided in opposite directions, making us walk back and forth until one of them have us the information that, after a fire in 2015, the museum was going to be under construction until 2020. We then wanted to just walk somemore, but realized that the area wasn't exactly the best.
    Instead, we took a cab to Liberdade, a neighborhood that is home to the greatest number of Japanese immigrants in Brazil. It was dirty and chaotic, but also impressive for its dense Japanese culture and bustling life.
    Of course I also got to know some of Sampas nightlife, on a (rather famous) party called Rocka Rocka. Though I liked the music, it would have been more fun if more people had been dancing. But most Brazilians seemed busy looking for a hookup, and I got to observe the extremely direct way of flirting here. Though I have been to many Latin American countries, this is definitely the one that gives the greatest importance to these things.    Read more

    Iguaçú (BR)

    A 17-hour Bus ride later I got to Foz do Iguaçu, in order to see the Brazilian side of the waterfalls. They can't be put into words, and also the fotos are not getting close to reality. Even Niagara Falls are a joke compared to the kilometres of waterfalls in Iguaçú.
    It is said that the Argentinean side is even more beautiful, but I have no idea how that could be possible. We'll see about that tomorrow...    Read more

    Parque das aves

    I really liked the group that I had been hanging out with for the last few days in Foz do Iguaçu. Only that could convince me to face my fear of big birds and join them at the bird park. As expected it was not for me: not only did they get much to close, but the entire park also was full of an unpleasant smell...Read more

    For dinner, I met with Felipe's cousin, who took me to churrascaria Rafain, a restaurant that serves buffet with churrasco (barbeque) and at the same time has a show presenting several dances from different Latin American countries.Read more

    Up the cobblestone hills

    It took me one bus, two planes and a shuttle to get to the colonial town of Ouro Preto, but ur was worth every second. It is just exactly the kind of town I like: small with cute houses, hills, cobblestoned alleys, a lot of culture and great restaurants.
    Together with Nicolás, an Argentinean from the hostel, I added various kilometers and god knows how many churches to the count. My hiking shoes do serve me well here.    Read more

    Semana Santa celebrations

    If you have looked at the map of this trip, you might be wondering why I took the long trip to Ouro Preto, which definitely is not just "on the way". The answer is: because of the holy week. Leaving alone that I didn't want to spend Easter on an overcrowded beach full of drunk and a little intrusive Brazilian machos (just my very prejudicial expectation), I had also read that Ouro Preto was the best place in Brazil this time of the year.
    The official Semana Santa agenda, though not even close to including everything that is going on, includes numbers of processions, services, liturgies, orchestrations and other Easter traditions.    Read more

    BH Culture

    I'm now in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais. I already got here yesterday afternoon and took advantage of the fact that there are two climbing gyms in close walking distance. After showering I didn't even have time to sit done, but went with a little group to a bar that features rock music and billard.
    Today I got out to learn something about the mineiro culture. I walked a lot in between two museums and the central market. Although of course not everything in BH is pretty, I am still surprised that so few people visit it, because there is a lot to do here (much more than for example in São Paulo).    Read more

    Forró

    What Salsa is to Colombians, that is Forró to the Brazilians. Tonight I got to know and try this beautiful dance at the bar A Autentica. I took my time with the first dance, as most people at the party were really good dancers and I knew I would be sticking out. In addition, many couples (and by couple I refer to mostly one-song dancing couples) danced much closer than I would feel comfortable with a stranger.
    Already watching the others was fascinating. This dance has an incredible beauty (and in some cases also a lot of emotion) to it. Very slowly I also started accepting dance offers, however telling them that I had no Forró experience and preferred to keep at least some of my personal space. Since (almost) everyone accepted that and it also became clear that they really wouldn't try anything but dancing, I could relax and just enjoy the dance. It is definitely a lot of fun and a big part of Brazilian culture :)    Read more

    BH's Culinary Highlights

    Today I met with João, a friend that I know from my exchange year and that I'd also traveled two days with oh Colombia. We went to a cultural center and to a viewpoint - unfortunately at that moment it started to rain, but we still got a nice picture of BH from above.     Rio de Janeiro

    I didn't expect to say this, but after only a few hours in Rio I can honestly say that I understand why people are so fascinated by this city. If you tell any Brazilian that you're planning a trip to Rio, the first thing they'll say is: "Make sure to be extremely careful. Go with a local if you can. Rio is very dangerous."
    Right after that, however, they'll tell you that they love Rio, and that it still is a 100% worth going. You'll hear about the beauty of the town and people, about how you should try and hide all your valuables or just not bring them at all, about great beaches, restaurants and party, about the imprisonment of the former president, about the abundance of hiking opportunities, about wars in the favelas and homicide. You'll end up wondering if you should maybe change your travel plans in order to avoid Rio, and at the same time wanting to see this place even more.
    I am lucky enough to have friends here who would take good care of me, so I decided to go. And I don't regret it: when you lie at Leblon beach, looking at the islands and mountains, you easily forget that there's a chaotic town right behind you.    Read more

    A little bit of Rio tourism

    My first day in Brazil's most famous city had been very quite: after spent the night on the road and due to the fact that Felipe only arrived in the evening and his mother, with whom we are staying, wouldn't let me do much by myself, I only slept and went to the beach.
    On the contrary, today was loaded with activity. We tried to go up to Cristo Redentor, but since the sky was rather cloudy and we wouldn't have seen a lot from up there, we decided otherwise. Instead we walked around the botanical garden and had lunch at a famous (and really good) restaurant in Santa Teresa, called Aprazível. After that, we explored this bohemian neighborhood and some of its viewpoints. For the ultimate sunset experience we climbed onto some rocks at Praia do Arpoador, at the end of Ipanema. We also met with Jéssica, a friend from my exchange year in Mexico.
    We only had time for a quick shower and dinner with Felipe's mum before we had to leave for a birthday party (at this point a already 3h too late).    Read more

    Paraty

    Paraty is a small coastal town in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Especially now, considering that it's off season, there's not that much to do.
    My day consisted of a breakfast right at the beach, followed by a stroll through the historic center in town and some chilling at the beach. I didn't go into the water - it didn't look too inviting in terms of cleanliness - but there was a stone pier on which I went a little father out. In the evening, a band played pagode in the town square, and a lot of people started to dance Samba.Read more

    Surprise hike

    I only arrived at Ilha Grande this afternoon and went straight to Praia Preta, a beach I had been recommended in the hostel. When it turned colder and I considered going back, I remembered that there was supposed to be a waterfall close by. I was only wearing flip flops, my bikini and a beach towel, but I didn't expect to be walking more than ten minutes.
    Eventually, however, those ten minutes turned into one hour on a rather difficult trail. I usually would have turned around after a short time, but it took a while to get reliable information on how long it would actually take and joined a group of Brazilians.
    My feet are killing me right now - I appreciate having bought proper hiking shoes now more than ever - but it was still a unique experience.    Read more

    One last hour at the beach

    My boat back to the mainland was scheduled for 1 p.m., which gave me enough time to chill at Praia Julia, one of the breaches that are in walking distance from the village of Vila Abraão.
    Although I would have loved to have some more hours on Ilha Grande and maybe visit the famous Lopes Mendes beach, I was glad I planned in some buffer time: the boat left half an hour late (but I'm almost sure that they just tell everyone the wrong time to make sure they'd be punctual). On the other side we were picked up by a van that, halfway to Rio, broke a tyre. An hour later we could continue driving, but the break for that changed tyre didn't work anymore, so that we went on very limited speed. When we finally got close to the airport, we got stuck in traffic until we changed into another van - 5 minutes before arrival. At least my 5h expected waiting time at the airport was that way reduced to only 3h 😁Read more
