    Day 261: Panama City

    October 1, 2016 in Panama ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

At 6 in the morning we woke up to get all our stuff and bikes to the airport. We were way to early so had to wait to check in. But when the check in counter finaly opend we were the first to be there. There was some confusion about the bikes and the total weight that we were alowed. But after half an hour of negotiations we got ourselfa and all our stuff checked in with only 20 euro's for oversized luggage. Sounds like a good deal to us!

We were flying in a small fokker 100. A dutch plane build for dutch people. A lot of legroom and a really comfortable flight. After assuring the Doane guys that the bikes were not new. (A quick peek in the box cleared that up prety quickly). We even found a relatively cheap taxi (20 dollars) wich fits our bikes. And before we knew it we were at the hostel. Really tired. The next 7 days we will chill out and explore Panama City. After that it is time to go home!

    Day 260: Let's get a flight!

    September 30, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Because taxi's with a bike are really expensive we decided to ride to a hostel next to the airport. Medellin is beautifully situated in a valley. So if you want to get out you have to climb. and it was a tought climb. With our bikeboxes folded on the back of our bikes and our baggs in total chaos the bike handled like a freight train. But we managed to get to the airport. So now we are boxing the bike and getting ready for our flight to Panama tomorow.Read more

Day 254: That's it, cycled South America

    September 24, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

The last cyclingday of our trip in south America. There was only 80 kmand a big climb between us and our final destination Medellín. We decided to start cycling at 7 to avoid some of the heat and traffic. But it was already hot. The many road construction made that we had to wait a lot of times. Luckely we could bypass some on our bike. The climb was not to steep and steady. But 6 km before the top Nino got a flat tire. So after a quick patch we made it to the top.

Being at the top it was only 40 more km downhill to Medellín. So we thought a pleasant warm downhill. But South America wasn't done with us yet. We got the craziest rainstorm we've had so far. So it turned out to be a cold and wet downhill. But soon we found ourselfs on the main road trough Medellín. We survived the 4 lane highway and found our hostel. We did it! Now we need some rest.

We planed on doing only 60 km today. But we ended up doing 110. There is only one climb and 80 km between us and Medellin now. So if everything goes acording to plan we will be in Medellin tomorow. But first we need a good nights sleep.Read more

    Day 252: Sore

    September 22, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Our walk yesterday was a bit longer than expected. we ended up walking 19 km. And since we are not used to walking anymore. Our leggs were complaining. so with super sore legs we started the last part of our trip. And even though the legs hurt and there was a lot of climbing we made our goal easily at 2 pm. So we got a cheap hotel. It's only 190km more to Medellin!Read more

Day 250: Let's get some coffee

    September 20, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After 2 days of rest in Armenia it was time to set out again. One of the only highlights in the surroundings is the town of Salento with the Cocora valey. so a short 22 km ride brought us to this small coffee town. here we will spend a day hiking in the valley before we set out for the last four days of cycling to Medellin.Read more

Day 247: Last time above 3000m.

    September 17, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

To get ahead of the heat we decided to leave town at 6am. Although quite early we were happy that we did it. It was still cool and traffic wasnt to bad. But two hours later it was sweating again and crazy traffic. It took us till 2 to make the 58km to the top of the pass. So we thought we would be in Armenia early.

A couple of hundred meters i got a flat tire. It turned out one of the patches was completely ripped a part. So after changing the tube we continued downhill. Only to have ninos tire flat at the bottom. Another ripped patch. So we hope with 2 brandnew tubes in our tires to make it to medellín.

    Day 246: Vamos Nairo!

    September 16, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

33 degrees. Thats what it said when we started in the morning. And during the day it ony became warmer. We started to climb bathing in sweat. But the road climbed slowely and steadily. So it wasn't to hard. Soon we made it to the town. And that's were the fun started.

Cars started honking and people cheering. Vamos Nairo! Is the most heared sentence. Refering to the Colombian star professional cyclist Nairo Quintana. We had motors and cars driving up to us and asking where we were going. After hearing Medellín they said we were crazy. After telling were we started people just became speechless. It was a nice distraction of the shitty bussy road and before we knew it we made it to the center and found a cheap hotel. Tomorow we will have to climb again.

Day 245: Last day on the flats.

    September 15, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

The mountains on our left kept getting bigger and bigger. Tomorow we will have to start climbing again. But not today, today is flat.

It was dry in the morning so we decided to set out early to make it to the next town before it became really hot. It's the last day in the semi flat valley. so we enjoy the easy kilometers. We can clearly notice that trafic gets heavier the closer we get to Bogota. Not much happend on the road, so we made it to espinal before 13:00. We will spare the leggs for tomorow. when we will climb the first part of our crossing of the Cordillera Central.Read more

Day 244: floating down the road.

    September 14, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We woke up to a giant thunderstorm. Water came down like crazy and the streets soon turned into rivers. But we are Dutch and used to a bit of rain. So we set out trying to avoid the worst flooded streets. Most of the cars don't really care about cyclist. So quite often we got splashed by the cars.

We rode the whole day in the rain. But actually we preferred the rain over the 36 degrees and sunny. We made some good progress until nino got our 17th flat tire. Turned out his outer tire was totally worn. So aftet 9950 km we finally destroyed our first tire. Luckily we carried a spare and got to a town with a cheap hospdaje at 4. Tomorrow will probably be the last "flat" day of the trip.
