  • Day is 107: Beaten by the wind gods.

    25. april 2016, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today we started our 6 day jump over the Andes. Yesterday the owner of the restaurant already tried to warn us that it is gona be windy. But being Dutch and stuborn we set out. But after 4.5 hours of pushing our bikes trough a sandstorm we decided this was crazy. Nowhere to put our tent so no choice to go back. So after a really hard day on the bike we made excactely no progress. Tomorow is gonna be windy again. But we will wake up early and try anyway. Wednesday the weather is gonna be better. So worst case we will have to try again. Wednesday.Læs mere

    28. april 2016, Argentina ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Today we set out with Brian an Nicolaas to try to get over the first top of Paso Sico. It was only -7 when we set out. But just after 12 we made it to the top. And at 4 we made it to the first town where we wanted to stay. Finding a place to stay took some time so when we were ready for dinner it was already really cold. Tomorow we hope te get further.Læs mere

  • Day 110: First time hitchhiking.

    28. april 2016, Argentina ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Waking up at 4050 m with -3 in the tent. Acording to the locals it was -15 outside. Bob got really sick during the night. We were unable to eat our oatmeal breakfast and had to make the hard decision. It was a terible idea to go further. Afyer the borderpost there is only no ones land. With only 1 car passing per day it was stupid to try to get further. So we said goodbye to Brian and Nicolaas and turned our bikes back. After a proximate 10 km the first car past and we asked for a ride. It bearly fitted but an hour later we were back in San Antonio. We quickly found our hostel and Bob got in bed and didn't leave it anymore.Læs mere

  • Day 116: let's take anotherone.

    4. maj 2016, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We decided to let Paso Sico be and concentrate on Paso Jama. So today we rode 100km north to the next big city. The road was fun a small road along the hills. It is probably the only kinda flat day in a while. Tomorow we will start to climb the Andes again. Paso Jama isn't gonna be easy. The forcast is a lot of wind again. Last week it was clossed due to wind and wet snow. But atleast it is gonna be pavement. Hopefully we can finaly leave argentina behind us one last time.Læs mere

  • Day 118: Hairpin bends.

    6. maj 2016, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

We were hoping to make 60 km today. But to our suprise there was a 4200 meter pass in between us our goal. We were expecting to climb only to 3600. We found Andre again the brother of Peter Sagan. Or at least that is what we tell him. We had some trouble finding water. But just before darkness we found water and a place to camp. Our stove didnt work. But out emergency alcohol stove provided us with warm water.Læs mere

  • Day 122: Everything frozen.

    10. maj 2016, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This morning we tried to get up early. But getting out of bed before the sun gets up with -10 isn't as easy as it may sound. All the waterbagd and bottles were frozen. We could melt just enough water for a cup of coffee. Getting on the bike without feeling in our fingers and toes and trying to make progress before the wind comes. But the wind was there already. And the 50k were hard to do. But we made it to the border. Time for a coffee at the gas station.Læs mere

  • Day 125: snowstorm

    13. maj 2016, Chile ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

3 days we had to wait for the pass to open. Snowstorms on the pass made it imposible to cross. But today at 9 in the morning they unexpectedly decided to open the pass. So we ate our breakfast and head out. The border crossing didnt go as planned. First we had to show our vehicle papers. When i tried to explain that my bike didn't have any she asked again for the papers. So 15 minutes later I was escorted to the bikes to register the details of the bike. The guy didn't understand that the real collor of my bike was cakipants and ninos was magic black. So it became cream and block. Then all our baggs got inspected in case we had any forbidden fruits or vegetables. This was oferseen by 3 douana guys. When this whole process was finished the told us 4 times that it was dificult and dangerous to climb the pass by bike. Like we didn't know..... But just before we left one guy came out and told us that the forecast for tomorow was more snow. That kinda scared us.so after 40 km of headwinds we decided to hitch a ride to San Pedro. Things just got to dangerous.Læs mere

  • Day 145: Into Bolivia

    2. juni 2016, Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today the four of us made it to Bolivia. We had to say goodbye to the asfalt. The next 340 km will be gravel, sand or salt. At the Bolivian inigration we got some coca leaves to chew on for the altitude. Although the taste isnt that good it kinda helps. Here there isnt really a road. So we got instantly lost in the diferent jeep tracks. But overall we had a hard but rewarding day. Now we will try to get some sleep at 4400 meters. Acording to the border guard it gets as low as -25 during the night. So it will be funLæs mere

  • Day 147: Andes strikes again

    4. juni 2016, Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today we tried to cross the highest point of our crossing of Bolivia. But the wind and climbing proves to much for our french team members. So after pushing our bikes for 5 hours we had to turn around and go back. After yet another disapointment in the high Andes we are kinda sick of being cold and tired. So 3 days behind schedule we are trying to get as fast as posible to Uyuni. There we will figure out a new plan for the rest of our trip.Læs mere

  • Day 148: Jeep acros the Andes

    5. juni 2016, Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After yesterday we were to tired to try it again. So we had to take a ride with a jeep. Four bikes on the roof and all the bags in the back. We asked the driver 20 times to take it easy but we flew over the road. But the bikes only lost some paint. We couldn't make it to the next shelter. So we set up the tent behind some building. Already 3 days behind schedule we try to maintain our composure. And are ready to start cycling again with only the two of us.Læs mere

  • Day 149: Sliding trough the sand.

    6. juni 2016, Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Maybe somebody could have told us that Bolivia in winter is windy. Today we were lucky and had the wind in the back. But still it wasn't easy to keep the bike under control. The sand made navigating over the road incredible dificult. But we made our goal of 25 km before lunch so decided to try to go further. But with the wind in front and making only 6km in 1.5 hour we decided to take shelter in an abondend building. Tomorow we hope to finaly see the first village in a week.Læs mere

  • Day 151: Some progress

    8. juni 2016, Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The goal for the day is cutting down as much as we can from the 51 km to the next town. But on the bike we noticed that something was missing. The huricane force wind was not there. The road was only partialy sandy so we made some good progress. During lunch we had already did 35 km. So we decided to make a run for the town. Now after 8 days on the road we need a day of rest before making a jump to Uyuni. We decided to make it directly and make a trip to the lake later.Læs mere

It was tough and it was hard. But the reward is that we will be in Uyuni early tomorow. The first real town in Bolivia. Some wifi to let the family know we are still alive. We found a building under construction to sleep in so we dont have to sleep outside in the cold.Læs mere

  • Day 157: Salar de Uyuni

    15. juni 2016, Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Today we make an overnight trip to Salar de Uyuni. Sleeping for a night on the biggest saltflat in the world has been on our list since ariving in South America. Finding a place to camp wasn't to dificult. All the places are the same. Luckely we brought a stone to get the peggs in the ground. But getting them out turned out to be more dificult.Læs mere
