Dos Camino

  • Anha to Viana do Castelo

    26 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

The next main town was fairly large, with a castle up on the hill. Luckily I did not visit it. The Camino was not well marked in Viana, but I figured out how to see my position on a Camino map app. That helped, so did the friendly business man on his way to work.

I stopped for coffee and to see the cathedral. Also I found the Umbrella Street ☂️. And if you were wondering, gas is even more expensive here. Keep in mind that is per litre in euros.

  • Correcos to Vila Praia de Ancora

    26 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

I had lunch in Correcos, then had quite a steep climb following. What’s usually at the top of a climb? Sometimes a beautiful view, sometimes just a cross. The crosses reminded me of the iron cross on the Camino Frances, but I didn’t leave a stone.

I was very happy to see a sign for my albergue, because I knew I was before the town. Well, the turnoff was. Then I had to climb some more to get there.

I think it was worth it, look at the cute beds in the attic!

  • Camino Portuguese Day 6

    27 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

A few scenes from the albergue and from where I ate yesterday evening. It was definitely a Mom and Pop restaurant, traditional Portuguese food. Up on a hill, with a great view for sunset nearby.

The fellow in the photo is the owner/waiter and his wife was busy in the kitchen. He was an interesting fellow, set the tables just so, and brought out pots of raw food to show what’s on the menu. He obviously takes pride in his restaurant. The food was delicious. The drink is champarriao, made with wine, beer, sugar and cinnamon. Very tasty.

The cat joined me after dinner.

  • Vila Praia de Ancora to Moledo

    27 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

It took me about 30 minutes to find the Camino route again, the albergue was that far away. Easy though, I just had to head towards the ocean. And once I found a church, I had found the Camino.

I had a great walk today, partly along the ocean on wide paved trails with separate bike lanes, partly on city roads/sidewalks, not too much cobblestone.

There were goats on the trail, right by the beach! I stopped in Moledo for café.

  • Moledo to Seixas

    27 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

From Moledo it was an easy walk to Caminha, which is a lovely town. The central plaza was a great place for lunch.

The route splits here. You can either cross the Minho River into Spain (by boat), or stay on the Portuguese side and follow the Rio Minho to Valenca. I am meeting my friend in Valenca, so I’m staying in Portugal for a couple more days.

In Caminha I also checked out the clock tower (Torre do Relogio), and the church.

After lunch and some gelato I crossed the bridge over the Rio Coura, and was soon in Seixas. At least this albergue is right on the route.

  • Camino Portuguese Day 7

    28 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

This is my last full day in Portugal. There is rain in the forecast so I will keep my poncho handy.

The mannequins were in the lobby of my albergue, very fashionable. I had a typical pilgrim meal, with too much food.

Villa Idalina is an interesting building, I guess you can rent it for events.

I got an early start but had to turn around and retrieve my poles, which I had forgotten. I didn’t get very far.

  • Seixas to Vila Nova de Cerveira

    28 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I had a few views of the Rio Minho today. The other side of the river is Spain. I will enter tomorrow across a bridge.

Part of my trail this morning was on the red paved trail, very nice to walk on. Then I came to some choices. Both of the river trails looked inviting, but neither were the Camino. They may have gone as far as the next town, but I wasn’t sure, so I followed the marked Camino path. That went uphill! I did have some nice views, but I had to climb for them.

Once in a while I came upon a sign with a good map. Otherwise the path was fairly well marked. And if I just stood there looking confused, someone usually pointed me in the right direction.

  • V N de Cerveira to Sao Pedro da Torre

    28 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

I had a happy snack about halfway through today’s walk. This is a nice town, some art and flowers.

The grapes were heavy on the vines in this one place. I tried some, very sweet!

This was the first time I have had rain since Santiago! Good thing my poncho was handy. And luckily most of the second half of my walk was on side streets and the industrial zone. Some of the trails I was on a few days ago would be treacherous in the rain.

I did not see a single pilgrim walking today! There must be some, but not on my schedule. So I had a very peaceful day.

  • Camino Portuguese Day 8

    29 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Another lovely albergue. This one is family run, with lots of love. Anna and Pedro were walking the Camino from there home in Lisbon when the property called to them. Basically in ruins, they began renovations just before Covid started, opening in spring of 2021. The first year was slow, but this summer they were quite busy.

There were not many guests last night, we had a wonderful pilgrim meal for 5 guests. I saw a few others this morning, but not a full house.

The rain woke me early, but it tapered off before I started to walk. Then it started again.

  • Valenca to Os Eidos

    29 september 2022, Portugal ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

I waited for Sharon in the Tourist Information Centre. She showed up right on schedule. From the Fortaleza it was a short walk to the International Bridge, where we crossed the border into Spain. Easiest border crossing ever.

Once in Tui, we had lunch before continuing on to our albergue. Now in Spain we are back to seeing horreos and Galician Camino markers. Also a couple of ancient bridges.

  • Camino Portuguese Day 9

    30 september 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Casa Alternativo gets top marks for great food, friendly host, and cute dog, Otto. A second bathroom would have been nice, but I’m not complaining.

We had rain on and off last night. Luckily our laundry came inside before the rain got serious, and were dry by morning. We started the day with a candlelight breakfast, and were walking before sunrise (which was 8:30 today).Läs mer

  • Os Eidos to Porriño

    30 september 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

It was very foggy this morning, and lots of moisture was in the air. And the temperature cooler today, with a high of 21 C.

Because our albergue was off the Camino, we had to find the way back to the marked path, which took a while.

Then we had a detour in Porriño because of construction. So we put in a few extra km today.

  • Porriño to Redondela

    30 september 2022, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After a coffee break we had a long climb. We are getting stronger, though 💪🎒.

The signpost indicates less than 100 km to Santiago, but we have an optional variation coming up, so it will be a bit further.

We stopped shortly after the peak to have lunch. Sharon and I shared the giant bocadillo. Then we got the steep descent.

  • Camino Portuguese Day 10

    1 oktober 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We had a quiet evening with laundry, dinner, and a short shopping trip (breakfast food).

The albergue had nice facilities and curtains on the bunks. I asked nicely and we both got bottom bunks.

We had our own breakfast, yogurt and banana, and were on our way at 8:30. The Camino is now very busy. Between all the routes converging and those pilgrims who start 100 km from Santiago, there were a lot of walkers. Plenty of bicigrenos as well.Läs mer

  • Redondela to Arcade

    1 oktober 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We had two good-sized hills today, one before coffee and the other after. There were some very nice views.

In Arcade we crossed a very old bridge, and saw some horreos.

  • Arcade to Pontevedra

    1 oktober 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We had our second hill after Arcade. This was mostly on soft paths through forests, so I enjoyed the climb a lot more.

We stopped at a roadside ‘tienda’ for a chocolate bar. It was well set up, with bales for seats, and a friendly dog.

Entering Pontevedra there is a Complimentario route, which goes along a small stream. It was a bit longer, but was in the shade. It is a very nice path.

Tonight we are living in luxury with a private room for two. With towels and sheets!

  • Camino Portuguese Day 11

    2 oktober 2022, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Last night we had no success finding an evening meal prior to the pilgrim mass. All ‘kitchen cerrado.’ So we ended up at a familiar location.

After church there were many families out walking, scootering, or riding their small cars.

This being our rest day, we started with a walk to the lavandería. No washing facilities at our hostal but it was a good time to wash clothes. Then café and a snack.

Today is the day for ‘En Marcha Contra el Cancer’ in Pontevedra. Had we known, we could have participated in the 6.75 km run/walk and earned a pink shirt. It was nice to see many families out together for the event.

We walked a bit more, checked out the path for tomorrow. We get to start with a lovely bridge across the Rio Lerez (Ponte do Burgo). Then we strolled through a flea market. Luckily nothing I need.

We made sure to have a nice meal before siesta. Thanks to Katharine W, we went to Il Piccola and had a great time.

  • Camino Portuguese Day 12

    3 oktober 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

After a day of rest we were ready to walk some more, though a bit apprehensive about the upcoming hill and heat.

In the evening we went to a nearby park for a bit, but mostly relaxed. Not as relaxed as the three pilgrims in the photo.

This morning we actually started in the dark, about 7:30. Sunrise is 8:30. But Pontevedra is well lit. No problem finding our way.

  • Pontevedra to Combarro

    3 oktober 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

It was mostly light by the time we reached the spot where the Camino divides. We could go straight and it would be very busy with pilgrims, or left on the Spiritual Variant, Variante Espiritual. Less busy, more beautiful, but with a big hill. Guess what we chose?

The first half of the walk had small hills, some nice views, and a café stop after the Poio Monastery. Then on towards the cute, touristic town of Combarro.

  • Combarro to Armenteira

    3 oktober 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We stopped for brunch before the hill. Tortilla Español. This time I shared with Sharon and we still had leftovers for later. Combarro is also known for fishing and horreos.

Then we started to climb. And climb. We went from sea level to over 450m elevation. Basically uphill for about 9 km. We had some lovely views, but it was challenging.

We arrived at Armenteira, checked out the Monastery, then checked into the Municipal Albergue. Not fancy today.

Tomorrow will be almost all downhill.
