Plaza de la Independencia

Panama declared its independence from Colombia on November 3, 1903 in Plaza de la Independencia. This historic site is also known as Plaza Mayor or Cathedral Plaza. As you walk through the plaza, you'll find restaurants, shops, and varied artisan stalls.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama dominates the square. Construction on the cathedral began in 1688 but was not completed until 108 years later, in 1796. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama is an excellent example of colonial architecture. Statues of the 12 apostles of Christ adorn the exterior facade.Read more
