    Panama declared its independence from Colombia on November 3, 1903 in Plaza de la Independencia. This historic site is also known as Plaza Mayor or Cathedral Plaza. As you walk through the plaza, you'll find restaurants, shops, and varied artisan stalls.

    The Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama dominates the square. Construction on the cathedral began in 1688 but was not completed until 108 years later, in 1796. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama is an excellent example of colonial architecture. Statues of the 12 apostles of Christ adorn the exterior facade.

  • Plaza Simón Bolivarr

    Esta plaza arbolada se llamó originalmente San Francisco por la iglesia que la preside. No estaba contemplada en la planificación inicial del nuevo emplazamiento de Panamá. Pero un voraz incendio en 1756 acabó con 50 casas del sector, lo que produjo un amplio espacio baldío sobre el cual no se volvió a edificar.

    La plaza se rebautizó como un homenaje a Simón Bolívar en 1926, el centenario del Congreso Anfictiónico. El conjunto escultórico de bronce y granito honran al Libertador y es obra del español Mariano Benlliure

    The plazas in America were the authentic compendium of the city because, in these, everything happened. Until the construction of the French Canal began, the plazas located in Casco Antiguo were clear of trees and unpaved so that they could provide the social function of a theater of entertainment and collective festivities.

    The Plaza was renowned for bullfights, but before the end of the 19th century, the bullfighting festival was assigned to the future Plaza Herrera, an empty lot that arose from the fire of 1781 that devastated the old neighborhood of San José. As the government authorities decided against rebuilding, this space became a natural plaza initially known as Plaza of Triumph, where parties, bullfights, and celebrations of military victories took place.
