• Perugia Day 3 : Gubbio

    30 ноября 2023 г., Италия ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The bus to Gubbio was either before 8am or at 11.23am. As Gubbio is just a small medieval town, we decided that the later bus would give us enough time for a good look around. The first settlement in Gubbio dates back to the middle palaeolithic period. It was an ally of Rome from the 3rd century BC, and traces of Roman influence can still be seen in town. Most obviously in the Roman Theatre which we did not get to due to the rain.
We started our visit with a delicious all tartufo lunch at a Locanda del Tartufo. Then we braved the rain to get up to the Cathedral of San Mariano and Giacomo, fortunately with the help of an elevator. Gubbio has kindly provided 2 sets of elevators to take you to 2 different landings for this steep hillside town.
Maybe due to the rain, Gubbio was deserted. We were the only ones in the churches. The quiet and the sanctuary the church provided from the wind and rain must have contributed to my feeling of calm and serenity.
We then walked the medieval streets in the rain till we came across a fountain also nicknamed "la Fontana dei Matti" that according to tradition, anyone who ran round the fountain three times, and baptized by the water would be symbolicly be certified a "madman of Gubbio". Ruby and I ran round the fountain three times but didn't baptize with the water. Instead, we collected water from the drinking fountain next to it. So I have concluded that we are certified only half mad, or totally mad as we have drunk from the waters.
We also visited 2 other churches and took refuge in the Church of San Francesco to wait out of the rain for our bus back to Perugia.
We have not had a day trip without some trouble. When this trip went smoothly from the start, I was rather apprehensive when waiting for the bus back. I asked the the bus driver who dropped us off where to catch the bus back to Perugia, and he pointed across the road. So there we waited with a lady from Africa. Ruby then remarked that the bus across the road has Perugia written as it's final destination. I crossed the road to ask the driver and he confirmed that he was going to Perugia. Meanwhile, the African lady told Ruby that the bus to Perugia left from her side of the road, confirming what the bus driver from Perugia told us. Anyway, Ruby crossed the road to board the bus. Our bus tickets would not validate. So thinking we had the wrong bus, we left the bus and crossed back. I then started to worry that if this was the bus and we missed it, the next bus would not be for another 3 hours. So Ruby and I crossed back to the bus, and I had to buy tickets from the bus driver. The ride there costed us €1.50 each. The ride back was €6.50 each. To complicate things, I only had €12, or a €20 note and the driver did not give change. Fortunately, the African lady crossed the road to see if we were ok, and she happily gave me the €1 to make up our bus fare. Another travel angel. Would you believe that all that crossing of road (in the rain with cars zooming by) and confusion took place inside of 2 minutes.
We are back in the apartment safe and sound. We planned to do another day trip tomorrow and one from Rome, but with the inclement weather forecast and our track record, we are not doing anymore day trips. There is only so much stress and excitement 2 old travellers can take and there is only so many travel angels the universe will give us. I fear we're in debit on that account.

  • Perugia Day 4

    1 декабря 2023 г., Италия ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

It took us all of one hour to visit the historic centre of Perugia as we had already been to the Duomo and we weren't going to the galleries.
We did find a veggie stall to stock up for our stay in tomorrow as it is meant to rain practically all day.
We did stop for gelato and coffee and Ruby and I reckon the gelato was the best so far.
We rested in the afternoon as Ruby is still getting over her cold.
Going for a tartufo dinner then resting till we get to Rome on Sunday.

  • Perugia Day 5

    2 декабря 2023 г., Италия ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

We were supposed to stay in as the weather was meant to be bad. The weather was down graded so we went exploring the other side of Perugia for about an hour. Saw some beautiful churches then came back to the apartment and rested for the rest of the day. The highlight of the walk was when we entered the Church of St Philipe Neri, the pipe organs were playing with what sounded like a professional organist practicing pieces. We were surprised to find a little boy playing the organ who looked like he was only 12 years old.

  • Rome Day 1

    3 декабря 2023 г., Италия ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Our journey from Perugia to Rome went smoothly without any incident, and this is our last and final public transport transfer. We did not trust ourselves with the public transport to the airport so we've booked a private transfer recommended by a friend who lives in Rome. Relieved we be to complete all these bus, train and luggage transfers. It was a total of 24 accommodation transfers over 5 countries in 13 weeks.

We went to very busy flea market in Trastevere, Rome where our accommodation is. There were miles of trestle tables piled high with clothes from €2- €60 per item. It was so busy, even Ruby could not find anything to buy. Less than halfway through, we abandoned market in search for lunch. We then retreated from the Sunday crowds into Basilica Santa Maria Trastevere.

  • Rome Day 2

    4 декабря 2023 г., Италия ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Ruby seems to have a persistent virus that leaves her tired in the afternoon. She had done 2 Covid test both negative. Ruby reports to be feeling better today, but she's loosing her voice. So to get her to full recovery, we decided to stay in and rest another day. Only went out for pastry and my coffee in the morning, and lunch. I got fish to cook in the apartment for dinner.
I did go on my own for a little explore of 3 churches in Trastevere in the late afternoon while Ruby rested.
The churches were beautifully decorated with mosaics and some amazing scupltures.

  • Rome Day 3 Villa Farnesina

    5 декабря 2023 г., Италия

It rained all morning and poor Ruby had been cooped up in the accommodation most of yesterday, and today she finally felt better from the symptoms.
We wore our wet weather gear of rain coat and rain pants and got to Villa Farnesina. This is where Raphael was commissioned to do the frescoes of the Greek legend of Psyche and Cupid. There was also The Nude Gioconda painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
Came back to the accommodation for lunch and a rest before venturing to the old Giovanni Montemartini Thermoelectric Power House that's turned into an extension of the Museo Capitoline.
This gallery was most interesting because of the contrast of the industrial machines and turbines displayed with the ancient sculptures, mosaics and sarcophagus. There was even an interesting exhibit of a girl's grave goods that were found in her sarcophagus. It was so detailed that the doll wore a ring that was the key to get own trinket box.
We then met up with a lovely couple for drinks and dinner. They were wonderful company and they took us to a beautiful restaurant called Angelina's.

  • Rome Day 3 National Gallery Modern Art

    6 декабря 2023 г., Италия ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

We visited the oldest pharmacy in Rome. The pharmacy was run by more than a hundred Carmalite Friars, making lotions, potions and even alcoholic beverages since the 15th century. It was a working pharmacy right up to 1957 until they closed but the fittings, furnishings, herbs, medicines and frescoes were still intact.
We had one of the Carmalite Friars do the tour in English.
We then went to the National Gallery of Modern Art. Artworks were displayed in themes and not chronologically. There was a Klimt, a Degas, a Hayez, a Van Gogh, a Pollack and other wonderful artists, beautiful sculptures of Antonio Cavona and Alfonso Balzico. Then there were also some bizarre installations.

We decided to go to St Peter's Basilica today and Church of St Louis and Basilica of San Maria Sopra Minerva to see works by Caravagio, Michaelangelo and Lippo, just to name a few.
I had a truffle pasta that was so good, I went back for dinner. They were very generous with their truffles at Mozzichi.Читать далее

  • Making our way home

    8 декабря 2023 г., Индия ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

We had the most luxurious transfer to the airport that costed us 10€ more than a taxi, recommended by a friend in Rome and it was well worth it.
The driver came on time, helped us with our luggage into a Mercedes. A limousine service. After 24 transfers by bus, trains and sometimes bus again. Having to lug the suitcases up hills, down hills, up steps, down steps, through cobble streets, weaving and dodging dog poop and wees, we truly felt like royalty. To top it off, the driver opened and shut our doors for us and was good looking to boot.
We are now on a very long flight to Singapore. Even the cattle class on Singapore Airlines seems luxurious too.
A minor observation that throughout our trip, we are the only people using corded head phones, a testimony of the times. Even people much older than us have these modern ear buds.

It has been an amazing holiday packed with fun, wonderful sights and lovely encounters with travel angels that have made this trip epic.

  • Singapore Day Transit

    9 декабря 2023 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

From the time we landed it was food, food and more food. We went from Singapore airport to the hotel Kai was at, arriving at 6am. Our daughter Kai came from Perth to Singapore so she could see us a day earlier. We were all so excited to see each other after 3 long months.
Kai had been finding out nice places to eat, so within 10 minutes of being in her hotel, it was off to Hong Lim hawkers centre for first breakfast, then followed by Chinatown complex food court for second breakfast. As we were so early, Kai was only third in the queue to order char kwey teow. By the time it was seven in the morning, the line was 10 people deep and getting longer. Really delicious.
Then after running some errands, I met up with my old college friends for more eating at Serangoon Garden Foodcourt. I then rejoined Kai and Ruby for Indian lunch with nieces.
Finally Japanese feast with Ruby's sister's family. I think we might have put back all the weight we lost in Europe.
