    Dunsborough

    Sep 27–30, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

We try to have an annual family holiday. Swee and Jamie are busy, and we were not able to co-ordinate Kai's school holidays with Warrick's work swings. So this family road trip was just Kai, Grace and I, with Kai's friend Amanda.

We started off at Dunsborough as we had promised to go snorkeling at The Aquarium with a friend. We were very fortunate to be able to stay at Warrick's mum's beautiful home in Dunsborough. Being one to feel the cold in the ocean even in summer, I asked my sister Pearl if I could borrower any wetsuits or snorkeling gear to keep me warm. She very generously loaned me her one piece long sleeve full length wetsuit, a thick vest and a pull over head cover. I then had a new worry, how to get into that wetsuit that looked half my width. Despite Pearls assurance that it'll stretch and to just pull it on, I had visions of me rolling around the beach in an attempt to get into the wetsuit. Fortunately, Kai who is slimmer than I am wore the wetsuit, and I wore everything else; a snorkeling jacket, the vest over that and Kai's long snorkeling pants. The water was icy, but we managed to stay in the water for about half an hour.

Thursday was orchid hunting day, and Grace wanted to return to Calgardup Caves where we saw lots of orchids in 2022. Edwin and Fong picked up Grace and I in the morning Kai and Amanda took our car for lunch at White Elephant and a walk around Margaret River. Unfortunately, the area across the road from Calgardup Caves was very overgrown with wattle and climbing hovea. We saw quite a few donkey orchids and cowslips in the carpark, and a few forest mantis orchids around one spot across the road.

Grace, Jane and I had dinner on Thursday night was at Yari. A most delicious end to a lovely 3 nights in Dunsborough.

  • Albany

    September 28, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We arrived in Albany late yesterday at 5pm from Dunsborough. Stopped for crepes in Manjimup at Le Belle Visite for lunch before driving via Donnelly River to Albany. Amanda and Kai got up close and personal to the emus and the kangaroos in Donnelly River.
We were too tired to go out for dinner so we made an easy chicken stock veges, kway teow soup.
Had a fun game of Boggle with the girls beating us hands down.

This morning we went to the Farmer's Market then visited the Town Hall Gallery and did a little walking up and down York Street. This was followed by a visit to the Vinnie's Op Shop. All came out empty handed except Kai's jeans. We headed back to the accommodation for a rest and an instant noodle lunch.
Ruby had been brewing a red eye since lunchtime yesterday. We finally decided to get the Dr to check it out just to make sure it's nothing sinister. The after hours GP is so good. There are free parking spots and free consult too.
We finished the night with a lovely Thai dinner and hilarious game of Pictionary.

  • Albany Day 2

    September 29, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We went to the Boatshed markets, where Ruby was waylaid by a woodwork gentleman explaining his wares in fine detail for approximately, a long time.....
We also found a hall table that was beautifully made however we do not have the space to take it home in our car. Kai has kindly offered to drive back to Albany to pick it up for us but we managed to exchange phone numbers with the woodworker and he would bring it to Pinjarra and we would meet him there.
We then visited the Vancouver Art Gallery and besides the beautiful pottery and art works on display, I bumped into an old colleague and friend that I had not seen in almost 20 years.
We finished the day with a vineyard lunch at Monty's Leap, then the playground. After which the girls are going to have bath, bottle (of the alcoholic type) and bedtime.

  • Denmark Day Trip

    September 30, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We did a day trip to Valley of the Giants and Denmark today.
The girls visited the Valley of the Giants whilst Ruby and I hiked along the Bibilmun track heading towards Sappers Bridge.
We met up with the girls when they finished their tree top walk and headed to Denmark for lunch and looking into the quaint shops there. We bought 6 jars of Seville marmalade from the Co-op shop. There were only 4 jars in the shop when we got there, but the nice lady rang to ask the jam maker to bring some more to the shop. Kai bought us afternoon tea, which included the yummiest mocha eclair from the Denmark bakery.
We had ABBA travel music from Albany to Valley of the Giants.
After an active day, we retired with a bath, and a movie on Netflix whilst Amanda made a yummy dinner. I thought I'd do some cooking too and almost cooked us in the super hot water when I drew the bath, being distracted watching Netflix.
After dinner, just to annoy Kai and tease Amanda, we belted out the song Fernando but replaced the lyrics with Amanda.
    Hilarity to end the day.
