    New Year 's Day

    January 1, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

We woke up early this New Year 's Day to do a new hike at Mount Martin. Not a hundred metres from the carpark, we found a custard sun orchid. This was the one and only orchid we managed to find today. Mount Martin would be a great place next spring for orchid hunting. The conditions look ideal for orchids.
We finished the hike early so we could go snorkeling at Nanarup beach. Kai and Warrick joined us at the Nanarup beach. It was really good to see them. Snorkeling was not amazing by the beach was a great place to swim. It was extremely cold though.
We had a very good New Year's Day.

  • Albany Day 7

    January 2, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    Mount Melville
Ruby walked all the way back to the accommodation from Mount Melville this morning.

    Garnet Hunting
Warrick took us to The Sound just after Attaturk memorial to look for garnet rocks. We had to do some scrambling over rocks to get to the place where garnets are found.
He showed us gneiss and dolarite dykes before showing us garnet in granite rocks.
Before we found garnets, Warrick showed us sea salt crystals and also the carcass of the leaf dragon. After we found garnets, we continued clambering over the rocks to find shells and find crabs in the rich pools.

  • Denmark Day 1

    January 3, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We packed up and left for Denmark but we had to meet up with Kai first to help her take her tent and mattress home with us to make room in her car to collect some furniture on her way home. 4 of us hada very delicious lunch together at Don Japanese across the road from Dog Rock Motel, Albany. Kai and Warrick left for Nornalup near Walpole, and we made our way to Denmark.

We are staying at a 3 bedroom granny flat near the Wilson's inlet. The accommodation is in great location but the house is dated.
We were glad to be here because we were able to do our week accumulated laundry.
    Generally having a restful day.

    Walk into Denmark Township

    January 4, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

As we drive to our accommodation yesterday, Ruby confidently declared that it won't be more than 4km walk along the Bibbulmun track into town. Our host did say that it is a very long walk, "upwards of 6km". It was 8.74km from accommodation into town. It was a very easy level walk through Karri forests, swampy reeds, and some lovely vistas of the inlet. There was even a magical section with fairy doors so fairies can enjoy what The Bib has to offer.

The lovely gentleman at Cottage Craft, where Ruby gets her supply of Seville Marmalade, was so horrified at the thought of us walking all the way back again, he offered us a lift. Tempted but undeterred, we politely declined. We did have lunch in town so we were refueled and ready to walk. We were so happy we did as we FOUND THE CHRISTMAS LEEK ORCHID! Right there, just beside the path. Did not see it on the way there, or maybe it was not opened at 9am when we passed it, but spotted it on the return. We were excited enough and celebrated when we saw the first CHRISTMAS LEEK ORCHID with only one flower on the stalk partially open. Then not 3 metres along was a splendid display. A full stalk, all opened to reward us for the effort of hiking back. Oh, the joys of the forest!
Ruby made pancakes for afternoon tea which we had on the patio overlooking the many bird feeders in the garden, and watched the birds. Total distance walked today was 20.8km.

  • Madfish Bay and Waterfall Beach

    January 5, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We decided to go to the beach for a snorkel as the day was suppose to be a warm 30°C.
We headed to Green Pool first but lines of cars were parked 300m from the beach so we abandoned that idea. We went to Madfish Bay instead where there were lots of cars but we managed to find a park about 50m from the beach. The water and the winds are really cold so we changed our minds about snorkeling. Just waded knee deep into the ocean and left. We did go to Waterfall Beach to check out the waterfall and there was a tiny one from a deep spring that flowed all year round.
We then went to the meadery for ice-cream, visited Moombaki winery for a bit of tasting and came back to the accommodation.
