    Bolganup homestead Porongarup

    December 23, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We have just arrived at Bolganup homestead in Porongarup. The Faulkner family settled in 1908 and built the homestead in 1912. This is where the host grew up, as did his father.
It is a quaint little house with 3 bedrooms but only one toilet and bathroom.
There are 5 adults staying here so let us hope that the bathroom and toilet situation isn't going to be too challenging.
We had lovely cheese platter and then yummy lamb kofta with salad for dinner.
We have all headed to bed early as we are hoping to get a walk in before lunch.

  • Christmas Eve

    December 24, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Ruby and I woke very early this morning and were taking a walk before the household even stirred.
After breakfast, we ventured to do a short 2km hike at Wansbrough walk which I mistakenly read to be an easy and not too hilly walk. Turned out to have a very steep gradient and a difficult hike.
The hard work paid off though, as we had a very scrumptious lunch at Maleeya Thai Restaurant. It was surprising to find Highland cattle in the paddock, an impressive cacti garden and authentic Thai food truly in the middle of nowhere .
After a restful afternoon, we had the most yummy glazed Christmas ham with salad and potato salad, painstakingly prepared by Ruby and Kai.
We finished the night with monopoly then icecream panatone.

  • Christmas Day

    December 25, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Christmas morning started with yummy shortbread and coffee. The start of our gastronomic journey today.

We then followed with Christmas presents giving, and then a fantastic breakfast prepared by Warrick and Kai.

We then climbed a mountain on Christmas Day. We unanimously decided to hike up Castle Rock with Kai, Warrick and Jane continuing all the way up to the Sky Walk, which is a platform at the top of Castle Rock that circumnavigates the rock.
After a 5.16 km walk, we had a picnic of yesterday's ham for lunch.

When we got back to the accommodation, Ruby started to prepare the turkey for our dinner. Whilst the turkey was in the oven, we went to the barn which was converted into a games room with pool table, ping pong and table soccer. We had to work off some of the food, somehow...
Dinner was roast turkey and Christmas pudding for dessert. Super scrumptious.

As I am writing this entry in bed, I am sitting straight up, trying to digest the copious amount of delicious food that I have eaten all day.

  • Boxing Day

    December 26, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    Nancy Peak Hike

It is Boxing Day and traditionally, the family go Boxing Day sales shopping. As we are in the middle of nowhere, there isn't a place to do shopping so the family resorted to shop online......
Ruby and I did go for a nice hike up to Nancy Peak after breakfast and left the young ones home to do shopping.
The rest of boxing day was spent recovering from Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It concluded with a very hilarious competition of table soccer and pool at the games room.

  • Albany

    December 27, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today we were all leaving Porongarup, with the young ones off camping in Hopetoun and we were heading to Albany.
Before checking into our motel, we did a short hike at Twin Creek Reserve. Finally found the slipper orchid. This place will be well worth going to in spring as the write up say that there were lots of variety of wildflowers to be found.
We had a restful afternoon post check in. Dinner was at the very well reviewed Tandoori Indian Restaurant. We went to the house on 137 Mueller Street, the largest and most spectacular Christmas lights house ever. The garden was lit with reindeer, Santa in the trees, the lawn had fairy lights, rose garden had 65 red roses as that was related to cystic fibrosis. The place was raising awareness and funds collected for cystic fibrosis. Absolutely amazing!!

  • Albany day 2

    December 28, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Gourmandise start to our morning always sets us up for a great day.
Today is a pretty chilled day of walking in Albany City Centre, lunch at the balcony of Emu Point Cafe overlooking the new swimming lagoon. It was lovely to return to Lilydale accommodation just above the port of Albany.
Concluded with a lovely romantic dinner at Liberte.

    December 30, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    Bald Head Hike

We had ham variation number two today as ham sandwiches.

We started at 8am to hike up Bald Head.
The track improvements to Bald Head had just finished. There were 17 cars parked already. We were used to being the only ones on this hike . Never known it to be so busy . We prefer the raw difficult hikes where nobody goes .

It took us 3 hrs 50mins to get to the end of the peninsula. Almost 7hrs to finish the walk.
The views were as spectacular as ever. The walk was still challenging even with the trek upgrade. They have added 100s of steps and board walks which made it easier then on sand dunes but much harder as there were so many steps.

With so many people on the track, it was interesting to see the parade of fashion. Many yummy young females wore a full face of makeup and trendy figure clinging exercise lycra tights under crop bra-like tops. One lady even hiked in a cotton sundress one could wear to lunch at a winery. Lots of skin was on parade. I don't know how they went through tight narrow paths with overgrown scratchy shrubs.

  • New Year's Eve

    December 31, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Saturday morning in Albany is for visiting the Farmer's Market. We almost missed it as Grace directed us to a very subdued and small craft market in the main York Street near the town hall where we bought 3 huge zucchinis for $1 each. One is a yellow zucchini, something different to try. Fortunately Ruby drove back to the accommodation and instead drove to where she thought the markets were. We felt the bustle of the market as we turned into the street. It was a small but busy market, and was so lovely as everyone queued up. When it was our turn, the stall holders took time to explain the produce to us, and there was no rush. A very pleasant experience indeed. We bought eggs, tatsoi, pakchoi, English spinach, blueberries and cherries, bread and almond croissant. On the way back to the accommodation, we passed a Buddhist monk and nun. We remembered that once a week, Venerable Mudu from the Albany branch of Buddhist Society of Western Australia does a pindapat, when monks walk through the streets with their alms bowl, accepting the generosity of the public made through offerings of food. We quickly parked, stood on the pavement and offered some cherries to the them in exchange for a blessing and a Christmas card. A very privileged experience indeed.

Lunch was at Chanya Thai near the TransWA bus station with Mimi who just moved from Perth to Albany just over a year ago, Warrick and Kai who moved from camping at Bremer Bay to Albany. Chanya Thai is small family run restaurant with homely food. Our friend Mimi chefs for the owners at another establishment, 6 degrees Pub, so she knows the kitchen staff. We feasted so heartily that Grace and I needed a walk after lunch. We walked along the path outside our accommodation, Lilydale Cottage, towards Middleton Beach. Plan was to walk 20 minutes and then turn back. The whole walk took us just on the hour. We went a bit off track up Mt Clarence looking for orchids, and saw more Slipper orchids. In keeping with serendipitous encounters of the day, we met one of the fellow walkers from yesterday's hike at Bald Head, a lovely young lady who broke her wrist in 3 different places whilst rock climbing (ouch!) and still came along this rock climbing holiday as she'd booked it before her accident. She was looking for her friends who were climbing on the cliffs along that path. She did Bald Head hike yesterday as the climbing spot yesterday was too difficult for her to access with a wrist in cast.
Another quiet evening in Lilydale Cottage eating through our large stash of food from Perth, and spinach from the market.

  • New Year 's Day

    January 1, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

We woke up early this New Year 's Day to do a new hike at Mount Martin. Not a hundred metres from the carpark, we found a custard sun orchid. This was the one and only orchid we managed to find today. Mount Martin would be a great place next spring for orchid hunting. The conditions look ideal for orchids.
We finished the hike early so we could go snorkeling at Nanarup beach. Kai and Warrick joined us at the Nanarup beach. It was really good to see them. Snorkeling was not amazing by the beach was a great place to swim. It was extremely cold though.
We had a very good New Year's Day.

  • Albany Day 7

    January 2, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    Mount Melville
Ruby walked all the way back to the accommodation from Mount Melville this morning.

    Garnet Hunting
Warrick took us to The Sound just after Attaturk memorial to look for garnet rocks. We had to do some scrambling over rocks to get to the place where garnets are found.
He showed us gneiss and dolarite dykes before showing us garnet in granite rocks.
Before we found garnets, Warrick showed us sea salt crystals and also the carcass of the leaf dragon. After we found garnets, we continued clambering over the rocks to find shells and find crabs in the rich pools.

  • Denmark Day 1

    January 3, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We packed up and left for Denmark but we had to meet up with Kai first to help her take her tent and mattress home with us to make room in her car to collect some furniture on her way home. 4 of us hada very delicious lunch together at Don Japanese across the road from Dog Rock Motel, Albany. Kai and Warrick left for Nornalup near Walpole, and we made our way to Denmark.

We are staying at a 3 bedroom granny flat near the Wilson's inlet. The accommodation is in great location but the house is dated.
We were glad to be here because we were able to do our week accumulated laundry.
    Generally having a restful day.

  • Walk into Denmark Township

    January 4, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

As we drive to our accommodation yesterday, Ruby confidently declared that it won't be more than 4km walk along the Bibbulmun track into town. Our host did say that it is a very long walk, "upwards of 6km". It was 8.74km from accommodation into town. It was a very easy level walk through Karri forests, swampy reeds, and some lovely vistas of the inlet. There was even a magical section with fairy doors so fairies can enjoy what The Bib has to offer.

The lovely gentleman at Cottage Craft, where Ruby gets her supply of Seville Marmalade, was so horrified at the thought of us walking all the way back again, he offered us a lift. Tempted but undeterred, we politely declined. We did have lunch in town so we were refueled and ready to walk. We were so happy we did as we FOUND THE CHRISTMAS LEEK ORCHID! Right there, just beside the path. Did not see it on the way there, or maybe it was not opened at 9am when we passed it, but spotted it on the return. We were excited enough and celebrated when we saw the first CHRISTMAS LEEK ORCHID with only one flower on the stalk partially open. Then not 3 metres along was a splendid display. A full stalk, all opened to reward us for the effort of hiking back. Oh, the joys of the forest!
Ruby made pancakes for afternoon tea which we had on the patio overlooking the many bird feeders in the garden, and watched the birds. Total distance walked today was 20.8km.

  • Madfish Bay and Waterfall Beach

    January 5, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We decided to go to the beach for a snorkel as the day was suppose to be a warm 30°C.
We headed to Green Pool first but lines of cars were parked 300m from the beach so we abandoned that idea. We went to Madfish Bay instead where there were lots of cars but we managed to find a park about 50m from the beach. The water and the winds are really cold so we changed our minds about snorkeling. Just waded knee deep into the ocean and left. We did go to Waterfall Beach to check out the waterfall and there was a tiny one from a deep spring that flowed all year round.
We then went to the meadery for ice-cream, visited Moombaki winery for a bit of tasting and came back to the accommodation.
