    Windhoek

    September 23, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Arrived at Windhoek, capital of Namibia, early afternoon. I saw a few baboons chilling along the road from the airport. After getting the car and got briefed for the next 3 weeks, there was just enough time for a quick tour around the Christuskirche, then diner and end the evening with a bit of the South Africa/Ireland rugby game. Oh and there was 2 cats and a suricate at the guesthouse, the perfect combination for a warm welcome.Read more

  • Windhoek - > Kalahari

    September 24, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

A 4h drive separate Windhoek from the Kalahari desert. I spotted 2 Pumbas and a Timon on the way. As I drive the vegetation become sparse, trees become bushes until the valley where tonight campground is. There is probably more water in the ground and less harsh conditions with a bit of wind protection. Trees are higher and there are a few farms with green round fields. We end the day with a safari tour to spot some wildlife. All in all a great first day. Namibia is up to its reputation.Read more

  • Quiver tree forest

    September 25, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Quick stop on the way from Auob to Hobas to see the Quiver Tree forest. This tree was used to make quiver. The local wildlife (daman) is chill AF 😁

  • Fish river canyon 1

    September 25, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Arrived late afternoon at the lodge but with enough time to go see the canyon....and what a view! There was a bit of an evening mist but the sunset was amazing. The sunset light and shadows briging forth all the shapes of the canyon. What a great reward after the long drive.Read more

  • Fish river canyon 2

    September 26, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Went back to the fish river canyon this morning. The view was clearer than yesterday and the sky was spotted with clouds creating nice shadows patterns on the canyon. They cleared up quite quickly as we drove to farther viewpoints. Nobody seems to go to the last ones even though they are as much beautiful as the first onesRead more

  • Ai-Ais

    September 26, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Drove from the fish river canyon to Ai-Ais hot springs. Stop on our way for lunch in the middle of a small mountain range to cook our meal over fire. We arrived at the hot spring early afternoon and enjoyed a bath in the swimming pool heated directly with the 65°C hot water from the spring.
After a quick laundry, we had a drink with a family that are doing a trip around the world with their 2 kids starting with Namibia.
We end the day with another nice diner over a campfire.
Got to go, I forgot my laundry... 😅

  • Hiking around Aus

    September 27, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Small hike of 4.5km and 200m D+ close to Aus lodge with a nice view and incredible almost fluorescent flowers.
There was an old car with lots of bullet holes at the back and on the right side. 2 thieves tried to steal some diamond from the diamond mine, detective caught up with them and gun shots ensued. They both got killed. So we'll probably stay away from the diamond mine....Read more

  • Aus lodge

    September 27, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We're not sleeping in the tent tonight! We have a nice chalet with a big boulder in it 😆

  • On the D707 from Aus to Sessriem

    September 28, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The D707 is a gravel road that makes a scenic detour from the usual road joining Aus to Sessriem. It offers an ever changing landscape with mountains, desert and vast plains.
On the way, we helped a South African family that slashed a tire, saw some oryx, ostrich and sprintboks. And the truck in the picture is a kind of snow plow to level gravel roads
All in all a nice drive.

  • Elim dune

    September 28, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We arrived to Sessriem mid afternoon which gave us a bit of time to go hike the first dune of sossusvlei: Elim dune.
With red sand contrasting with the white sand of the plain, the dark shades of the Naukluft Mountains in the background and the dark blue sky, it was the perfect way to end the day.
But, things got interesting when an oryx wandering in the dune parking did a preventive charge to one too curious tourist. Nobody got hurt, but lesson learned, you can be close but not closer 😅

  • Sossusvlei

    September 29, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

    Red sand dunes of Sossusvlei.
    Dead trees of Deadvlei.
    Beauty of Namib desert.

Woke up at 5am, drove through the sunset till sossusvlei. Got stuck in soft sands along the waybut quickly back on tracks, literally 😁
Picked one of the dunes around Deadvlei to climb. Watched an oryx also doing a climb on the dune in front of us as well as a few humans. Head back down to Deadvlei to see the 800 years old ghost of trees standing up no matter what.

  • Solitaire

    September 30, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

The well named Solitaire is a little town lost in the C19 between Sessriem and Walvis Bay.
Famously known for its wrecked cars and its bakery

  • Swakopmund

    September 30, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

We did not have time to explore the city, only the sea front.
There is a sea shore fog almost all year long. It is very impressive as you can see a clear line a few kilometers inland where the fog stops which is pretty much where the desert begins.Read more

  • Sandwich Harbor

    October 2, 2023 in Namibia ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

We took a 4x4 tour to Sandwich Harbor, which started with our car loosing its spare tank...
After a quick duck tape fix, we're back on track.
We drove for around 50km along the shore, with sea lions and cormorants along the way until we arrived a Sandwich Harbor, which is basically the desert ending with a 100m+ dune directly in the ocean.Read more
