Genoa has an integrated transport system including buses, metro (subway), water taxi, cog rail, funiculars, and ascensores. A single ticket lets you ride any of these, but they are “free to residents” on the weekends. Hey, we live here this weekend!! (But we paid anyway).
The last 3 are special designs to go up steep hills or mountains, generally is ski or mountain areas but also in some urban areas with extreme hills, like Genoa.

Cog railway is a steep grade railway with a toothed rack rail, usually between the running rails. The trains are fitted with one or more cog wheels or pinions that mesh with this rack rail.

Funicular is characterized by two counterbalanced carriages (also called cars or trains) permanently attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable, which is looped over a pulley at the upper end of the track.

Finally the ascensore is basically an elevator, however the ones in Genoa will travel both vertically and horizontally. Imagine our surprise when we rode down, then saw rails coming out of a tunnel and our car started moving across them. Really interesting!!
