    Mono Lake is a cornerstone in the battle for water in California: since Los Angeles began diverting water from streams feeding the lake in the 1940s, the water level had dropped dramatically and the salinity is nowadays 2,5 times higher than in the ocean. That leads to a unique ecosystem, tufa sandstone formations that grew in the water to be visible now, and one of California‘s longest fight of environmental protection groups against the government as well as a milestone win in court in 1983 and 1994.
