Highway 1 Carmel - Santa Cruz

I had planned to drive down Highway one from Monterey for 60 km to where it is damaged by a land slide in 2022 - I wanted to see the famous Big Sur. But approaching the highway I learned that it is now blocked only 11 miles south of Carmel due to more landslides that happened earlier this month! This, and the fact that on a Saturday with great weather everything is completely overrun by people, forced several changes of plans on me. I stopped at several places in Garrapata State Park at the coast, had a seafood lunch in Carmel, then north towards San Francisco all the way to Santa Cruz. This seaside town has the only remaining historical amusement park (Boardwalk) on the West Coast, and a long pier.Read more
