Split and the Diocletian Palace

Split is known for its beaches and its fortress-like complex, the Diocletian Palace. The Roman emperor Diocletian wanted to retire here so he built this huge palace over a ten year period from the year 295 to 305. Eventually, the Palace was abandoned but the Roman ruins here remain some of the best this side of Italy.
