Off to an adventure in Sri Lanka

Two friends and me are enjoying four weeks on the stunning island Sri Lanka. The island is below India and about 65'000 km2 in size. Not only do we'd like to get insight another culture, but also we'd like to escape from the hustle and bustle of life im Switzerland and unwind in nature.

I hope you're going to enjoy my blog :-)

    First day: Culture shock

We had already experienced a lot just on our flight to Sri Lanka. Firstly, one of of us lost her glasses in the plane and we didn't have enough time to go back, because we needed to catch the next fly. We were already too late though ( I didnt want to miss the flight like in Argentina haha). Secondly, we wanted to get a local SIM card and later we realized that the Swiss SIM card of one friend was missing. But luckily we found it in the end.
Furthermore, when we arrive at the airport in Colombo (the capital city of Sri Lanka), there were already a lot of people who wanted us to book a tour around the island or give us a ride to the hostel.

Finally, we arrived in Negombo safely. Unfortunately, there was a mistake in the booking of the hostel and so we had a big discussion withe the manager and our travel agency in Switzerland. Already a good beginning of our travel ;)

Brenda (one of my friend) who lost her glasses went on a motorbike with one guy of the hostel to get some new glasses. A real adventure...but it's better she tells you the story directly...;)

While she was looking for some glasses, Edmée an me went for a walk along the cost. We were the only tourists and everyone was gazing at us and ever y two seconds a Tuktuk stopped and asking for a ride. We got bothered from time to time. Nevertheless, we tried to get to know the city and it's just a matter of time we're getting used to it.

We were very tired in the evening and enjoyed our first dinner, rize and fish, in the hostel.

  • Wilpattu National Park

    August 3, 2018 in Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌬 32 °C

Second day: Ride to the National Parc

The breakfast was very delicious. We got Pol Roti, Parippu (lentil curry) and Pol Sambol (Grated coconut with lemon and chillie). We thought this day is gonna be better than the first one. But unfortunately we got to know the downside of the country. I think it's also a disadvantage three girls travelling together, because they always try to rip you off and we're not really used to bargain. They wanted to convince us to book a driver (who speaks english) for one part of our trip. But we were really distrustful and prefered to meet the guide first. Not surprisingly, the driver couldn't speak English at all.
We also paid too much just to go from Negombo to our next stop the National Park. The driver was very friendly though, eventhough he cheated us later.

    The National Park:

At dawn, we were already up for our next destination: Wilpattu National Park. It is known for its leopards and that’s what we hoped for. With a rented car,its driver and a guide, our chances would be quite good.
The first animal we saw were tourists. It is hard to believe, but so far we had not met any other tourists.
Other animals like peacocks and deers were quite easy to spot. Crocodiles, eagles, monkeys and much more crossed our way.
But our highlight were the two leopards cubs.
Firstly,we thought we would miss them because the many tourists were in the way. Luckily the leopards moved and came really close by and we were really happy. After two minutes we left them on purpose, because we didn’t want to bother them any longer.

  • Anuradhapura

    August 4, 2018 in Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌬 32 °C

I'm sorry for the late update but we are so busy all the time :-)

Anurapadhura is one part of the famous Cultural Triangle in Sri Lanka. It belongs to the UNESCO. We visited the temples by bike, so were more independent. It was an adventure, because the bikes were not in the condition we're used to in Switzerland and the streets were sometimes very dangerous, especially in the evening, there was a lot of traffic All the local people wear white clothes around the temples and stupas. We learnt its because they want to be equal, no matter rich or poor. Sometimes the people want to take selfies or photos with us, especially the young girls are fascinated of us. Furthermore we visited the oldest tree called Bodhi tree. A lot of local families were sitting underneath the tree and worshipped.Read more

    August 7, 2018 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Polonnaruwa is an other part of the Cultural triangle. We booked a private driver for 5 days to visit all the famous places. His name is Nalin and he is very kind and funny. He knows a lot about the culture and also some secret spots. On the one hand we visited the museum with a private English guide and learnt more about Buddhism and the culture. On the other hand he told us about the old Kingdom. Even though it was sometimes difficult to unterstand the guide we enjoyed a lot and
broaden our horizon. In the evening we went to a very beautiful place for dinner, where we could try different curries with different levels of spices. I even tried the dynamite curry...
