    Plaka, Athens

    September 10, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We landed in Athens as day turned to night
From a taxi, absorbed it’s recognisable sight
Of the Acropolis, which literally means a high hill
But first stop, a supermarket for our fridge to fill.

Having plenty of time we decided to self explore
Chose our own itinerary, avoiding a crowded tour.
Wanted to circumnavigate the Acropolis base
We walked anticlockwise at a leisurely pace.

First stop Plaka at the infamous Athens stairs
Edged with a crazy array of tables and chairs.
Enjoying its quaint ambiance decided to stop
For a cold drink and rest perched on a rooftop.

But up high we found ourselves wind blown
So followed the map of relics made from stone.
As an extremely busy city you have to queue
Entertained by buskers while waiting for a view.

  • Monastiraki, Athens

    September 11, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The terrain results in many stairs to climb up & down
Chance to observe the folk within this colourful town.
With its plethora of tiny shops and gift stalls to peruse
Plus multiple alleyways where each other you can lose.

Browsing through items on offer was a pleasure
Olive wood spoons & sandals made from leather.
Tempted to try a Greek, street food staple
Chris tasted Koulouri, a big sesame bagel.

Cafés serve up shared plates with a trio of dips
Followed with charred souvlaki & a side of chips.
Checked out markets with octopus, squid and seafood
Then around the National Gardens for shade and solitude.

  • A is for Athens

    September 12, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Saw lots of Orthodox churches where locals go to pray
Amongst hotels and apartments where the tourists stay.
At A is for Athens restaurant enjoyed an evening meal
It’s unmatched for sunset views with a memorable feel.

Watched people in Monastraki Square walking the streets
Nostrils assaulted by the smell of tantalising charred meats
Buildings silhouetted with the arrival of night
The lit up Parthenon an unforgettable sight.

  • Acropolis and museum

    September 13, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Spent hours in the museum for us to learn
Stories behind the Grecian artefacts & urns.
Of Persians & Romans attacking the landscape
The constant destruction almost felt like rape.

Intricately carved wall friezes the invaders did pillage
To transport overseas and display in a foreign village.
Destroyed monument ruins, their puzzle pieces a mess
Marble statues whose silent secrets you must guess.

Incredibly the Athenian spirit survived the clashes
The Acropolis like a Phoenix rebuilding from ashes.
As you stand on that ground like so many before
Attempting to fathom history, you will be in awe.
