    Katherine

    October 17, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 36 °C

Returned to the station for our final goodbye
Sadly farewelling Carlton Hill with a deep sigh.
Our Jeep fully loaded with stuff to survive
The journey to Brisbane, a 4000 km drive.

Got to stay in Katherine instead of driving through
To discover if the sites all lived up to their review.
The local hot springs we thoroughly enjoyed and like
And Ellis Falls was certainly worth the uphill hike.

Katherine Gorge’s striking beauty was a must see
Despite the temperature over forty three degrees.
The indigenous guide was a delight and did amuse
As we finished our stay with an infamous dinner cruise.

  • Overland way

    October 21, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 36 °C

Onwards to Newcastle Waters, another station stay
Then Berkeley Homestead along the Overland Way.
Transversing the ‘Overland’ was precisely just that
Endless kilometres of barren land that’s totally flat.

Crossing back into Queensland stopping at Mt. Isa
The ’Hard Times’ Tour gave us a little appertizer
About the abundant mineral deposits underground
Lead, silver, copper & zinc continually being found.

Drove out to Lake Moondarra to see the day’s end
A few hours entertained by peacocks we did spend.
Diverted in search of an old disused Uranium mine
A challenging 4 wheel drive track with barely a sign.

Rock edges steep down to the dam, Mary Kathleen
It’s beautiful waters an unusual shade of blue / green.
Driving through Cloncurry for our stay at Julia Creek
At a caravan park that also provides a special treat.

To experience sunset submerged in an outdoor bath
A rain tank design for privacy which gave us a laugh.
Plus nibbles platter, bubbles of soap & champagne
Relaxed observing the darkening, pink hued plain.

  • Outback Queensland

    October 27, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

In Hughenden the Flinders Centre we did explore
Known for a collection of the remains of a dinosaur.
Numerous bones and amazing nautilus shell fossils
The Richmond Polycotylid skeleton’s quite colossal.

The gem fields around Emerald we decided to pass
Along the Burnett H’way edged with greening grass.
Biloela area is home to orchards full of citrus fruit
Feel excited nearing home along the inland route.

Explored the local villages of Munduburra and Monto
Snapping photos of the cleverly painted grain silos.
Reflecting on our adventures and all that we’ve seen
Arrived back in Brisbane in time to celebrate Halloween.
