The knish has its roots in Eastern Europe and is particularly associated with Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine originated in the Pale of Settlement, a region within the Russian Empire where Jews were permitted to reside. Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants brought the knish with them to the United States. The first knish bakery in America, Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery, opened in New York City in 1910
