Arrival in Jamestown - LUCY's Home
August 5 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 70 °F
Celeron Park is famous as the place where Babe Ruth hit a baseball into the lake. On October 18, 1921, Babe Ruth played in an exhibition game at Celoron Park during his rebellious post-season barnstorming tour. He famously hit a ball and a game home run that cleared the fence and landed into this lake. It was Lucille Ball’s beloved childhood hometown and she worked at this park in her teenage summers selling hamburgers and tickets. For this reason, the park is named for her and there are 2 statues there. Ironically, the first one of the famous Vitameatavegimen episode. The second statue commissioned after the first one was considered scary (or maybe Lucille would have said is FUNNY, which is why it was saved) and “rejected and moved”. Following the number of upset fans, the second one that looked so much more like her is now the center of the Park.
After getting acquainted with the Lucy environment (I will refer to her has Lucy from now on in the next few posts because that’s how most of us think of her and feel closer to her since we all Love Lucy) we continued on to get to Jamestown, NY the center of the Lucy and Comedy Universe!
As we pulled into town and found our hotel in the heart of it, right across the street was this giant wooden chair sculpture created in July 2019, by the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation to honor the city's rich history as a major furniture-manufacturing hub driven by skilled Swedish immigrants who arrived after the Civil War. Sadly, it no longer is a furniture hub at all in the past 50 years.
We were settled in and then went across the street to WICKED WARRENS for a great dinner. Ironically, one one the symbols of this “scary place” was a bizarre REDHEAD (see photos) at the Lucille Lounge (See VitameataMargarita and Lucy in the Sky drinks). Yes, we had quite a decadent meal ..but we were celebrating LUCY. After dinner we took a walk in the rain and saw the site of the original Winter Garden Theater. The Horse, some great murals and the highlight was the BUTTERFLY (with Karen), the Giraffe, the Broom (or maybe incense sticks) and Lucy.Read more
