    Eureka

    I've made it to Eureka. I stopped at the first bar/salon I got to for lunch and had, sausages and chicken for lunch, along with a few big cups of Diet Coke.

    I've got about 40 km to the target campground. Of course it includes another 600m pass. I stopped at a supermarket to get more food for the next few days. One rider had bought a box of Oats that he was only taking a few of so I added the rest to my food bag.

    I then stopped at a pizza shop for free wifi. But the pizza smelled so good I bought some!    Læs mere

    My first day in the USA. Strange to think that 49 years ago I was also in the USA.....

    Felt like my first proper day of riding. No real problems. Stopped early to do some fixes - dynamo cable had snapped, one bags strap tore off and one water bottle cage came loose - I stopped at a campsite while there was still daylight and got all three problems sorted.

    Was camping with a couple on their third tour. They said my speed was good for my target 28 days

    I've started eating a LOT of food. Quite happy to have two meals at a time when I sit down in a restaurant.    Læs mere

    Seen some large snow drifts on the pass. Next pass I am told is more than likely going to have snow.

    I felt slow all day, one by one people passed me and I didn't see them again. I saw some snow on the first pass but just on the side of the road. Red meadow pass normally has snow but was clear this year.

    Good day today, slow and steady. Had some knee pain for the first few hours, meant lots of pushing up hills. Apparantly the area between Eureka and Whitefish has the highest population of grizzlies in the USA. (and I STILL HAVN'T see one)

    Some amazing trail magic this evening with a free camping place and free juice. The couple here were tri athletes in their younger days and love supporting the Tour Divide riders as they come past.    Læs mere

    Cyclist only camping

    An old couple has opened their lawn to any cyclists who want to camp. They also provided a stove for heating water and cans of soda :)

    We asked them about bears and in 20 years they had only seen 1 bear from their home.

    I really appreciate people that open their hearts to the riders. It's just so nice to not have to worry about finding a place to stay.    Læs mere

    Really hard day today. Stomach cramps and dioreah all day. It ended up just being a slow slog all day. I wonder if the "Diet Coke" I had yesterday wasn't maybe normal Coke with lots of sugar.

    Camped at Holland lake. Stopped right next to the bear box so I didn't need to move at all in the morning to get my food out.Læs mere

    The Great Basin seems to be a great spot for sheep farming but I've only just seen sheep. I first saw the cowboy on the horizon. When I reached them I saw they were herding sheep.

    Ovando

    I've read and heard a lot about how cycle friendly ovando is. I've been looking forward to arriving here. Started with 3 hotdogs and a container of grapes. Made me feel a whole lot better.

    Decided on a short day today to let body recover from 2 days of not feeling well.

    I took a walk up to the local road house for supper. Not the greatest food but when you are hungry any food will do.

    Ovando has a number of places cyclists can stay, an old wagon, a tepee and the jail. I chose to stay in the jail.    Læs mere

    An exciting day for me. I've been very excited to see Ovando after hearing so much about it. When I got there I was very tired and chose to make it a bit of a rest afternoon. I took it peacefully but its amazing how quickly I wanted to get back on the bike instead of hanging around an d doing nothing.

    I really loved seeing the wooden cottages built deep inside the forest. Seems like a perfect match to my dream home.    Læs mere

    So I've made it to the 1000km mark. My cycle computer shows: Moving time of 76:43, and Total time of 173hr

    I managed to ride up Huckleberry pass earlier today. I think that was the first pass I rode from bottom to top!Læs mere

    Lincoln, steakhouse

    Good ride all the way to Lincoln. Started very cold so had warm clothes on. Within 10km I changed to my normal riding gear, it was still cold but I was no longer overheating. But within the next 10km it started raining so I added my wind breaker and rain jacket, of course the rain then stopped.

    After I reached top of the first pass I added my windproof skull cap to keep warm.

    I wanted a steak but they only do that for Dinner so I settled for a steak roll. It was steak but not quite what I wanted.    Læs mere

    Crossing the CDT (hiking trail)

    Before I thought of doing the Tour Divide I wanted to do one of the long hiking trails. The Continental Divide Trail is one of the three hiking trails making up the triple crown of hiking. (The other 2 are the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail)

    While the Tour Divide takes a month to do, the long hiking trails take 5-6 months for most people.    Læs mere

    After a good rest in Ovando I set myself the target of reaching Helena. I felt good and managed to ride up the first pass. I saw only 4 riders the whole day. It turned into a very long day with me finally reaching a hotel in Helena at 00:30.

    I managed to drop my phone on the downhill into Helena. I had to hike about 2km back up the pass before I found it.

    I saw quite a lot of animals including a bear cub (I left before the mommy bear saw me) and a badger.

    It was rainy and cold all day. I wore my down jacket and windproof skull cap for about half the day.    Læs mere

    What a difficult time I had today. Yesterday's long ride destroyed my legs. I could honestly not cycle any hills :( so I probably pushed my bike 40km uphill today. I even pushed my bike through a snow fall :). As far as I know that's the first time I've been out in snow. There was a light littering on snow on the ground.

    I think I saw a mountain lion! I saw a reddish brown animal streaking accross the road, it moved like a cat. It was bigger than I expected. (not sure it was a mountain lion as I really only saw a streak of color)

    I took a wrong turn today while not concentrating on my GPS. I ended up riding to the top of a mountain where there was a beautiful lake. While it wasted time at least I got some nbice views.    Læs mere

    This morning I got chased out by the guy opening the picnic area gate :). Last night I really tried to make it to a camp ground but after what felt like (and was) hours of riding slowly and pushing I gave up and just camped in a camp ground.

    Not like I knew I wasn't supposed to be there (Last night I carried my bike over the fence as the gates were locked ;) )    Læs mere

    Wild Camping

    Stopped early to sleep. Again I was slowly pushing my bike for much of the day and just wanted to rest. It was very peaceful sitting in my tent and looking out over the valley.

    I do admit to being nervous camping out like this in bear country. I certainly would not want to encounter a bear while I am sleeping so I keep my bike nearby with the bear spray.Læs mere

    Ive arrived in Butte and with the gears still making a noice went to find the local bike shop. Only 1 is marked on my maps. Unfortunatly the bike shop was closed. I think Butte is bigger than Helena. I see on the map it has a Walmart and lots of other shops.

    Having decided to take it a bit easier I spent a lot of time in Butte. I ate a large KFC meal, and bought extra to take along for supper. Spent an Extra half hour at Verizon to get a Sim card so I don't have to wait for wifi.

    This morning I saw one of the Trail Angel water stops. There was a cooler box with bottles of water and some chocolates. I stopped and sat on the side of the road enjoying the very cold bottle of water.    Læs mere
