• Mozzie attack

    Mar 15–16, 2025 in South Africa 🌧 15 °C

After a day off traveling through the Klein Karoo and stopping off for an interview with Karoo botanist, Jan Vlok, we found ourselves
pushing through the evening to make headway before the conference on Monday near the Drakensberg. Camping near Aberdeen on a dirt road, the mozzies were out with a vengeance. Not only that but I stood on an Acacia thorn. We had the electric racquet which we call "the gun" with us, and while brushing our teeth I set about thrashing sightlessly in the dark, intermittent snaps heralding a multitude of successes!

Over the years I've found the humble zap-racquet an indispensable tool in my fight against mosquitos. I used to wait till the mozzie alighted on my face before slapping myself. Perhaps a 10 or 20% success rate, depending on how patient I am. Now, when I hear one I swish in the general direction of the sound and seem to have a higher success rate at connecting, sometimes with more than one.

Combined with the judicious use of a towel against the ceiling or walls, disturbing "chill -out zones", by smashing them or swishing with the towel, I can have a mostly mosquito free night. However by far my best acquisition had been the mosquito tent.

What is your technique for dealing with these most ungodly of nectar sucking fuckers?!
