• The Garden Fair at The Homestead Msankha

    Jul 5–8, 2025 in Malawi ☁️ 21 °C

As our time in Malawi was quickly coming to an end, we happened, quite accidentally, on a space called The Mushroom Farm. Our trusty Skyla navigated the intense, ever-winding road leading to Livingstonia with relative ease, and what we found there was quite something. This eco lodge is community-based, and it was refreshing to see that this was not just a marketing gimmick, but in fact a reality! Community in action, working collaboratively together to help each other, wonderful! If you find yourself in these here parts, check them out on insta: @themushroomfarmmalawi or FB: the mushroom farm Malawi.

While chatting to the locals, we were invited to join The Garden Fair at The Homestead Msankhanya, a location not too far up the road. Well, what a treat! This event was a celebration of UK folklore and fairytales and featured market games, handmade costumes, delicious food, local dramas, and live performances from Malawian artists. Funds raised from this event are going to be used by the “Abel Program,” which is an outreach initiative aimed at improving the quality of life of children with special needs in the Livingstonia community of Northern Malawi. These children were excited to share that if they get enough money, they will be able to go and visit Nkhata Bay for the very first time in their lives. Again, there are remarkable people doing remarkable things in this world. If you are curious to know more, check out insta: thehomesteadmsankhanya or https://www.theabelprogram.org/.

Our day was filled with games, supporting local vendors, tasting many delicious treats, and Shereen buying herself an artwork from Sam and handmade earrings that were the replica of the road we had travelled the day before to get to Livingstonia. We bid you farewell Malawi as we continue our travels, only now with a new friend, Luciana.
