• Art on Teshima Island

    The remote and small island of Teshima (population of 800 inhabitants) used to be known as “the island of milk”. But in the 70s, it suffered from illegal dumping of industrial waste transforming its pristine environment into “an island of garbage”. In 1993, residents filed a pollution request against the government: it became one of the biggest waste scandals nationwide. After a long struggle, islanders won the case in 2000.
    Today, museums and contemporary art attract many visitors who are encouraged to ride a bike :).
