Christie arrived last night after 9pm on the Train from Madrid. The taxi line was long so she decided to walk the 20 minutes to our hostel. Bonnie and I met her halfway, sprinting after her when we saw her down the block. She is the perfect person to join our little band.
We grabbed a burger and fries to share between the three of us and then caught up on our trip over the Picos and her travel from the States. We hardly knew where to start. We had so much to share with each other.
She brought supplies from home, including a new shirt for me as my Hawaiian one is shot. It will be nice to wear something new. I loved the message on the last shirt, from the mountains to the ocean, and that is where it brought us. There were also cards from Kona and Jamie, which meant the world to us both. Jamie sent a replacement box of Peanut M&Ms and some extra rocks to leave at Cruz de Farro.
Our room is small for three pilgrims, but it is supposed to fit up to five. We have blended in nicely though, giving each other the space we need.
We woke up late, having slept above the Wet Neighborhood and all the noise of partying, even on a Sunday night. The breakfast cafe Bonnie and I wanted to return to was closed but we found another great one just a 15 minute walk away.
The Gaudi built Casa Bodines building was one of our big accomplishments today. It was an amazing building from top to bottom in architecture, design, symbolism, functionalism, and beauty. It was inspiring to see his work and learn more about his life and passion.
We did our last minute shopping at the grocery store for protein bars, the Camino shop for shells and a belt for me, and the pharmacy for a knee brace that Christie hopes she won’t need but will be prepared for just in case. We also hung out at the Correos station while Christie sorted out her baggage transfer. What we thought should be a pretty easy process sure had a lot of technical glitches today.
For lunch we took Christie back to Kamado. Even though we had told her about the flower mouth cleansing experience her reaction to it was priceless! I’m so glad I took some video!
In the afternoon light we took the tour of the Leon Cathedral, listening to an audio tour of the history, the design, the building and the restoration of this epic structure. It is my favorite cathedral and the light was epic.
We finished with a light dinner, sharing hopes for what we are building for the Breast Cancer Camino. It was emotional and hopeful. We retired early to pack our backpacks for tomorrow’s first walk together.
Here we go!

We left Leon early today knowing that the afternoon would be spent better in the shade of the albergue than it would be in the direct sun on the Meseta.
The day flew by, the three of us in conversation the whole Way, discussing aspects of the Breast Cancer Camino walk next year in collaboration with Expedition Inspiration.
Not only does this give Christie and I the opportunity to strategize and plan the program aspects of the retreat, but we are also mapping out where we would walk, where we would stop, where we would stay, etc.
We believe that the marriage of the program we are designing with the Camino pilgrimage will provide the organic and transformative experience for our participants. We are committing to create a challenging, healing journey.
Today’s physical trip was also a success. We love this Albergue, which is family owned. We loved the hospitality, the facility, and the home cooked food. I stayed here two years ago when I walked the Frances route solo. I had some memories come flooding back of a pilgrim I had met that night who has remained my Camino throughout that journey. I reached out to Bas when I arrived here and he was quick to reply, attaching photos of our past time together. I am grateful for what the Camino provides.
We have a long day tomorrow, 30 KM into Astorga, where we have a planned excursion into the Gaudi Palace. We are starting out even earlier as we have further to walk and it is supposed to be even hotter. It will be an epic day though, with some meaningful Camino history and places that I can’t wait to share with Bonnie and Christie.

The exhaustion is real, so this will be a brief update with words . There are a lot of stories in the photos.
A neighborhood dog felt he needed to vocalize all night long, so our sleep was not as long nor as thorough as needed. Bonnie’s alarm was set for 6 AM, and we were out the door by 6:30 as we had a long, hot day ahead of us to Astorga.
We created a plan that included breaks for rest and food at regular intervals. While we will tweak it slightly for next year, we are happy with the outcome. Walking a 32 KM day, even in the heat, is possible.
There were some highs – like the oasis at the end of the Meseta called El Jardin del Alma. While Christie and I rested with our shoes off, making fresh-squeezed orange juice, Bonnie was playing chess against Kevin, our Spanish host.
And there were also some lows – like the albergue at the end of the long road coming out of Mazarife, that had dry-as-dirt tortilla and stale-as-rock bread for breakfast. Christie looked at us after taking a bite and said, “You two have been eating this for 28 straight days?” This truly was the worst one we have eaten, and not even the tabasco sauce could save it.
We ended up in Astorga where we were able to visit the Gaudi Palace. The light was beautiful this afternoon, and we stayed until closing time. There was no opportunity to also visit the cathedral. Bonnie and Christie visited the chocolate museum while I edited photos and waited for our laundry to finish. Don’t feel bad for me; they brought me back great chocolate and I didn’t have to walk as far.
Our bellies are full of Italian spaghetti and lasagna. Our dogs are tired, but at least we won’t be hearing the neighbor’s canine tonight. We have a quiet room with air con, so it feels like heaven.
Today we pushed past fears. There was a lot of laughter. Tomorrow we begin our ascent into Rabanal.

We were so grateful for a good night's sleep at Hotel Gaudi. We decided to leave later, as we only had 22 km to get to Rabanal. Before leaving the hotel, we stopped in the bar for a café con leche. Once we left, we made it less than 100 feet before deciding to go into the next cafe for breakfast and more coffee.
The later exit from Astorga allowed us to visit the Iglesia de San Pedro de Rectivia, a wonderful Catholic church full of mosaic art and modern stained glass. While vastly different from the older churches and cathedrals we have visited, we were moved by this experience.
A few kilometers later, we visited another chapel, the Ermita del Ecce Homo, which, though simple, has messages of hope and healing for pilgrims. Just outside is a Pilgrim Memorial Grove, where the names of some pilgrims who have passed on the Camino are memorialized. We stopped to consider those in our lives whom we have lost to cancer before continuing on our journey.
There were well-spaced towns during today’s stage. We stopped for beverages several times due to the heat, including the infamous Cowboy Bar in El Ganso. In the afternoon, we were grateful when some cloud cover rolled in with an accompanying breeze.
We arrived at Rabanal later than we expected, but we were not worn out like yesterday. We love our guesthouse and think it will be a perfect spot for our group next year.
I’m really appreciating my processing time with Christie and Bonnie. We talk about life, about the Camino, and about next year’s breast cancer walk. I love the way it is taking shape!
We ended the evening by attending the Vespers service at the Monastery de San Salvador del Monte Irago. It is a much different church experience hearing the whole service being chanted in Latin, but it added to our experience and our discussion.
Dinner was ice cream bars. Don’t judge.

People talk a lot about the highest point on the Camino Francés, the Cruz de Ferro (Cross of Iron). You might think it is high on a precipice, takes a lot of effort to climb to, has amazing views from its vantage point, and is a grand piece of artwork. The truth is, the cross is quite small and sits upon a large pole that a Scottish man would toss in a contest. The pole is on a mound of stones right next to a highway. It is a relatively simple walk, a gentle half-hour stroll from the town of Foncebadón. And there is no viewpoint, as it is not the highest point in the area; there are lots of taller mountains around. It is just the highest place of elevation that this path runs across.
That its setting is not spectacular does not take away the importance and specialness of this monument. This location has been a sacred spot for longer than there has been a pilgrimage to Santiago and before there was a Christian symbol on top of the pole. What is almost overwhelming when you arrive is the spectacle of all the rocks that people have left for centuries. There are rocks from all over the world which represent lives, loves, promises, vows, regrets, burdens, sin, and victories - and they are all brought there intentionally, from near and far, mostly on foot.
Intentions. That is what Christie, Bonnie, and I talked about this morning on our walk from Rabanal to Foncebadón. We each had a rock or two and discussed what they represented, as well as what leaving them behind would mean to us. It was a precious time of vulnerability and sharing. Then, when we left the cafe at Foncebadón, we walked that last half hour in silence, separated enough from each other to provide personal space.
Bonnie arrived first and stepped to the side to allow the pilgrims who were already at the pole to have their moments, which usually includes placing a rock, a short time of reflection and possibly a prayer, and then usually has a quick photo opp. The last time I was here, all the pilgrims seemed to just know what the proper protocol entailed.
Today was different. Between Bonnie’s arrival and my own, some bikers started to arrive. When I walked up to the pole, two had their bikes leaning against the pile of stones. More riders arrived after me at speeds that kicked up rocks in all directions when they braked at the top. One of them was screaming in victory. It took the next fifteen minutes for the whole dozen or more of them to arrive, and the others waited for them next to the pole, ignoring other pilgrims who were peacefully trying to place their stones and have their own moments. Most of us gave up and walked over to the benches in the nearby park until the bikers would leave. They didn’t. They changed clothes next to the pole. They held up a banner and took individual and group photos. They climbed up on top of the rocks and then on each other’s shoulders so they could nail a flag up as high as they could on the pole. Then they started taking photos all over again. The pilgrim from Istanbul sitting next to me was cursing them under her breath, trying to undo any blessing they might have received from riding their bikes on the Francés.
To be fair, we didn’t know what their cause was. Perhaps it was a ride in memory of a friend who had died. They could have been raising money for cancer research or a trip to the moon. But at the time, it didn’t matter. If they would have asked me to take their photo for them, I would have said, “No,” and it would have come with an immediate explanation why. Which is also why I decided to retreat to the park and not have a pissing contest on top of the sacred stones.
Thankfully when they left another pilgrim wandered up the Way. He was a Zen Buddhist Priest and a college professor from the Boston area. He brought peace with him and I greatefully received it, recognizing him as another Camino angel.
I had a lot to process while walking down the mountain to Molinaseca (which is by far the hardest part about today’s Camino stage). While I was all prepared with my intentions at the Cruz de Ferro, I was thrown when I encountered unexpected chaos.
This is a growth opportunity.
I know that I will face resistance to my intentions. Some will be from outside forces, like the unruly bikers, and some will be my own internal resistance to the journey of moving forward and upward. So I've got to learn to press in - to be present, to be open, to be love, and to be true. Even in chaos.
Ultreia et Suseia!
P.S. Besides the bit with the bikers, today’s walk, though strenuous on the hips and knees, was absolutely glorious! I even tried setting Christie up with a Templar Knight!Leggi altro

A random thoughts post. I’m tired and just ready to let it flow.
-----When you walk down into Molinaseca, you’ve been coming down a steep, rocky path for most of the Camino stage. You don’t see the town until you are almost on top of it. Then you turn one more corner and see a bridge and a river flowing gently underneath. Two years ago, when I walked this Way, I stopped and ate lunch next to the river and then pressed forward to Ponferada where there was a Templar Castle.
Castles are cool, and the Templar Knights are full of history, mystery, and intrigue, but given a choice, I find more Camino solace and peace coming down from the cross at the river than I do at the castle. So for this trip, we stopped our stage in Molinaseca. We took advantage of our time at the river. We went for a swim in it. We walked around it. We ate dinner next to it. We slept in a room facing it, and woke up to the light reflecting off of it.
On the way out of town today, we looked at another albergue we may want to use for our group next year. As nice as the setting, price, and ratings may be, it was too far away from the river.
-----There was a weariness in all three of us today. It was noticeable in our pace, our processing, and our patter.
-----While the albergue we checked out in Molinaseca didn’t check out, the one we visited at the end of our day in Cacabelos looks perfect for our plans next year. Interestingly enough, it is situated a stone’s throw away from another river.
-----Today we discussed friendships: the people who hold us and the people we hold dear. The friends we have loved and the ones we have lost. The difference between the friends we make due to proximity and those due to true affinity.
-----Tomorrow we will walk to Trabadelo to stay with some of my friends. They live next to a river.Leggi altro

Walking out of O Cebreiro with Bonnie and Christie this morning felt like heading out on a brand new journey. This was our first full day in Galicia, and it feels different here. Maybe it is just me, but when you cross into this region, it is like being plugged in straight to the energy source where before you relied on a long extension cord. I could sense it in the air, the light, the path, and the pilgrims. The coffee was hotter, the tortilla was fresher, the dogs were friendlier, the kilometers were shorter, the songs came easier, and the laughter didn’t fade. At one point, I said to Christie, “If this doesn’t heal what ails you, I don’t know what will.”
We are making great connections for next year’s Breast Cancer walk. We talked to the owners of the Pension where we are staying tonight. They have been affected by cancer in their family and were excited about our plans. They would like to host us next year and want us to call them as soon as we have set a date. Their place in Tricastela is lovely, and their hospitality is top-notch.
I’m enjoying walking back over the path I walked two years ago here on the Camino Frances. I recognize places I stayed, cafes where I took a break, and restaurants where I ate. Today I remembered specific sections of the trail and landmarks before we arrived at them. I remember specific pilgrims, conversations, and feelings that I had at that time. Revisiting all of this is burning the Camino magic into my psyche, and it feels like a soul tattoo.
Bonnie and I have been on this Camino pilgrimage for five weeks. I’m not sure exactly how far we have traveled, but it is north of 400 miles. With each stone marker, we see the kilometers left to Santiago getting smaller and smaller. Both of us are excited to come home—to our families and friends, and our jobs and routines—but we both recognize that the routine we have had the privilege to walk out here is an investment that will pay off dividends on our return.
But let's not talk of returns just yet. We have six more glorious days of walking in Galicia. Tomorrow we will make our way to Sarria through Samos, where there is a Benedictine monastery that was founded in the sixth century.
Christie just picked up the guitar that was sitting alone in the corner of this Pension and made it her friend. I’m more interested in her version of "Angel from Montgomery" than continuing to write.
Enjoy the images we captured today. They may look like pretty postcards from Galicia, but they are actually snapshots of life on the Way, full of motion, meaning, and memory. Today was glorious and will stay with us moving forward, which is exactly what we are doing.

Today was a beautiful walk to Samos and an interesting visit to such an old monastery that houses just six monks and two novices.
