      An afternoon at the Carrefour

      February 25, 2019 in China ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Mission accomplished! French butter in da house! After searching high and low, our search for Poppy-friendly supermarkets netted us a Carrefour家乐福! A mere six subway stops away - and unlike the Tesco, it even bears a giant Carrefour logo on the outside to help people find it!

The Carrefour on Chengshan Rd (by Yanggao S Rd) offers a fine selection of fruits and vegetables, a diverse array of westernized products (e.g., LKK sauces), a one-stop shop for both food and non-food supermarket goods, as well as somewhat friendly service! We got lots of compliments for the kids’ good métis looks, Mommy's not too shabby Chinese, even our veggie-heavy grocery cart was praised. Oh, and - real French butter! The only thing missing was a cashew bulk bin.

During the weeks of our stay we found lots more great stuff at the local Carrefour, including European Charcoal (apparently some kind of yogurt “burnt with European Charcoal”), a one-of-a-kind frog tank, Sank Fun’s Super Boom Chicken Drumstick, and Donkey-hide Gelatin Brown Sugar! The Yoda-esque “Free Using Steps of the Coin Trolley” guide: Somehow the 6 and 9-year-old managed to figure it out without too much reading capability - Ikea-style pictogram may have been more helpful perhaps?
