Fun pieces at China Art Museum

      April 7, 2019 in China ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Really glad that we were going to the Yaohua Road area today and happened to look up the China Art Museum as a potential point of interest! It is another totally free Shanghai museum filled with some really fun pieces - not to mention good play and colouring areas to keep kids entertained. In many ways it was more fun for Davy and Meg than the Shanghai Museum, which houses more traditional Chinese artwork and historical pieces. They could find more things that they could relate to and comment on - especially the comics!

First off, the building itself already looks really cool from the outside - definitively Chinese and just as definitively modern. The entrance hall is all metal and glass - very polished and these building materials age better than many others that we have seen around Shanghai. There are certainly a few galleries showcasing traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy. However, the ones that really took the cake for us were the ones full of very non-traditional pieces - like these mirrors cut and pasted to outline two friends playing diabolo, or this meeting of important-looking Chinese people plus token white guy, or this gorgeous 9-foot Steinway grand piano inlaid according to a famous Chinese painting - apparently took four years to build. Davy particularly liked the comics (can’t recall the main character’s name, but sure brought back memories as we have some of these at home) and the multimedia section showcasing Chinese cartoons across the years.

Loyal son shares socks for a good cause

      April 7, 2019 in China ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Today's target: River Mall - a visually distinctive shopping complex likely constructed around the time of Expo 2010 in Shanghai. It is right across the street from the China Art Museum and directly connected to Yaohua metro stop. The mall has a little river and pool inside surrounded by jungle decor, complete with a few cute (stuffed) monkeys swinging amongst the (plastic) coconut trees. There are also several strongly monkey-themed shops, which Meg insisted on stopping by for a few quick shots.

We were at River Mall to hit the local Decathlon - Poppy needed some proper running shoes and kit to support his new fitness push, and Davy wanted to pick up some swimming goggles - again (two pairs busted already this trip). In order for us to achieve the first mission, loyal son Davy had to sacrifice his socks so that sandal-wearing Poppy could have something to try on potential shoes with - fortunately they fit well enough!

Our Decathlon adventure ultimately came to a successful conclusion, and we also picked up some stylish PM2.5/N95 face masks that we’ll be sporting in Beijing. These are supposed to block 95% of the PM2.5 particulate matter (pollutants) in the air that we are constantly breathing. For first time, Davy and Meg started to speak a bit of homesickness, as we explained to them the necessity of wearing the masks in Beijing. Swiss air quality is definitely something one misses in China.

      Not so traditional chinese paintings

      April 7, 2019 in China ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The paintings in the China Art Museum really caught our eyes and imaginations due to their representation of very different themes than we were previously accustomed to seeing in paint - whether in the Chinese or European traditions: Meetings of ordinary business people - neither religious nor political leaders nor royalty, modern versions of the old school waterfalls and rock formations, tunnel excavations and factory openings (especially automotive and aerospace, industrial progress seemed to be a proud theme), war scenes complete with detailed renditions of machine guns, crowded subway platforms at the Spring Festival, panoramas of the very cool museum itself and River Mall next door, plus some modern art tableaux that you just wouldn’t normally associate with Chinese art. Looking forward to visiting the so-called creativity spaces in Shanghai and maybe also Beijing if we get the chance!Read more
