    Alexander Graham Bell Nat'l HistoricSite

    6 settembre 2018, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

The museum features memorabilia associated with Bell's experiments, including: the original HD-4 hull of a hydrofoil boat that set the world speed record here in Baddeck of over 70 MPH in 1919; a full-scale replica of that boat; the AEA Silver Dart which in 1909 J.A.D. MacCurdy piloted up into the air over the ice of Baddeck Bay to become the first heavier-than-air craft to be flown in Canada and possibly the British Empire -- plus many other exhibits and documents from Bell's years of research.Leggi altro

    Parks Canada Red Chairs

    6 settembre 2018, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

"What is the red chairs program?

The Red Chair Experience is all about connecting Canadians with nature in our country's most unique and treasured places. Whether it's a quiet place to enjoy an awe-inspiring view or an "I made it!" marker at the end of a rugged hike, a Red Chair offers you a place to relax and truly discover the best that Parks Canada has to offer."

We have seen a LOT of red chairs through our travels through National Parks and National Historic Sites. This pair of chairs was on the grounds of the Alexander Graham Bell NHS facing the water.

(Also added a photo of pretty flowers from there because the photo was otherwise lonely in this post)

I think I may have lost count. I've seen so many. Didn't get a picture of them all since its hard to snap recent photos in a moving car and there isn't always a good place to stop.

Are you sick of them yet? I'm not!Leggi altro

    Pictou Railway Nat'l Historic Site

    6 settembre 2018, Canada ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

"A station was first built here in 1867 as a terminus for the Intercolonial Railway. This was a government line, incorporating earlier track, which forged a link between the Maritime provinces and central Canada. It became part of the Canadian National Railways in 1923."

When I saw this online, I thought I'd woukd be neat to stop at since Matthew enjoys train things. The photos on the Parks Canada website must not be very recent. This place has really become very run down and isn't being very well cared for considering it's been named a National Historic Site. Sad.

    Pictou Lodge Beach Resort Restaurant

    6 settembre 2018, Canada ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Best meal so far this trip... of course it cost quite a bit more too... but it was worth every bite.
First of all we were seated in a nice sun room overlooking the water (see photo 2 for the view from my seat).

They brought us warm biscuits with some sort of molasses butter as well as a couple of tasting spoons that had a cucumber slice with tzatziki and a piece of yellow tomato. Tasty little starters.

Next, I had a cup of seafood chowder that was better than any other bowl of chowder I have ever had. Matt had a Caesar salad that had a generous amount of big bacon chunks (notice I said chunks, not bits) that he seemed to enjoy.

For the entree, I had the Cedar Plank Salmon and Matt had a Scallop dish that was linguine with some sort of pesto sauce and big scallops on top. Both were delicious. (Matt actually offered me a bite of his!)

We were too full to even consider dessert, but we did get a couple of tasty mint chocolates shaped like seashells and seahorses with our bill.

    Airbnb #4 - Seaside Cottage

    7 settembre 2018, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We had a nice stay here, albeit short. We got here about 8pm last night, and we left at 6:30am to go catch the 8am ferry to PEI. The ferry crossings are pretty far apart and so we didn't want to have to wait for the 11:15 ferry that would have us not getting to PEI until 12:30 or so. Half a day gone.

Anyway again our host was friendly and the place was nice. We have water views in the front yard and the back yard. She provided us some muffins to take with us for breakfast on the go which was nice.

Cape Bear Lighthouse and Marconi Station

    7 settembre 2018, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

A lighthouse, plus the remains of an old telegraph station.

The Marconi Wireless Telegraph Station was built adjacent to the Cape Bear Lighthouse in 1905.

On the night of April 14, 1912, this station received the first distress signal in Canada from the Titanic as it was sinking off the coast of Newfoundland. A similar station at Cape Race in Newfoundland was in communication with the Titanic, but at that time Newfoundland was not a part of Canada.Leggi altro

    PEI's traffic lights

    7 settembre 2018, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Something interesting I noticed here... is that their traffic lights are shaped differently.

Green is round, like we're used to. Yellow is a triangle and Red is square. I googled it and if seems to be that way to help people who are color blind.
Not a bad idea I suppose.

2 stops: The Chip Shack & Cows

    7 settembre 2018, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

For dinner we stopped on a floating dock at the Wharf to eat at the famous Chip Shack. I had the lobster poutine and Matt had the pulled pork poutine. Wow. What a huge mound of poutine on those plates!
We somehow managed to save some room for ice cream at Cows, which was practically next door. I had an ice cream called "Wowie Cowie" which was described as : Vanilla ice cream, English toffee marble, chocolate flakes, and Moo Crunch. Or was really good. I'd have it again in a heartbeat. Matt had an ice cream called Apple Crisp... which is pretty self explanatory. We ate our ice creams while browsing the souvenir shops on the Wharf.
