• Leaving BA

    February 7, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We've had a lovely time, even with the side trips to the dentist, but it's time to leave the capital city. We are getting on a plane for 3.5 hours to fly to El Calafate and start the first Patagonia bit of the trip. Leaving behind the sunshine and heat for cool and probably rainy lakes and mountains.Read more

  • A bit of culture

    February 6, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Took a tour of the opera house - Teatro Colon - very grand & sparkly. And made from marble shipped from Europe. Among the best acoustics in the world apparently, so said Pavaroti. Then to the Museo de Belle Artes for some fine art. They're a very artistic and cultured bunch the Porteños (Buenos Aires-ians)Read more

  • Steak and wine!

    February 5, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Our first parilla - Argentina grilled steak & obligatory malbec. And a walk home through Palermo which feels very like Brooklyn - and even has a bar to acknowledge the similarity! Just for Benj & Laura xxRead more

  • Street art of San Telmo

    February 5, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Explored the cobbled streets and antique markets of the old town today, ate some chorizo & pumpkin and Clare got snap happy with the street art.

  • The dentist (again)

    February 4, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Having been to the dentist 4 times in the past 3 weeks in London... Lisa's teeth sprung a brand new problem the day before we left. It has been getting worse and progressed to pain on swallowing & reduced hearing. Luckily we had a recommendation for a dentist & an hour later (whole consultation in Spanish) we had a diagnosis of an infected wisdom tooth. We dismissed the two surgical options (the dentist agreed operating now was a big risk) and instead left with antibiotics & mouth washes. Clare now has to 'irrigate' the area with a chlorhexedine syringe every day. Yey! That'll be fun camping. Clare had to go to the pharmacy all by herself & buy the prescription in (pigeon) spanish! Not quite the adventure we had in mind.Read more

  • Recoleta

    February 4, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Guided tour of Recoleta with Martín. Saw huge trees, lots of plazas, heard a lot of history and politics. Tour ended at Recoleta cemetery where Eva Peron is buried. Seriously wealthy people built themselves amazing final resting places. Temperature is climbing here but rain forecast for our Patagonia hike 🙁Read more

  • Evening stroll

    February 3, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Went for a walk with half of the city in los bosques de palermo this evening. I can tell you that rollerblading is in big time here. Walked around past the zoo and saw flamingos, a giraffe and capybara. Then had 38 seconds to cross twelve lanes of traffic - but at least you get a countdown. Dry January finished on Sunday night but we've just started on our first bottle of Malbec (£2) and we are both a bit drunk on one glass each.Read more

  • Gluten free gourmet

    February 3, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

One thing we did not expect was that Argentina would be such a gf friendly country. We are lunching in a lovely restaurant called Sintaxis where we can eat everything. So we are having pizza and empanadas and will take away medialunas and other yummy stuff for home.Read more

  • Up and at 'em

    February 3, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Went for a run around the botanical gardens this morning. Bit hot and humid but very nice and contains my favourite building in BA so far.

  • Orientation Day

    February 2, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

First real chance to explore the city. Went on the subway - which costs 23p per trip! Visited the cathedral but refused Clare's offer to take my photo with a lifesize Jesus on a donkey - people were queueing for the pleasure. Walked around the trendy skyscraper docks area. Had a very lovely lunch in Boca with (Lisa's) dad and Lynne then walked around the Costanera Sur ecological reserve. Saw a wild guinea pig, some lovely birds and a red haired tree. One whole area was roped off because of snakes but people were still picnicking there.Read more

  • Berkhamstead - Ivinghoe circular walk

    January 24, 2016 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Last training walk and it was the biggest and muddiest so far. Hard work. We slipped, slid and squelched our way along. Distance - 24.5 Km, 401 m elevation in 5 hours 32 mins. Photos show some of the mud, the Bridgewater Monument, how mild the weather was on the Ridgeway, our brief lunch stop with views towards Bulbourne and finally who knew Berkhamstead not only has a castle but a totem pole.Read more

  • Chilworth

    January 22, 2016 in England ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

  • Snowy Bucks

    January 17, 2016 in England ⋅ 🌧 2 °C

Couldn't do a big walk yesterday as I am nursing a nasty cold but we had a chance to make a snowman in the garden at Clare's mum and dad's today. Only had a light sprinkle in London.

  • Thames Path

    January 10, 2016 in England ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Weekend in London so did a 20 km city walk today. Home - Hammersmith - along the river path past rowers, runners, lots of bridges, all the way to Tate Britain for some culture. Then to Waterloo for lovely food at Wahaca and home on tube and replacement bus. Total - 20.12 km, 3 hours 35 mins, 170 m elevation - though I am not sure how as it all seemed very flat.Read more

  • Amberley, West Sussex

    January 1, 2016 in England ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

New Year's Day training walk in yucky conditions. Started off in the wrong place and had to wade through flooded fields. Clare slipped and fell in the mud. Lots of up, not so much down. Great test of our GoreTex boots and gear, all of which held up well. Moral of the story though - put on your waterproof trousers on as soon as it starts to rain and stuff will get wet in your pockets. Distance - 18.23 km, duration 4 hours 23 mins, 353 m elevation and 2 hours of it in the rain.Read more

  • Cuckmere Haven

  • Box Hill

    November 28, 2015 in England ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

  • Aldbourne

    November 15, 2015 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Went all the way to Wiltshire to do more of the Ridgeway. Not a lot of elevation but really good training for the Patagonian winds. Distance - 19.27 Km, 176 m elevation, 4 hours 13 mins. Very good choice not to walk through a field that warned of possible bulls. We did a detour and when we arrived at the joining point we could see about ten bulls all standing right by the gate we would have had to have gone through.Read more

  • Coombe Hill and Wendover

    November 8, 2015 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

  • Kingston - Lewes circular walk

    November 1, 2015 in England ⋅ 🌫 12 °C

Spooky foggy walk with lots of elevation, slippery chalk and rubbish visibility which made navigating difficult - we did get lost a couple of times. It was also very mild and humid. Distance - 19.4 Km, 503 m elevation, 4 hours 38 mins. Eerie spider webs.Read more

    October 10, 2015 in England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C
