• Day 17 - John O’Groats to Ullapool

    July 3, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

We slept in this morning and had breakfast before setting off. We resisted the full cooked English breakfast and settled for the continental option. Our first stop on our drive was at Dunnet Head. It is the northernmost point of mainland Great Britain and has beautiful natural beauty, rugged cliffs and stunning ocean views.

The weather was wet all day, worse than yesterday. Add in single lane roads with passing areas, then we needed to be extremely careful of oncoming traffic and negotiate a way past. There were a lot of campervans on the road today, with the majority having a European registration. Nevertheless, it was a busy road, and passing was challenging.

The northwest of Scotland is renowned for its dramatic and stunning scenery. From rugged coastlines to rolling hills, there is no shortage of natural beauty. The lochs, mountains and coastline are just magnificent. With the inclement weather, the clouds obscured some of the mountaintops. If it was this cold and wet in summer, I would not want to be here in winter.
