• Day 18 - Ullapool to Fort Augustus

    July 4, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We had sufficient respite from the rain today to drive all afternoon with roof down. It remained overcast but quite mild for our drive.

From Ullapool, we continued on the North Coast 500 route, staying close to the western coast of Scotland. One of the most iconic features of the western coast of Scotland is its many islands, including the popular destinations like the Isles of Skye, Mull, and Islay. Though we won't be visiting any of these islands, we could get a beautiful view of them from the mainland coast.

We found a nice cafe in Applecross for lunch, where we enjoyed the soup of the day with some antipasto and salad. From Applecross, we drove up and over the Applecross Pass. It is known for its scenic beauty and challenging driving conditions. The pass is situated in the Applecross peninsula and connects the villages of Applecross and Shieldaig.

The road through Applecross Pass is narrow and winding, with steep gradients and hairpin bends. It offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Isle of Skye in the distance. Its breathtaking scenery and challenging road make it a memorable experience for our trip.
